- Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: CONE +9%. SLCA +4%. MXIM +4%. LNC +4%. MHR +3%.
After-hours top losers: SCSS -7%. CCK -4%. SNDK -3%. NAVB -3%. EBAY -2%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, March 15, 1:38 PM A Chinese site has already torn down a local version of Samsung's Galaxy S IV. Discovered parts include a Qualcomm (QCOM) 3G baseband chip, an Intel (INTC) baseband chip and RF transceiver, TriQuint (TQNT) and Skyworks (SWKS) power amplifiers, Synaptics (SYNA) and Atmel (ATML) controllers, and a Broadcom (BRCM) GPS receiver. A Qualcomm baseband/app processor is expected in the U.S. version. RBC thinks thinks 70M S IV units could be sold this year, and sees Broadcom (NFC chip and a combo chip with high-speed Wi-Fi to go with the GPS chip) and Maxim (MXIM - power management and infrared chips) benefiting. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 10:12 AM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV is coming into focus. EVLeaks, a pretty reputable source of gadget scoops, reports the device will have a 5" 1080p OLED display, a 13MP camera, and 2GB of RAM (generally in-line with past rumors). Meanwhile, the NYT reports the S IV, set to be unveiled on March 14, will feature the ability to "track a user’s eyes to determine where to scroll." Possible/likely suppliers: PANL, MXIM, SWKS, ADNC. QCOM might supply a Snaprdragon processor for the U.S. version, but Samsung's Exynos Octa appears to power the international version. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 6, 1:03 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) anticipated Galaxy S IV will be announced on March 15, SamMobile reports - the site has been an accurate source of Samsung rumors in the past. The device will reportedly go on sale in Europe and Asia in April, and hit North America in May or June. Rumored specs include a 5" 1080p OLED display, Exynos 5 Octa processor (for some models, at least), and 13MP camera. Possible/likely suppliers (I, II) include BRCM, QCOM, PANL, SWKS, ADNC, and MXIM. 42 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 24, 5:18 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) Cirrus Logic (CRUS - earnings) expects FQ4 revenue of $200M-$220M, below a $234.9M consensus. This seems priced in following recent events. 2) Maxim (MXIM - earnings) expects FQ3 revenue of $580M-$610M and EPS of $0.39-$0.43, in-line with a consensus of $599.2M and $0.40. 3) Flextronics (FLEX - earnings) expects FQ4 revenue of $5B-$5.3B and EPS of $0.11-$0.15, below a consensus of $5.69B and $0.20. CRUS +1% AH. FLEX -7.7%. MXIM unchanged. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 24, 4:10 PM Maxim Integrated (MXIM): FQ2 EPS of $0.42 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $605M (+2% Y/Y) misses by $5.21M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, January 23, 1:25 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has passed Apple to become the world's top chip buyer, per Gartner: the firm estimates Samsung accounted for 8% of global chip purchases last year thanks to a 28.9% increase in consumption to $23.9B. Apple bought $21.4B worth of chips (7.2% share), and H-P $14B (4.7%). Samsung is trying to source more of those chips internally, as evidenced by last year's acquisitions (I, II). Some major Samsung mobile chip suppliers: SWKS, RFMD, MXIM, BRCM, QCOM. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, January 14, 1:48 PM Analog chipmaker/Samsung supplier Maxim (MXIM -2.5%) is off following a downgrade to Neutral from Credit Suisse: the firm says it expects "a significant deceleration" in the mobile phone market (36% of Maxim's sales and a major growth driver) going forward, though it thinks healthy industrial/telecom equipment exposure will buffer the blow. Analog Devices (ADI +0.1%) and Xilinx (XLNX) have been upgraded to Outperform (I, II), but neither is moving much - in each case, CS likes the chipmaker's industrial/telecom infrastructure exposure. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, January 4, 9:50 AM Silicon Image (SIMG -8.7%) opens down sharply after warning it expects Q4 revenue of $59M-$60M, below prior guidance of $64M-$67M and a consensus of $65.7M. The chipmaker blames "the rescheduling of certain orders by a large customer," and says it expects Q1 product sales to be up Q/Q. Is that "large customer" Samsung? SIMG supplies MHL video transmitter chips for the Galaxy S III and other Samsung smartphones. Other key Samsung chip suppliers include MXIM, SWKS, BRCM, and ADNC. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 10:02 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is currently aiming to sell 510M mobile phones next year, up from a 2012 tally of ~420M. A whopping 390M of the 2013 sales are expected to involve smartphones, with the company predicting demand for 4G connections will boost sales. Gartner is forecasting global smartphone sales will rise another 33% next year; they rose 47% Y/Y in Q3, a quarter in which Samsung was estimated by Strategy Analytics to have sold 56.9M smartphones. 2 Comments [Tech]
