- Wednesday, February 6, 2:42 PM After declining 7% last year thanks to nosediving prices, NAND flash memory sales will grow 14% this year to $22.4B, IHS predicts. Cautious investment plans from top suppliers such as SanDisk (SNDK), Micron (MU), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) have already fueled hopes of a better pricing environment. Unsurprisingly, IHS sees smartphone, tablet, and SSD sales driving 2013 growth - the firm estimates the iPhone single-handedly accounted for 10.5% of 2012 NAND consumption, and all other smartphones 10.4%. (hard drive forecast) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 5, 5:56 PM Micron (MU) -0.8% AH after announcing a $440M debt refinancing move. The memory maker plans to issue convertible senior notes due 2033, and use the proceeds to repurchase a portion of its 1.875% convertible senior notes due 2014. Micron, which is using debt to help finance the Elpida acquisition, had $3.4B in debt on its balance sheet as of Nov. 28 to go with $3.2B in cash and investments. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 30, 1:33 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) and Globalfoundries have won the bidding to acquire 300mm chip manufacturing equipment from Taiwan's Powerchip, sources tell Digitimes. Look for TI to use the gear to grow its analog chip capacity - the company has been counting on superior economies of scale to gain share in this space. The sources note the sale could benefit the DRAM industry (and thus manufacturers such as Samsung and Micron) by further lowering capacity. (yesterday) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 29, 11:28 AM OCZ (OCZ -13.6%) and (to a lesser extent STEC (STEC -3.7%) sell off following soft guidance from EMC and Seagate. Seagate's $40M investment in and reseller deal with PCI-Express server flash card maker Virident might also be taking a toll. QLogic (QLGC -1.3%), Mellanox (MLNX -2%), Brocade (BRCD -1%), Micron (MU -1.7%), and SanDisk (SNDK -0.9%) are posting moderate declines. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 24, 12:12 PM SanDisk (SNDK +4.1%) is an Apple supplier and issued light guidance on its earnings call ... yet shares have rallied to within $2 of their 52-week high. Why? Because the guidance - Q1 revenue of $1.225B-$1.3B ($1.37B consensus) and 2013 revenue of $5.3B-$5.6B ($6.01B consensus) - is accompanied by a forecast for just 30%-40% NAND flash industry bit growth, and lower bit growth from SanDisk. That's fueling hopes of a healthier pricing/margin environment - gross margin fell 300 bps Y/Y in Q4 to 39.9%. Needham has upgraded shares to Buy. MU +0.8%. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, January 18, 1:55 PM Contract prices for several popular PC DRAM chips and modules surged 8%-11% in 1H January, per DRAMeXchange. Major production cuts appear to be responsible - top manufacturers have been steadily shifting capacity to mobile/server DRAM and NAND flash memory in the face of slumping PC demand. Sources tell occasionally-accurate Digitimes supply constraints will continue lifting prices until early February. (Micron/Nanya) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, January 17, 4:58 PM Micron (MU) has agreed to purchase all of the DRAM manufactured by its Inotera JV; previously, Micron and JV partner Nanya each purchased half of Inotera's output. Also, Nanya (29% stake) will no longer take part in a DRAM R&D program with Micron (40% stake), and has obtained a royalty-bearing IP license from the U.S. memory maker. The JV amendment increases Micron's DRAM sales clout ahead of the closing of the Elpida deal. (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, January 17, 12:12 PM Down initially following its Q4 report, ASML (ASML +8%) is now rallying strongly. Though revenue was below estimates, EPS was above, and the lithography giant guided for 2013 sales to be "at a similar level to that of 2012" thanks to a 2H demand pickup. That's going over well in light of bleak industry forecasts. ASML sees investments in advanced 14-20nm processes driving demand, though it expects the memory industry to "continue investing at a minimum level" (a positive for SNDK and MU). CYMI +6.2%. KLAC +6.5%. LRCX +3.3%. AMAT +1.8%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, January 17, 10:19 AM Micron (MU +2.5%) moves a step closer to owning Elpida after a U.S. bankruptcy court signs off on Elpida's IP licensing deal with Micron and $15M patent sale to Rambus (RMBS +1.2%) over the objections of U.S. bondholders. The decision comes less than 3 months after a Tokyo court approved the Micron-Elpida deal and dismissed an alternate proposal from bondholders. Elpida creditors have until the end of February to vote on the Micron deal. (previous) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:18 PM Another day, another Apple supplier selloff due to iPhone sales worries. CRUS -2.8%. NTE -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. SWKS -2.5%. AVGO -1.5%. LPL -3.5% MU -1.9%. Cirrus Logic now trades at just 7.3x FY14 (ends March '14) EPS, putting it squarely in value territory provided estimates don't get cut too much - Sterne Agee thinks iPhone order cuts are already baked into March quarter Cirrus estimates. Skyworks is at 8.4x FY14E (ends Sep. '14) EPS. (yesterday) (Multi-Fineline warning) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 11, 11:27 AM Global PC shipments, Windows 8 hardware and all, fell 6.4% Y/Y to 89.8M in Q4, according to IDC. That's slightly better than Q3's 8.6% drop, but worse than a forecast for a 4.4% decline. The decline might have been larger if inventory replenishment didn't lead U.S. shipments to fall a relatively modest 4.5%. IDC still considers H-P (HPQ -2.1%) the world's top vendor, and estimates its share rose 90 bps Y/Y to 16.8%. But #3 Dell's (DELL -1.6%) share fell 190 bps to 10.6%. Apple's U.S. share rose 50 bps to 11.4%. AMD -1.9%. STX -1.3%. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 10, 11:10 AM Microsoft (MSFT -0.9%) edges lower after Morgan Stanley downgrades shares to Equal-weight. "Win 8 is disappointing, the PC market will remain weak for awhile and margins are likely capped. As such, the stock is likely range-bound," the firm argues, while adding the fact 60% of businesses are now on Win. 7 will hurt corporate PC sales. However, it grants the PC issues may be priced in at 8x EPS. Yesterday, BGC forecast a 6% Y/Y drop in Q4 PC sales, but argued Microsoft still has much going for it in its enterprise ops. (Argus) 8 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, January 7, 10:10 AM Micron (MU +4.3%) rallies after being added to Citi's Top Picks Live list; the firm sees a cyclical rebound in memory prices giving Micron a lift. Citi's comments arrive as Digitimes reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and others have raised their contract prices for 4GB PC DRAM modules following major 2012 declines. (Drexel Hamilton) (FQ3 results) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, January 3, 12:13 PM Rambus (RMBS -3.6%) and Micron (MU +4.4%) head in opposite directions after Rambus is sanctioned yet again for destroying documents relevant to its memory IP suits (previous). The latest ruling comes 14 months after a jury cleared Micron and Hynix of memory price-fixing to prevent the adoption of Rambus' RDRAM memory. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 5:49 AM A judge yesterday reiterated her ruling that memory chip company Rambus (RMBS) can not use 12 of its patents to demand royalties from Micron Technology (MU). The verdict is a punishment for Rambus improperly destroying documentary evidence related to a lawsuit involving Micron. Judge Sue Robinson's verdict came after an appeal court asked her to explain more fully her initial ruling. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 2:46 PM Micron (MU) investors on edge over the poor performance of the company's DRAM ops in FQ1 (the result of weak PC DRAM volumes/pricing) can take some comfort in the fact mobile DRAM shipments rose 37% Q/Q in Q3 and grew to account for 24% of total volumes, per IHS iSuppli. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) towered over the mobile DRAM market with a 58% share, whereas Micron only had 3%. But Elpida, which Micron is about to digest, controlled 15% of the market. (previous) Comment!
