Monday, May 13, 11:04 AM Russian steel and coal producer OAO Mechel (MTL -4.4%) reports Q1 coking sales rose 13% Q/Q but fell 11% Y/Y, while sales of anthracite increased 19% Q/Q and fell 12% Y/Y. Coal output dropped 8% and steel output slipped 9% on the quarter, but MTL sees signs of improving market conditions, particularly for metallurgical coal in the Asia and North America. Comment! Demand for the company's coking coal has suffered amid slowing Chinese growth and financial trouble across Europe. The net loss attributable to shareholders was $1.7B. Friday, March 22, 11:14 AM Russian miner Mechel OAO (MTL -1.6%) says its subsidiary will supply 960 tonnes of coking coal per year to Baosteel, a leading Chinese steel company. The price will be determined on a monthly basis.
