The social networking behemoth, which controls over a quarter of the web's referral traffic and roughly 1/6 of U.S. Internet usage, has provided a major traffic boost to video sites leveraging its Open Graph social sharing tools. In addition, Vevo has seen a 3x increase in daily registrations since requiring Facebook logins. - Friday, March 30, 2012, 2:05 PM Though Netflix (NFLX +0.9%) likes to downplay its DVD operations these days, it has acquired the DVD.com domain name, likely for a 7-figure sum. - Thursday, March 22, 2012, 5:56 PM U.S. consumers will watch 3.4B online videos involving paid content this year, and just 2.4B on physical media, estimates iSuppli. By contrast, 2011 saw 1.4B paid online views and 2.6B physical views. However, physical formats are expected to bring in $11.1B in revenue in 2012, far above the $1.7B brought in by paid online video. With Apple, the goal is creating highly polished products, whereas with Amazon, the goal is providing massive scale. For $2 customers can watch a standard-definition copy of a movie, while a high-definition version will run $5.
