- Friday, May 4, 2012, 9:28 AM Cablevision (CVC) will join Comcast (CMCSA - previous) in offering a Netflix-like (NFLX) streaming service for its cable/broadband customers, predicts BTIG's Richard Greenfield. As evidence, he points to remarks made during Cablevision's earnings call about new software investments. Greenfield thinks Cablevision is worried about the Verizon/Coinstar JV, which is expected to have a beta launch this summer. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 6:34 PM Microsoft (MSFT) has added Seagate (STX) chairman/CEO Stephen Luczo as a board member. In addition, Virtual Instruments CEO John Thompson is replacing Netflix (NFLX) chief Reed Hastings on the compensation committee. Maybe this is why. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 6:02 PM Netflix (NFLX -7.6%) closed at levels last seen in early January after Viacom (VIA, VIAB) stated on its FQ2 earnings call Epix's movies will be available on Netflix "under any circumstance," but other streaming partners might also be added. Last week, it was reported Apple (AAPL) is talking to Epix, which Viacom co-owns with LGF and MGM, about a streaming deal. Netflix's exclusivity ends in September. 8 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 4:00 PM Netflix (NFLX) and CBS have discussed reviving post-apocalyptic TV series Jericho, according to TV Guide, which adds talks are in preliminary stages. Netflix has already committed to reviving Arrested Development, and also plans to produce other original series'. Reviews for Netflix-developed Lilyhammer, which launched earlier this year, have been mixed. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 8:23 AM Netflix (NFLX) plans to resurrect Arrested Development for a 4th season after the showed hung in limbo for six years after season number three last aired. The company plans a different approach with the release of the original shows than other media channels typically provide, with all 10 episodes available for download at once. Shares of NFLX -1.0% premarket. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, April 27, 2012, 4:24 PM Apple (AAPL) recently began talks with premium TV channel Epix (owned by VIA, LGF, and MGM) over a deal to stream movies to Apple TV set-top boxes and a future TV set, Reuters reports. Netflix (NFLX) currently has exclusive rights to streaming Epix movies, but that deal ends in September, and a new one is expected to be costly. Apple previously was rumored to be interested in exclusive rights to the English Premier League. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 26, 2012, 8:43 PM Providence Equity Partners is selling its 10% stake in Hulu to co-owners Disney (DIS), Comcast (CMCSA), and News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) at a $2B valuation, Bloomberg reports. The valuation is just slightly above $1.9B offer Dish Network reportedly made for Hulu before last year's sales process was cancelled. Hulu's revenue rose 60% last year, but is still only a fraction of Netflix's (NFLX). 4 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 26, 2012, 12:22 PM Netflix's (NFLX -1.1%) streaming service cut into ratings for kids shows from Disney (DIS +1.1%) and Viacom (VIA -0.1%) in Q1, according to analysis from Sanford Bernstein. The two companies now face a bit of a conundrum - do they pull their premium kids programming off of Netflix and make the service less compelling or ring in the extra ~$75M in annual revenue the NFLX arrangement delivers? 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 7:16 PM Following its post-Q1 selloff, Nicholas Thompson asks if Netflix (NFLX -13.9%) is doomed. Unlike its DVD ops, Netflix's streaming business has low barriers to entry, he argues, and its original content is underwhelming. Felix Salmon disagrees Netflix has low barriers to entry, but thinks its content deals are a major problem. "Any time that Netflix builds up a profit margin, the studios will simply raise their prices until that margin disappears." (more) 5 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 1:04 PM Whitney Tilson tells CNBC he's adding to his Netflix (NFLX -13.4%) position following today's post-earnings dive. "When [a stock] gets cheaper and the story stays the same, we actually add to it," says Tilson, who was burned shorting Netflix but went long after it crashed into the 70s in October. Others clearly think Netflix's Q2 guidance and downbeat international outlook represent a story change. (more on NFLX) 9 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 10:46 AM Netflix (NFLX -13%) remains down sharply thanks to the tepid subscriber guidance accompanying its Q1 report. Stifel thinks the guidance raises questions about the size of Netflix's market. Morgan Stanley joins Citi in questioning Netflix's 2012 subscriber forecast, and declares LinkedIn a better buy. Needham reiterates an Underperform, but is pleased content spending growth is declining, and says an upgrade could follow the release of Netflix's 10-Q. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Monday, April 23, 2012, 7:09 PM Reed Hastings raises eyebrows once again during Netflix's Q1 earnings call (webcast), stating his company will try to emulate a cable network by emphasizing a small amount of exclusive content, rather than trying to build a broad library such as that offered by its DVD business. Hastings also says Netflix doesn't plan on offering tiered pricing over the near-term, but doesn't rule out the possibility over the long haul. NFLX -16.2% AH. (more) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 23, 2012, 5:36 PM Citi's Mark Mahaney notes Netflix's (NFLX) guidance for just 200K-800K Q2 domestic streaming net adds (blamed on "seasonality") falls below a Street estimate of 1.2M, and makes the company's guidance for 7M 2012 net adds look dubious. Also likely weighing on investors' minds is Reed Hastings' assertion (.pdf) that Netflix's Latin and U.K./Ireland ops will need more than 8 quarters to "reach sustained profits." NFLX -16.4% AH. Earnings call starts at 6PM ET (webcast). Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 23, 2012, 4:26 PM Netflix's Q2 guidance: The company sees domestic streaming subs rising to just 23.6M-24.2M in Q2, and international subs to just 3.45M-4M. DVD subs are seen falling to 8.95M-9.35M. Revenue of $873M-$895M is expected for Q2, below a consensus of $897.4M. EPS of -$0.10 to $0.14 is expected, above a consensus of -$0.17. NFLX -14.2% AH. (PR - PDF) (more) 3 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 23, 2012, 4:26 PM More on Netflix's (NFLX) Q1: The Q1 results aren't bad, but Q2 guidance is. Domestic streaming subs rose 1.7M Q/Q in Q1 to 23.4M (guidance was for 22.8M-23.6M), streaming margin up 220 bps to 13.2%. International subs rose 1.21M to 3.07M (2.5M-3.1M expected), business lost $103M. DVD subs fell 1.08M to 10.1M (1.2M-1.8M drop expected), margin fell 680 bps to 45.6%. Free cash flow was $2M.
