- Wednesday, April 24, 2:37 PM Nabors Industries (NBR -2.8%) reverses gains made at the open to trade lower on a mixed Q1 result late yesterday. Net profits fell 26% Y/Y as the drilling contractor was hit by weaker profits across all its main business segments, including a steep decline in its U.S. drilling and rig-services division. During its call, the company noted that it's looking to shed its E&P assets, including its barges and jackup rigs, and says its hired an outside adviser to review its assets over the summer. Comment! [Earnings, On the Move, Commodities]
- Friday, April 5, 2:12 PM Nabors Industries (NBR +4.8%) rallies after yesterday's move to add two independent directors to its board under pressure from its largest shareholder, Pamplona Capital. NBR CEO Anthony Petrello says the board is evaluating strategies to enhance shareholder value, including improving its capital structure, reviewing its mix of businesses and improving operating performance. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 20, 2:29 PM Nabors Industries (NBR -6.7%) shares swoon after dismal Q4 results which Tudor Pickering analysts call "messy/disappointing," saying no business line is the single culprit but lower baseline suggests weaker than expected 2013 EPS. Positives included ~$460M in net debt reduction and nine additional long-term land rig contracts, but those were "overshadowed by operational shortfall." Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 19, 5:16 PM More on Nabors' (NBR) Q4 results: Adjusted operating earnings for the U.S. lower 48 land-drilling business, NBR's largest segment, fell 27% Y/Y, while its completion and production services segment dropped 50% amid weakness in the domestic pressure-pumping business. Expects a marked decline in Q1 income given low rig counts and depressed spot market rates. Shares -2.3% AH. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 3:59 PM It's a glorious day for the energy and oil services sectors, powering to the top of the Wall Street leaderboard after Goldman Sachs says January marked a "turnaround" in profitability for the group. Among the day's top gainers: HAL +6.2%, NBR +4.3%, SLB +3.7%, HP +3.3%, WFT +2.5%, BHI +2.4%. ETFs: OIH +2.9%, XES +2.9%, XLE +0.8%. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 9:19 AM Nabors Industries (NBR) +3.4% premarket after Goldman Sachs upgrades shares to Conviction Buy from Neutral which a $23 target, up from $17. Goldman sees several catalysts, including "inflecting NAM rig activity leading to multiple expansion as in prior cycles, [and] margin inflection, as NBR is significantly under-earning with Q4 margins below mid-2009 levels; no other peer is that low." Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 2:53 PM Shares of Nabors Industries (NBR +5.6%) pop as Pamplona Capital discloses an 8.8% activist stake via a 13D filing. The fund says it has "become increasingly concerned about the underperformance of the common stock relative to its peer group and the market, [NBR's] problems experienced with achieving various aspects of its strategic plan and its declining market share." Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 2:11 PM Nabors Industries (NBR -5.2%) is downgraded to Underperform from Hold with a $13 price target (down from $15) by Jefferies, which says "we lack confidence that NBR can recover significant market share in U.S. land, see some risks to our flat dayrate outlook and lower our pressure pumping outlook for '13." Among land drillers, the firm prefers Helmerich & Payne (HP -1.5%). Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 3:42 PM Nabors Industries (NBR -2%) shares reverse course, turning south as quarterly results settle in. CEO Tony Petrello says NBR is planning close to $1B of disposals in the next year to meet debt reduction targets, despite struggles to offload certain assets. Apart from Eagle Ford property that should be sold by the year end, sales of E&P assets are effectively on hold. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 11:40 AM Nabors Industries (NBR +1.4%) shares push to solid gains after the oil and gas drilling contractor posted a 1.9% Q/Q gain in Q3 earnings on strong growth in its international business, but UBS analysts say international earnings might be curtailed in the next few quarters on rising labor costs in the Middle East, idled rigs and other technical factors. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 10:40 AM Nabors Industries (NBR -3.8%) is downgraded to Neutral with a $16 target price (down from $17) at Global Hunter to reflect lower estimates for the current quarter through 2013. The firm says activity across most business lines is tracking below its prior forecast and is unlikely to meet expectations given the current fundamental headwinds impacting its product lines. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 12:01 PM Options have been bullish in energy companies for several weeks, and now it's Nabors Industries' (NBR +3.5%) turn as shares power higher for the second straight day. OptionMonster is seeing sizable buying in Sept. 16 and 17 calls on triple the average daily volume; calls outnumbered puts yesterday by five to one, a reflection of the bullish sentiment. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 2:44 PM Barclays lowers its earnings estimates and stock price target on Nabors (NBR +1.9%) "to reflect the unfolding pressure on land rig dayrates and utilization faced by the land drillers, continued deterioration in the stimulation market, and the increased potential that the rig count will trend down modestly in 2H12." Yesterday, NBR warned on Q2 profits based on weak pressure pumping results. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 11:54 AM Nabors Industries (NBR +3.9%) powers higher, as its warning of weaker than expected Q2 earnings is not a surprise. "E&P companies are extracting significant pricing concessions to the detriment of oilfield services companies," Simmons analyst Bill Herbert says, citing a "significant compression" in oil prices threatening the oil drilling boom that has buoyed the entire industry. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 8:49 AM Nabors Industries (NBR) -1.9% premarket after saying its Q2 profit will fall short of expectations, hurt by weak pressure pumping results and a $150M charge for the drop in the value of its portion of gas fields held by its NFR Energy affiliate. NBR also adopts a shareholder rights plan, allowing rights to purchase new preferred stock. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 9:48 AM Nabors Industries (NBR +2.4%) shares could jump to $30 on an upswing in natural gas prices, Barron's believes. NBR, which raised investors' ire with its generous perks and packages for its former CEO, is back on track with a strategic and cultural transformation thanks to new CEO Anthony Petrello, the weekend report says.
