- Tuesday, March 5, 4:01 PM Microsoft (MSFT) will receive "a fine running into hundreds of millions of dollars" from the EU tomorrow over its alleged violation of a promise to give Windows users a choice of browsers, the FT reports. Reuters reported of a pending fine last week. (Danish tax probe) 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 1:53 PM PC industry forecasts continue to head lower: IDC sees industry shipments falling 1.3% this year to 345.8M. That's below a prior forecast for a 2.8% increase, and a 2013, and comes in the wake of a 3.7% drop in 2012. Shipments to "mature markets" are seen falling 4%, while emerging market are expected to eke out 0.6% growth - that mix shift benefits Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) and Asus, and hurts H-P (HPQ) and Dell (DELL). For the record, IDC expects tablet shipments to hit 172.4M in 2013. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 9:33 AM Microsoft (MSFT) acquires MetricsHub, a developer of tools that automate cloud management with the goal of optimizing performance. Naturally, MetricsHub will be integrated with Microsoft's Azure cloud infrastructure/app development platform. News of the purchase comes shortly after Microsoft updated Azure's enterprise security/management tools - the company has long tried to differentiate Azure through its support for hybrid clouds and integration with Microsoft's enterprise software ecosystem. (Red Hat/ManageIQ) (VMware/DynamicOps) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, March 4, 12:05 PM The Danish Treasury is going after Microsoft (MSFT) for $1B in unpaid taxes relating to the company's 2002 purchase of Navision. Microsoft subsequently sold some Navision assets to its Irish subsidiary at - alleges Denmark - too low a price, allowing assets to be transferred out of the country without proper dues and taxes. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 4, 9:49 AM Will Microsoft buy Barnes & Noble (BKS +5.8%)? The bookstore chain shoots higher in early trading after a Barron's article pitches the case that the retail business is worth $19 a share alone. The crux of the argument is that Microsoft (MSFT -0.2%) would be smart to buy the company to jumpstart its retail business and set up a store-within-a-store concept to boost sales of its tablets. 8 Comments [Consumer, Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 6:37 PM Windows 8 (MSFT) only made up 2.67% of PC Web traffic in February, per Net Applications. That's up modestly from 2.36% in January, and is the latest datapoint suggesting a slow adoption rate for Microsoft's latest OS. Windows 7 and XP accounted for 83.5% of Web traffic between them. (previous) 17 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, February 28, 4:36 PM Facebook (FB) finally makes its long-rumored purchase of Microsoft's (MSFT) Atlas ad-serving/tracking business official. Terms haven't been disclosed, but past reports have suggested the price is below $100M. The purchase strengthens Facebook's efforts to create a platform for serving targeted display ads that can rival Google's (GOOG) DoubleClick. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, February 28, 2:38 PM The EU is set to fine Microsoft (MSFT +0.5%) by the end of March for failing to make good on an '09 promise to offer Windows users a choice of browsers, Reuters reports. Given the EU has fined $2.1B to date, any penalty could be substantial. Perhaps Microsoft can defend itself by pointing out European consumers are having little trouble finding their way to 3rd-party browsers on their own. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 27, 11:20 AM The business versions of Office 365 (MSFT) are officially out. Prices range from $20/user/month for Enterprise & Government version to $12.50/user/month for the Small Business Premium version. An InfoWorld review praises 365's feature set, admin tools, and ease of use, while granting "there's still plenty of room for improvement." With its latest Office refresh, Microsoft has gone out of its way to encourage a mass migration to subscription services, as it tries to keep Google Apps at bay. (previous: I, II) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, February 25, 9:44 AM H-P (HPQ) is officially done with webOS and embracing Android. LG has bought webOS and related IP from H-P, with plans use it in smart TVs. H-P tried to reinvent webOS as an app development platform, but that didn't go far, and much of the team left for Google. Meanwhile, H-P has announced the Slate 7, a $170 7" Android tablet that supports H-P's ePrint tech, but sports ho-hum specs otherwise. H-P, which has delayed making Windows RT tablets, says it wants to "have a broad set of [tablets] on the market" - Microsoft might not be thrilled to hear that. (high-end tablet rumor) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Sunday, February 24, 2:40 AM Microsoft (MSFT) has joined the growing list of tech giants to confess to being victim to a cyberattack, saying a recent intrusion was similar to that suffered by Facebook and by Apple. While a small number of Microsoft's computers were infected with malware, the company has "no evidence of customer data being affected." Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, February 22, 6:44 PM Press shots have leaked of two fresh Nokia (NOK) Windows Phone 8 models - the Lumia 720 and 520. The devices, which will likely be shown off at the Mobile World Congress, look quite a bit like the Lumia 920 and 820. The Verge reports the 720 will have a 4.3" display, 1 GHz. dual-core CPU, and 8GB of storage, while the 520 will have a 4" display, 4GB of storage, and the same CPU. Will the 520 allow Nokia to finally sell a sub-$200 (unsubsidized) WP8 model? (Reuters report) 9 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, February 22, 4:43 PM The next Xbox will be revealed in April, "developers and other industry professionals" tell gaming site CVG. Hopefully the hardware will literally be revealed - Sony failed to do this at its PS4 event, or provide pricing info. Past rumors mention an 8-core CPU and 800 MHz. GPU from AMD, a Blu-ray player, a next-gen Kinect with lower latency and an improved color stream, and (most intriguingly) a cheap Xbox set-top focused on casual gaming and media use. Microsoft (MSFT) had been expected to show off the next Xbox at June's E3 convention. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, February 21, 7:32 AM Google (GOOG) gets its $1,000 price target, with CLSA raising to that level citing improving cost-per-clicks (CPCs). Are they serious? In the meantime, Google is set to take on Microsoft (MSFT) with the sale of touchscreen laptops powered by its Chrome operating system. Shares +0.4% premarket. 19 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 20, 2:10 PM More on Microsoft: VGleaks has posted what it claims are the specs for the next-gen Kinect. The device will reportedly have a wider field-of-view than the current Kinect sensor, feature a 1920x1080 color stream, and lower latency by 1/3. One recent rumor claimed the next Xbox will require the next Kinect to function. JDS Uniphase (JDSU) is a component supplier for the current Kinect, and might also support the next-gen model. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 20, 1:57 PM "Our number one thing is supplying products to consumers," says Steve Ballmer (MSFT) in his latest interview. To justify his stance, Ballmer notes 65% of PC sales and 75% of Office usage involves consumers. BI's Jay Yarow doesn't like what he's hearing, given the pace at which consumer PC sales are being cannibalized. One could also point out Windows/Office ASPs are higher for enterprises, and that Microsoft's Server & Tools unit is enterprise-focused. Asked whether he's pleased with Surface sales, Ballmer would only say he's "super-glad [Microsoft] did Surface." 9 Comments [Tech]
