- Tuesday, April 2, 6:49 PM Surface RT (MSFT) sales "have slowed considerably in the last month from an already anemic pace" and could be below 50K/month, according to Detwiler Fenton's checks. Surface Pro sales are a little better - Detwiler estimates a Q1 tally of 300K-500K - in part due to limited competition from PC OEMs. The firm is counting on the launch of Windows Blue (expected to support 7" tablets) and Office's touch-friendly Gemini updates to give Windows 8 Pro tablet sales a lift. (Bloomberg) 11 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 1, 3:57 PM After posting Y/Y share gains in the U.S. for much of calendar Q4, the iPhone's (AAPL -3.2%) U.S. share fell 350 bps Y/Y to 43.5% in the 3 months ending February, per Kantar Comtech. Android (GOOG +1%) claimed 51.2% of the market, up 580 bps Y/Y. In "Urban China," the December iPhone 5 launch helped the iPhone's share rise to 25.8%; Android's share is at 68.7%. Windows Phone (MSFT -0.1%) is making slow-but-steady progress (previous): its share is now at 4.1% in the U.S., 6.7% in the U.K., 6.8% in Germany, and 13.1% in Italy. 23 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 2:29 PM Wither Windows RT? A vague Digitimes report claims Microsoft (MSFT) "will no longer launch products under its Windows RT line and will instead merge the product line" with the upcoming Windows Blue. A Microsoft exec recently defended RT, whose sales have underwhelmed. Separately, ZDNet reports a slew of Office updates will arrive over the next 2 years, starting this fall. The updates, codenamed Gemini, will feature touch-friendly improvements and (much like Blue) reflect a shift to "delivering regular, more frequent releases of both services and apps." 5 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 10:33 AM Nokia (NOK -0.7%) insists it's "in full compliance" with Indian tax laws, and will fight a $383M tax bill levied by local authorities. Vodafone can sympathize. The tax bill arrives as the NYT's Nick Wingfield reports India is one of 7 markets (per IDC) where Windows Phone (MSFT) shipments outpaced iPhone (AAPL) shipments in Q4. The others: Russia, Argentina, Poland, South Africa, Ukraine, and a group of small Southern/Eastern European countries. Indian iPhone sales have begun to grow, but off a very small base. 13 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 27, 11:48 AM Microsoft (MSFT +0.8%) is in talks to sell its Mediaroom IPTV software platform to Ericsson (ERIC -0.4%) and could announce a deal in a few weeks, Bloomberg reports. Microsoft bet big on IPTV during the last decade and managed to score high-profile clients such as AT&T (U-Verse), Deutsche Telekom, and Telus, but the technology didn't quite take the pay-TV industry by storm, as Microsoft envisioned. Mediroom would complement Ericsson's switch/router and optical networking offerings for wireline carriers. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 27, 5:30 AM Ericsson (ERIC) has cut 1,399 positions in Sweden as part of its restructuring, fewer than the 1,550 jobs that the network-equipment vendor originally planned to axe. Ericsson will take a charge of 1.5B kroner ($230M) on its Q1 results because of the losses. Meanwhile, the company is reportedly in talks to acquire Microsoft's (MSFT) MediaRoom IPTV business, which allows telecom companies to provide television via the Internet. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 7:35 AM Spanish open source group Hispalinux files a protest with the European Commission against Microsoft (MSFT) in which it alleges the company makes it difficult for customers to switch to Linux. The EC levied a heavy fine against Microsoft earlier this month for failing to offer users different web browser options. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Sunday, March 24, 2:25 PM Screenshots of the next version of Windows 8 (MSFT), codenamed Blue, have leaked. Features include smaller live tiles, more Snap View options, and various UI tweaks meant to make the OS more touch-friendly. Separately, CNET reports Blue will feature power-saving tech meant to work with Intel's (INTC) Haswell CPUs. Intel has promised Haswell will deliver major power savings relative to Ivy Bridge, and has mandated all Haswell ultrabooks sport touchscreens. Blue is expected later this year, and reportedly is the start of a shift to an annual Windows update cycle. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Sunday, March 24, 8:30 AM "Here's a novel way to drive up a company’s share price," writes the NYT's Jeff Sommer. "Pay billions of dollars in additional taxes." Forensic accountant Robert Olstein reckons that companies such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Cisco (CSCO) should repatriate the tens of billions dollars they hold abroad, pay tax on it, and then use the rest of the cash to repurchase stock. That would boost their share prices by at least 20%. 80 Comments [Tech, Consumer, U.S. Economy, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 22, 6:44 PM An ITC administrative law judge clears Microsoft (MSFT) of infringing a Motorola Mobility (GOOG) Wi-Fi patent; the commission will make a final ruling on the matter in July. The patent in question is the only one Motorola is still asserting in its ITC suit against Microsoft - complaints related to 4 other patents have been dropped. Microsoft and Motorola have reportedly been haggling over settlement terms for their long-running legal battle. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, March 22, 5:48 PM Windows RT (MSFT) has "a very bright future," insists Microsoft exec Michael Angiulo, addressing concerns about the ARM-powered (ARMH) OS' viability in the wake of weak sales and industry criticism. Angiulo suggests the performance of future ARM chips will give RT a boost, and actually argues RT's inability to support legacy Windows apps is good for the user experience. The Verge's Aaron Souppouris isn't sold, not after seeing a Windows 8 Pro system running an Intel (INTC) Clover Trail Atom CPU easily outperform RT systems. (Intel Bay Trail) 39 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 22, 2:28 PM The Chinese government is giving its official blessing to Ubuntu: U.K.-based Canonical, a developer of the popular Linux variant, says it's working with China's IT ministry to develop Ubuntu Kylin, a China-specific version of the OS that will launch in April. Microsoft (MSFT), which has been working hard to grow its Chinese sales while trying to address local piracy, can't be pleased. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 20, 2:52 PM Screenshot leaks for the next-gen Xbox's (MSFT) development kit indicate games will have to be installed onto the console's hard drive, and that the console will constantly be connected to the Web. This backs up a prior report indicating the next Xbox will prevent used games from being played. The Verge points out the screenshots are from 2012, and that Microsoft may have decided to support used games in the interim - with the PlayStation 4 supporting them, that's arguably the safe move. GameStop (GME +0.9%) shares don't seem affected by the report. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 19, 1:25 PM More on Microsoft: The WSJ reports the DOJ and SEC are examining allegations from a former Chinese Microsoft rep that he/she was told by a local Microsoft exec to "offer kickbacks to Chinese officials in return for signing off on software contracts." Also being reviewed are allegations resellers offered bribes to score software deals with Romania's communications ministry, and that Italian consultants lavished gifts and trips on procurement officials to win government deals. The probe is said to be in the preliminary stage. 19 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 19, 1:14 PM Federal regulators are investigating Microsoft (MSFT -0.1%) and its business partners over bribery allegations. Microsoft says it's cooperating with the investigation. 3 Comments [Tech, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, March 19, 11:33 AM Microsoft (MSFT +0.1%) roundup: 1) Microsoft has acquired NetBreeze, a developer of language/data/text analysis tech. NetBreeze's tools will provide social media analytics for Microsoft's Dynamics CRM suite. Salesforce and Oracle also have ambitions in this space. 2) Weak PC forecasts or not, Acer CEO J.T. Wang claims momentum for touch-enabled Windows 8 hardware is picking up. 3) Can you say 'Surface' in Mandarin? Microsoft has opened a store on Alibaba's popular Tmall shopping site. The company's Chinese profits have long been hurt by widespread piracy. 4 Comments [Tech]
