- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 9:30 AM Amazon (AMZN) strikes a deal with NBCUniversal that allows Lovefilm members in the U.K. streaming rights to Universal Pictures titles. Lovefilm keeps upping the ante in the U.K. after Netflix (NFLX) arrived on the streaming scene and with BSkyB (BSYBY.PK) now also in the mix. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, May 24, 2012, 12:13 PM Netflix (NFLX) is a "frenemy" of the cable industry, Cox CEO Patrick Esser maintains. While admitting Netflix is a content rival, Esser also notes 40% of Cox's broadband customers streamed Netflix content in March. Netflix content chief Ted Sarandros (previous) admits his company is cannibalizing some cable viewing, while adding Netflix's investments in original programming are due to its inability to license content from the likes of HBO and Showtime. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 1:47 PM AMC Networks' (AMCX -0.1%) Mad Men ratings have been soaring, and Netflix (NFLX +3%), which last year struck a costly deal to carry old episodes, is taking credit. The 1.1M viewer increase seen for the debut episode of Season 5 relative to Season 4's average is the result of viewers watching earlier seasons on Netflix, suggests content chief Ted Sarandos. His comments come as many suspect Netflix is hurting ratings for Disney (DIS) and Viacom's (VIA) kids TV shows. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 5:51 PM Driving home its commitment to financing original programming at the expense of library size, Netflix (NFLX -5.6%) has created a new position of VP of Original Content. Filling the position is content acquisition VP Cindy Holland, whose current job will be assumed by Latin America/Canada content acquisition chief Jason Ropell. The shakeup comes on a day when Netflix made new lows for 2012. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, May 21, 2012, 11:58 AM Hulu continues to add to its arsenal of original content (previous). The latest additions include movie-review show Spoilers, travel series Up to Speed, and U.K.-based comedy Rev. Netflix (NFLX) has been investing in plenty of original content of its own. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, May 18, 2012, 10:42 AM Caris' David Miller, a long-time Netflix (NFLX -2%) bear (previous), slashes his PT on the company to $56 from $72, and suggests it's tapping out its U.S. addressable market. Netflix's guidance for Q2 domestic streaming net adds of just 200K-800K had much to do with its massive post-earnings selloff. (also) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 11:26 AM Needham's Charlie Wolf is reiterating an Underperform on Netflix (NFLX -2%) and slashing his estimates, arguing the decline in Netflix's high-margin DVD business will make it hard to offset international losses with domestic profits. However, Wolf, long bearish on Netflix, does grant the company is bringing its content costs in-line with streaming growth. Meanwhile the L.A. Times notes some downbeat comments from CFO David Wells (previous) about Netflix's Latin American ops. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 11:26 AM Disney (DIS -0.5%) plans to launch a new video site that serves as a portal for clips and movie trailers, as well as select YouTube videos as a Google-Disney content deal starts to bear fruit. A beta version of the site tips off that it's formatted to work on mobile devices and tablets. If successful, the family-oriented portion of the online video portal could offer serious competition with Netflix's (NFLX -1.9%) Just for Kids platform. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 16, 2012, 5:24 PM As Netflix (NFLX -4.2%) has another down day, CFO David Wells proclaims customers who cancelled their subscriptions last year due to displeasure with Netflix's price hike are rejoining the service, and that rejoining subscribers (those who left a year ago or less) amount to 1/3 of new subscriptions. Of course, that might also be a sign of slowing first-time subscriber adds. Separately, Netflix is rolling out a revamped web video player. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 3:28 PM Eddy Elfenbein's list of 13 "way, way, way overpriced" stocks: AMZN, MMI, CRM, NFLX, KO, WFM, COST, SRCL, SBUX, NKE, ARBA, CMG, ISRG. 15 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, May 11, 2012, 12:09 PM Shares of Netflix (NFLX +6.6%) trade higher on enthusiasm kicked up by an insider buy and a survey showing the company isn't quite as annoying as it once was to consumers. After its clumsy handling of its decision to split its DVD and streaming business set the customer satisfaction bar low, the company is now trending higher - although its still trails Amazon and Apple by a fair distance. 4 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, May 11, 2012, 10:54 AM Netflix (NFLX +5.1%) pops after Director Jay Hoag, also founding general partner of Technology Crossover Ventures, recently bought 200K shares. The purchases occurred on May 8 and 9 at prices of $71.20-$74.39, worth ~$14.5M; before these buys, Hoag had been a seller in the $100-$270 range. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 9:20 AM Gordon Gekko is coming to Latin America. Netflix (NFLX) announces a deal with 20th-Century Fox (NWS, NWSA) that gives it Latin streaming rights for 24, Prison Break, and four other TV shows, as well as a set of classic films that includes Wall Street. Netflix has lined up many Latin American content partners (I, II), but its Q1 international subscriber and profit forecasts disappointed investors. 12 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, May 4, 2012, 9:28 AM Cablevision (CVC) will join Comcast (CMCSA - previous) in offering a Netflix-like (NFLX) streaming service for its cable/broadband customers, predicts BTIG's Richard Greenfield. As evidence, he points to remarks made during Cablevision's earnings call about new software investments. Greenfield thinks Cablevision is worried about the Verizon/Coinstar JV, which is expected to have a beta launch this summer. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 6:34 PM Microsoft (MSFT) has added Seagate (STX) chairman/CEO Stephen Luczo as a board member. In addition, Virtual Instruments CEO John Thompson is replacing Netflix (NFLX) chief Reed Hastings on the compensation committee. Maybe this is why. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 6:02 PM Netflix (NFLX -7.6%) closed at levels last seen in early January after Viacom (VIA, VIAB) stated on its FQ2 earnings call Epix's movies will be available on Netflix "under any circumstance," but other streaming partners might also be added. Last week, it was reported Apple (AAPL) is talking to Epix, which Viacom co-owns with LGF and MGM, about a streaming deal. Netflix's exclusivity ends in September. 8 Comments [Tech, On the Move]

How does long NFLX, short AAPL sound? NFLX has a gap to fill around 95, AAPL filled its gap but charts say down it goes. - View all 10 replies

Canary Cash: I'm expecting NFLX to jump on either BS or a sale of DVDs, and I'm generally bearish on AAPL but I think it'll go up sans macro for a bit -
Ricardo Espinosa: After May exp next week (or earlier) I´ll reconsider this trade, capital is tied up right now, but going short NFLX at this level looks bad

Josh Krause: Strong rebound in NFLX. They might try to close it green or flat. If so, squeeze would likely follow. Agree? -
Josh Krause: Closing in on green. Going to be a massive hammer on the daily chart.
