    Microsoft (MSFT) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) will invest $250M in a three-year agreement on simplifying technology environments for business. The project involves collaborating on a roadmap for data management involving hardware, software and services, and advancing cloud computing.

    "It was a little tougher internally than I think I had anticipated," says Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, giving herself a B-minus on her first year as chief. Bartz says she would have moved faster to reorganize the company and to form a search deal with Microsoft (MSFT).

    Stocks overall rebounded to trade flat - and might stay there today, as traders seem to look a day ahead to December's jobs report. Nasdaq is lagging other indexes and tech's dragging, as heavy selling affects Intel (INTC -2.1%), Microsoft (MSFT -1.6%) and Apple (AAPL -0.3%). At midday, the DJIA flat at 10,576; S&P 500 +0.1% to 1,138; Nasdaq -0.5% to 2,291. Crude -0.5%. Natural gas -2.9%. Gold -0.4%.

    With the wraps off the Google (GOOG -0.4%) phone, Walt Mossberg weighs in, calling it the "bold new face in super-smartphones." Aside from the multiple comparisons of its hardware to the iPhone (AAPL), Dan Frommer says the real difference is how Google flips the purchasing model: phone first, then carriers compete for you, the customer.     Kia Motors America is teaming up with Microsoft (MSFT) on a hands-free voice control system for its cars. Kia's system, called UVO, will be the first direct competition for Ford's (F) Sync, which is also based on Microsoft technology.
