- Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 4:43 PM AOL, Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) announce a deal to share access to one another's premium online ad inventory. By early 2012, the companies' real-time bidding mechanisms will be integrated to allow more reach and scale for premium ads. AH: AOL +2.7%, MSFT -1.3%, YHOO -0.8%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 5:30 PM Openwave (OPWV) surges 29.3% AH after announcing a patent licensing deal with Microsoft (MSFT). The deal, reported 2 months after Openwave sued Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM), was the main factor behind the company's blowout FQ1 results (revenue of $52.4M and EPS of $0.11 vs. consensus of $34.3M and -$0.07). Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 27, 2011, 2:42 PM Shares of Office Depot (ODP) go on a tear, up 12.2%, helped along in part with an announcement that the office supply seller will enter a deal with Microsoft (MSFT +3.1%) to provide digital print solutions through the Bing business portal. Small business customers using Bing's online service will be able to create advertisements, sales collateral, and presentations that can be printed on demand at a local Office Depot store. Comment! [On the Move]
- Monday, October 24, 2011, 3:04 PM Yahoo (YHOO +3.2%) continues its strong October performance after Google's (GOOG) name gets thrown into the company's soap opera-esque buyout saga. Scott Cleland thinks Google is "playing with antitrust fire" by dancing with Yahoo. But perhaps Google's goal is to simply keep its rival out of Microsoft's (MSFT) hands by financing a competing bid. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 20, 2011, 4:09 PM Microsoft (MSFT): FQ1 EPS of $0.68 in-line. Revenue of $17.37B (+7% Y/Y) beats by $120M. MSFT -1.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 2:17 PM In spite of having risen the last 6 weeks on buyout speculation, Yahoo (YHOO +3.6%) is up again today following a Q3 EPS beat, and inline Q4 guidance that soothed investors fearing the worst. The company's statement about extending its search deal with Microsoft (MSFT) through March 2013 is also going over well. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 4:30 PM Yahoo (YHOO +10.1%), which took off on a report Microsoft (MSFT) is weighing a bid, drops 3.6% AH as Kara Swisher, who broke the first reports of buyout interest, says her sources tell her "Microsoft execs have taken pains to make it clear" they won't be bidding for Yahoo. She adds that much of the current M&A speculation is "being pumped up by bankers." 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 3:28 PM Fortune's man on deals, Dan Primack cracks, "wouldn't it be bigger news if Microsoft (MSFT) wasn't at least 'considering' bidding for Yahoo (YHOO)." He also says Mister Softee's big purchases tend to "(come) out of nowhere," while the rumored ones never pan out. YHOO +8.9%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 3:03 PM Yahoo (YHOO +8.8%) surges on a rumor Microsoft (MSFT) is considering a bid for the company. (more) 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Thursday, September 29, 2011, 10:37 AM It's still a momentum trade - to the downside. Netflix (NFLX -8.8%) sinks on no fresh news, but shares broke through $125 yesterday so now people want to dump them. Competition hurts: Amazon’s (AMZN) new Kindle will let users stream movies, and Microsoft (MSFT) will get some pay TV content from Comcast (CMCSA) and Verizon (VZ) streamed to its Xbox Live. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 9:55 AM Microsoft (MSFT +1.9%) spikes higher following its smartphone deal with Samsung (SSNLF.PK). Nokia (NOK +1.2%) and InterDigital (IDCC +5.6%) could also be gaining on the news - the former due to the deal's bolstering of the Windows Phone ecosystem, the latter due to the way the deal highlights the value of wireless IP. (previously) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 22, 2011, 11:23 AM Red Hat (RHT +3.9%) is still up strongly after posting solid FQ2 results (I, II), and raising its FQ3 and FY12 revenue forecasts. CEO Jim Whitehurst boasts Red Hat's Linux OS is a popular choice for cloud server deployments, and declares Microsoft's (MSFT) cloud offerings to be late to the game. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 10:12 AM Microsoft (MSFT -0.8%) gets a boost when Hilliard Lyons analyst Stephen Turner initiates coverage with a Long Term Buy rating and a PT of $29.50 on the strength of product innovation and revenue backlog. Add Turner to the list of pundits who think MSFT will increase its dividend payout, as he says the company is "shareholder friendly" and will reward investors due to a record level of free cash flow. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 8:44 AM Shares of STMicroelectronics (STM) are up 7% premarket, as the tech concern gains with other downtrodden European chipmakers. The company demonstrated its Windows 8 sensors at the BUILD conference this week and is working closely with Microsoft (MSFT) on development. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 10:53 AM Maybe Yahoo's (YHOO +3.2%) biggest problem is chairman Roy Bostock, not Carol Bartz. Bostock was board chairman when Microsoft (MSFT) made its $31/share bid for Yahoo in 2008, and his latest gaffe of firing Bartz over the phone was "an act of cowardice [that] allowed Bartz to immediately manage the public relations of the event," Doug McIntyre writes. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, August 26, 2011, 1:25 PM Tech stocks are a source of leadership today, as the sector has the Nasdaq well in front of its counterparts, +2.3% and on pace for a 5.5% weekly gain. ARUN +20.8% and P +6.4% are jumping after upbeat earnings; RIMM +3.1% and VMW +4.9% move on research upgrades. Stalwarts MSFT +2.8%, INTC +2.1% and CSCO +2% are among the Dow's leaders. Comment!
