- Thursday, December 1, 2011, 3:33 PM Research In Motion (RIMM +4.1%) is rallying on another round of buyout buzz. Caitlin Duffy notes options speculators are placing big bets on December calls - some of which expire tomorrow. Nomura's Rick Sherlund, however, is throwing cold water on the sometimes-discussed notion that Microsoft (MSFT) might be interested in RIM, and Eric Savitz is even more skeptical of such a tie-up occurring. (previously) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 10:50 AM Yahoo (YHOO +1.5%) is underperforming after Bloomberg's report of a $16.60/share bid from Silver Lake and Microsoft (MSFT +2.6%) for a mere 10%-15% stake (and in convertible preferred securities, at that) fails to impress. Kara Swisher claims P-E firm TPG capital has offered $17.50/share for a minority stake, and other players are hanging around, but that bids north of $20/share are unlikely to arrive. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 5:38 AM The consortium led by Silver Lake and Microsoft (MSFT) bid ~$16.60/share for a minority stake in Yahoo (YHOO), sources say, somewhat lower than an offer made by TPG Capital. Still debating whether to get off the sidelines: Alibaba Group, KKR (KKR), THL and Blackstone (BX). (previously) 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 1:43 PM More than 3 years after shooting down Microsoft's (MSFT) $33/share bid, Jerry Yang still appears bent on maintaining control of Yahoo (YHOO). In a story resembling an earlier report, a source claims Yang wants a deal in which Yahoo would issue new stock to PE firms friendly to him, and use the proceeds to buy back shares from the public. Yahoo is up 2.9% today on the latest round of investment/buyout buzz (I, II, III). 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 6:06 AM A consortium led by P-E firm Silver Lake and Microsoft (MSFT) is reportedly submitting a plan to take up to a 20% stake in Yahoo (YHOO), and TPG Capital is also eyeing a minority stake. Yahoo's board is expected to meet this week, or possibly even today, to discuss options. (also: a partial LBO) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 11:58 AM Yahoo (YHOO -0.1%) outperforms after it's learned Microsoft (MSFT) has joined the ranks of firms to have signed Yahoo's strict NDA, which it's requiring of would-be buyers interested in taking a closer look at the company. The big question: is Microsoft serious about making a bid (perhaps with a partner), or does it just want a peek at a competitor/partner's books? (yesterday) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 10:26 AM Microsoft (MSFT) has acquired VideoSurf, a developer of technology for analyzing the content of video frames, for $70M. Microsoft says it plans to use VideoSurf's technology to "augment the Xbox 360 ecosystem," and to make it easier to search and discover entertainment content available on Xbox Live. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, November 18, 2011, 4:08 AM P-E firm Silver Lake has held talks with Microsoft (MSFT), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and other potential partners about buying Yahoo (YHOO), the WSJ reports. Silver Lake is one of a few Yahoo suitors to sign an NDA, a requirement that has slowed the sale process. Comment! [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Monday, October 24, 2011, 11:58 AM There are good reasons why Apple (AAPL +2.9%) may not make a play for Nuance (NUAN +2.6%): Apple doesn't make $8B acquisitions, and Nuance is in areas such as medical transcriptions that Apple doesn't want. But Mike Dawson thinks they'd be crazy not to try, since it could be worth it just to keep the speech recognition technology away from Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT). 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 8:22 PM Yahoo (YHOO) buyout developments: Sources say a joint plan is coming from Silver Lake, a Canadian pension plan, and Microsoft (MSFT) (which would be in for the bulk of the deal, several billion dollars). After MSFT's failed 2008 bid, it won't go solo, but it reportedly wants key influence over Yahoo's future. (earlier: I, II) 3 Comments [Tech, M&A, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 4:39 PM More details on the firms sniffing around Yahoo (YHOO): Almost every big U.S. private-equity firm is "knee-deep" in working a buyout: Silver Lake, Blackstone (BX), TPG, KKR, Bain, Carlyle, H&F, Providence Equity and Warburg Pincus. With a $16-$18/share price being thrown around, it'll likely take two to four firms to support a bid that would reach past $20B; Eyes are on key stakeholders Alibaba (ALBCF.PK) and Microsoft (MSFT). Comment! [Tech, Breaking News, M&A]
- Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 10:32 AM The $4.5B sale of Nortel's patents to six tech companies (AAPL, MSFT, RIMM, EMC, ERIC, and SNE) is still being reviewed by the DOJ, according to Microsoft's IP chief. Regulatory challenges to the deal could potentially have an impact on the bidding for InterDigital (IDCC) and/or Eastman Kodak's (EK) patents. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, October 14, 2011, 7:53 AM Microsoft (MSFT) has closed its $8.5B acquisition of Internet voice and video giant Skype. CTO Cameron Evans goes over some of Microsoft's plans for the costly acquisition, such as integration with its Xbox, Windows Phone, and Lync platforms. Skype announced a major deal with Facebook in July. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 8:08 AM Jefferies isn't optimistic Research In Motion (RIMM) will be acquired in the near-term, believing potential buyers will wait until RIM's QNX phones are released, and the future of Windows Phone (MSFT) becomes clearer. Jefferies also thinks it would be difficult to extract value from a breakup or management change. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, M&A]
- Friday, October 7, 2011, 2:34 PM Research In Motion (RIMM) is acquiring NewBay, a provider of "white label" content tools for wireless carriers, for a reported price of $100M. The deal could give a needed boost to RIM's services offerings relative to AAPL, GOOG, and MSFT, and strengthen its ties with carriers, some of whom are remaining loyal to RIM out of a desire for a "third ecosystem." (earlier) 4 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, October 6, 2011, 11:12 AM Microsoft (MSFT +1.1%) was quick to deny any interest in Yahoo (YHOO -4.4%), but David Callaway thinks it would be foolish to not at least consider how Yahoo or parts of it might help. For all Yahoo’s problems, it is still a strong group of internet assets with a reach of ~700M unique users. If Microsoft liked Yahoo at $50B in 2008, it should love it at $20B. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
