- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 4:30 PM Yahoo (YHOO +10.1%), which took off on a report Microsoft (MSFT) is weighing a bid, drops 3.6% AH as Kara Swisher, who broke the first reports of buyout interest, says her sources tell her "Microsoft execs have taken pains to make it clear" they won't be bidding for Yahoo. She adds that much of the current M&A speculation is "being pumped up by bankers." 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 3:28 PM Fortune's man on deals, Dan Primack cracks, "wouldn't it be bigger news if Microsoft (MSFT) wasn't at least 'considering' bidding for Yahoo (YHOO)." He also says Mister Softee's big purchases tend to "(come) out of nowhere," while the rumored ones never pan out. YHOO +8.9%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 2:22 PM Google's (GOOG) $700M purchase of ITA Software is cleared by a federal judge after the search giant promises to make ITA's travel data available to rival search engines, among other concessions. MSFT, EXPE, and popular travel search engine Kayak had opposed the deal, which was approved by the DOJ in April. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, October 3, 2011, 8:42 AM Yahoo (YHOO) +5.2% premarket after Alibaba's Jack Ma states his interest in buying the company. Stifel Nicolaus sees a potential deal via a round of investment into Alibaba from parties that could include Microsoft (MSFT), Softbank and Silver Lake. But the sensitivity of personal online data being controlled by a company outside the U.S. would prompt a hard look from the U.S. government. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, September 16, 2011, 10:46 AM According to a source close to Microsoft's (MSFT) MSN division, Yahoo (YHOO) is in play (I, II, III) now that Carol Bartz is out of the picture. The source also believes Yahoo is far more attractive to Microsoft than AOL due to its U.S. media business, in spite of the challenges faced by online portals in the wake of Facebook's rise. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 3:59 PM Kara Swisher, who last week noted interest in Yahoo (YHOO +2.1%) from numerous parties, today reports several players are mulling bids for much or all of the company. The list may include VC and PE firms, SoftBank's (SFTBY.PK) Masa Son, disgruntled partner Alibaba (ALBCF.PK), and search partner Microsoft (MSFT). (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, September 13, 2011, 11:25 AM It's easy to come up with reasons why Facebook should not buy Yahoo (YHOO), but the social networking giant “has the ingredients to make Yahoo succeed, starting with a clear mission,” Rob Cox writes. Yahoo’s relatively robust display ad platform might appeal to Facebook, which is still building out capacity to sell such ads. They also share a partner (MSFT) and a nemesis (GOOG). Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 1:22 PM Refuting an earlier comment from a WSJ source, Yahoo (YHOO +4.4%) co-founder Jerry Yang says the company is "not for sale." Yang was CEO when Yahoo rejected buyout offers from Microsoft (MSFT) that reached a level of $33/share. (previously) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 5:38 PM Business Insider claims six companies have made informal bids for Hulu, with most coming at the upper end of a range of $500M-$2B. GOOG, AMZN, and YHOO are considered among the most interested parties, while AAPL and MSFT declined to make bids. One source claims Yahoo's offer could be torpedoed by its board. (previously) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, August 25, 2011, 11:51 AM Verizon (VZ) is stepping up its efforts to become a leading player in cloud services: Big Red is acquiring CloudSwitch, a developer of software that makes it easier for companies to move applications to cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AMZN), Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure, and Verizon's own Terremark offerings. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, August 22, 2011, 8:00 AM Skype, which recently announced a major deal with Facebook and is set to be acquired by Microsoft (MSFT), is purchasing GroupMe, a developer of a group messaging platform for mobile devices. GigaOm speculates the deal is both about strengthening Skype's mobile position, and about hedging against potential share losses in the PC space. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 17, 2011, 10:46 AM Macquarie's Kevin Smithen, who yesterday suggested Microsoft (MSFT) could make a bid for Motorola (MMI), believes Google (GOOG) could sell Motorola's set-top business to a PE buyer for $2B. Backing out the company's cash and tax assets, this could bring Google's purchase price for Motorola's patents and phone business down to about $5B. (previously) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, August 16, 2011, 3:42 PM Motorola (MMI) shares nudged higher a short while ago, after Macquarie's Kevin Smithen published a note suggesting Microsoft (MSFT) could make a counteroffer for the company. Yesterday, GigaOm reported Microsoft had made a bid for Motorola, but Motorola preferred Google's (GOOG) offer, since Microsoft was only interested in Motorola's patents. (previously) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, August 15, 2011, 1:25 PM Citi's Jim Suva is skeptical Research In Motion (RIMM +4.6%) will be acquired in the wake of the GOOG/MMI deal. Suva, who rates RIM a Sell, doesn't "see a clear strategic fit for other wireless vendors." Meanwhile, co-worker Walter Pritchard is among those who see Microsoft (MSFT) gaining if Google actively supports Motorola's phone business. (previously) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Quick Ideas]

"Our acquisition of Motorola (MMI) will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and other companies," says Larry Page on Google's (GOOG) blog.
Comment! [Tech, M&A, Consumer] - Wednesday, July 27, 2011, 3:47 PM "There should be a war crimes trial about that deal," says VC honcho Roger McNamee, contending Microsoft stole Skype from Silver Lake Partners. "They bought the last global, integrated telco left for half the value of Sprint (S)." MSFT shares were up 10% since the May purchase before today's 2.9% swoon. 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
