- Monday, October 15, 2012, 11:44 AM ChipMOS (IMOS -7.8%) plunges after reporting Q3 revenue of $175.5M (+6.4% Y/Y), and stating it expects Q4 revenue to be flat to -5% Q/Q. The chip packaging/testing services firm's Q4 revenue consensus stands at $179.4M. Soft DRAM packaging sales are said to be offsetting strong LCD driver and flash memory testing sales. The report could have negative implications for DRAM makers such as Micron (MU -0.1%). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 7:17 PM Goldman doesn't see NAND flash memory vendors making "meaningful capacity additions" through mid-2013, even though Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Hynix, and Toshiba have all cut supply lately. Demand growth, meanwhile, is holding steady, and could see upside if cheaper solid-state drives (courtesy of low-cost chips from Samsung) are rapidly adopted. This leads the firm to lift its target on SanDisk (SNDK) to $52 from $45. Micron (MU) also benefits from a favorable supply/demand balance. (price hikes) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11:44 AM A Japanese court has again delayed a ruling on competing plans to restructure bankrupt Elpida - a recommendation is now expected by Oct. 29. Elpida has backed a deal in which Micron (MU -0.3%) would acquire the memory maker for ~$2.5B in equity and debt considerations, but some Elpida bondholders aren't happy with the deal's terms, and have submitted an alternate proposal. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 1:24 PM Micron (MU +1.1%) is edging higher in spite of ts FQ4 miss, as investors focus on its NAND flash business more than its DRAM business. During Micron's earnings call, execs made favorable remarks about NAND pricing and cost reductions, while admitting PC DRAM sales are getting hit by weak prices, high inventories, and OEM caution. Multiple analysts are bullish on expectations the Elpida deal will lower industry supply and boost cash flow, but Nomura is worried Micron won't turn profitable before next summer. SNDK +0.5%. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 4:10 PM Micron Technology (MU): FQ4 EPS of -$0.24 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $1.96B (-8% Y/Y) misses by $170M. Shares +0.8% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]

- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 11:04 AM It's time to take profits on SanDisk (SNDK -3.7%), suggests JMP's Alex Gauna, who's downgrading shares to Market Perform following a 45% run-up from June lows. High expectations, a slowdown in NAND pricing improvements, and iPhone 5 supply constraints could affect shares ahead of SanDisk's Q3 report, Gauna argues. On Friday, Avian urged caution with SanDisk due to stabilizing pricing and soft demand in certain end-markets. NAND rival Micron (MU -3.1%) is also lower. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, September 24, 2012, 10:34 AM Micron (MU -3%) slumps in response to a downgrade to Sector Perform from Pac Crest's Monika Garg, who's worried about poor PC demand and DRAM pricing. Garg notes DRAM prices are down 21% over the last 3 months, and expects Micron to "post losses for a couple more quarters." Shares could also be getting hurt by Apple's iPhone 5 data , given acquisition target Elpida is supplying DRAM for the device. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 9:17 AM The first iPhone 5 teardowns are out, courtesy of iFixit and Chipworks. Parts found include Qualcomm (QCOM +0.7%) baseband, power management, and transceiver chips, Elpida (MU +1.6%) DRAM, two Avago (AVGO +2.2%) 4G power amplifier modules, Skyworks (SWKS +3% - previous) 2G and 3G amplifier modules, a TriQuint (TQNT +5.2%) 3G amplifier module, two STMicroelectronics (STM -1.3%) motion sensors, and a Broadcom (BRCM +2.2%) touchscreen controller and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip. 10 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 6:33 PM The world's 4 biggest NAND flash memory suppliers - SanDisk (SNDK), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Toshiba, and SK Hynix - are reportedly planning to hike prices by 10%-15% by mid-November thanks to surging smartphone demand. Apple (AAPL) is said to be an especially voracious NAND buyer, fully booking SanDisk and Hynix's spare capacity as it shifts orders away from Samsung. SanDisk and Micron (MU) rallied yesterday on hopes of a favorable NAND supply/demand balance. (IDC tablet forecast) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 11:30 AM Chip equipment stocks plunge following a report Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will cut its chip capex by half next year, following a major 2012 increase. AMAT -2%. KLAC -3.6%. LRCX -3.3%. UTEK -2.9%. ASML -2.6%. CYMI -3.1%. Barclays is "highly skeptical" of the report, but does think Samsung's capex could fall by a third. On the flip side, the report is giving a lift to SanDisk (SNDK +3.8%) and Micron (MU +3%), given it bodes well for next year's DRAM and NAND flash supply/demand balances. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 5:25 PM Mike Rayfield, who recently resigned as Nvidia's (NVDA) mobile processor chief, has been hired by Micron (MU) to be the head of its Wireless Solutions Group. This puts Rayfield in charge of all sales of Micron products, including DRAM, NAND flash, and NOR flash, to the mobile industry. Much of Micron's flash output is used in mobile devices, and the Elpida acquisition will make the company a big player in mobile DRAM (not to mention a major Apple supplier). Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, September 14, 2012, 2:24 PM PCs now account for less than half of all DRAM consumption, says IHS iSuppli: the firm expects this number to fall to 42.8% by the end of 2013, as PC demand remains weak and smartphone/tablet consumption keeps surging - the iPhone 5 is believed to contain 1GB of DRAM, and Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S III contains 2GB. Micron's (MU) purchase of Elpida had much to do with boosting the company's mobile DRAM exposure. Following a 1H respite, PC DRAM prices are tumbling once again. (DRAM inelasticity) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 6:19 PM PC DRAM prices fell again in 2H August, DRAMeXchange reports: declining orders from struggling PC OEMs led prices for 4GB and 2GB modules to drop 4% and 2.4%, respectively. Top DRAM makers are said to be allocating more capacity to server and mobile chips, which are seeing healthier demand, but the industry still depends heavily on PC sales. (1H August) (price inelasticity) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, September 7, 2012, 10:12 AM Intel's (INTC -2.8%) warning is hurting other chip stocks with strong PC exposure: AMD -3.4%. NVDA -4.5%. MU -4.6%. H-P (HPQ -1.4%), Microsoft (MSFT -1.3%), Seagate (STX -1.6%), and Western Digital (WDC -1.4%) are off moderately, though Dell (DELL +0.9%) is higher after declaring its first dividend. Analysts had been slashing estimates (I, II, III) for Intel ahead of the warning thanks to a torrent of negative PC data - that seems to be limiting the damage. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
