Tuesday, May 14, 1:49 PM PayPal (EBAY) is pulling out all the stops to challenge Square in the iPad cash register space: it's now offering free payment processing for 2013 to any U.S. business that exchanges a register for a PayPal Here solution, which includes a stand, cash drawer, and printer. Meanwhile, Square is rolling out a $299 stand/card swiper for its iPad solution, and Groupon (GRPN) is launching a register app, rebranding its mobile payments unit (includes a restaurant app) as Breadcrumb, and offering $5K in free payment processing to new clients. VeriFone (PAY) and NCR, whose traditional offerings are threatened by the likes of Square, also offer iPad point-of-sale solutions, as does NetSuite's (N) Retail Anywhere unit. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]

Tuesday, January 15, 9:53 AM PayPal (EBAY) and point-of-sale hardware king NCR are joining forces in an attempt to challenge Square and its meteoric rise. PayPal will be offered as a payment option at restaurants supporting NCR's Mobile Pay app (works with NCR's Aloha systems), and PayPal's own apps will handle payments at NCR-supporting restaurants. Given NCR's systems are used by half of all major U.S. retail chains, the tie-up could easily be expanded. Thursday, January 10, 2:39 PM NetSuite (N -1.1%) has acquired Retail Anywhere, a developer of point-of-sale (POS) software for retailers, for an undisclosed sum. NetSuite argues a combo of Retail Anywhere's offerings, which include mobile, analytics, and inventory management software, and NetSuite's SuiteCommerce e-commerce platform allow it to deliver an end-to-end retail solution. The purchase puts NetSuite in competition with NCR, which recently announced it's buying POS software firm Retalix. (more) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 4:41 PM NCR (NCR) is selling $500M worth of 4.625% senior notes due 2021. The company plans to use the proceeds, along with existing cash and credit facility borrowings, to finance its $650M acquisition of Retalix. NCR had $1.41B in debt on its balance sheet as of Sep. 30, along with $581M in cash and equivalents. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 4:13 PM NCR officially announces it's buying Retalix (RTLX) for $30/share in cash, or $650M. The deal is (unsurprisingly, since it's cash-based) expected to be accretive to 2013 earnings, and is seen closing in Q1. NCR claims Retalix's software and services, used in over 70K retail locations, demonstrates its "transformation to a hardware-enabled, software-driven business model." CC at 5:30 PM ET (webcast). Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 3:00 PM Retalix (RTLX +25.9%) has soared above $27/share on a report from Israel's Calcalist (Google translation) NCR (NCR -0.4%) is buying the company for $30-$31/share. Talks are said to be in the final stages, with a deal expected shortly.
