- Thursday, December 8, 2011, 11:55 AM Hackers are constantly trying to break into energy sector computer systems, and while there has yet to be a major incident, the consequences would be catastrophic. An intrusion in the oil sector "will cost lives and it will cost production, (and) it will cost money," as well as huge environmental damage, says a Shell (RDS.A) IT manager. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Sunday, November 20, 2011, 1:54 PM Barron's says Murphy Oil (MUR) could gain 40% within the year - assuming it can shake its E&P slump - echoing Bret Jensen's thoughts earlier this month. On its recent Q3 earnings call, CEO David Wood promised "attractive year-on-year growth" in 2012 as MUR ramps up in the Eagle Ford Shale and Seal areas. Comment! [Quick Ideas, Energy]

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar yesterday unveiled proposals to hold 15 lease sales for oil and gas drilling in 2012-2017 in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Alaska. However, Atlantic and Pacific sites will remain off-limits.

- Wednesday, October 5, 2011, 12:34 PM Murphy Oil (MUR +3.6%) gains after being upgraded on valuation to focus-stock status by a Howard Weil. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 1, 2011, 5:18 PM Valero Energy (VLO) acquires Murphy Oil's Meraux, Louisiana refinery and related logistics assets for $325M, plus inventories currently estimated at approximately $300M. VLO +0.3%, MUR +0.6% AH. Comment! [Energy]
- Friday, August 12, 2011, 2:15 PM Big Q2 drops in oil production at more than 20 major oil companies are startling, even accounting for lost Libyan production, Deutsche Bank says, and are not likely to be offset by unconventional deepwater or shale E&P projects, except at XOM, OXY and MRO. Wall Street will need to ratchet down its estimates, and oil prices could rise to $120/barrel. 2 Comments [Energy, Commodities, Global & FX]

- Monday, May 16, 2011, 8:23 AM The U.S. Army opens the Morganza Spillway to divert water from the swollen Mississippi. This should protect New Orleans, Baton Rouge, a nuclear plant and eight refineries.
