- Tuesday, December 14, 2010, 10:37 AM Electronics retailers tumble after Best Buy's (BBY -15%) decline in Q3 profit, lower same-store sales and reduced guidance - despite rising Y/Y U.S. electronics sales and robust overall retail sales. RSH -4.4%, GME -2.4%. Popular products from the likes of Netflix (NFLX) and Apple (AAPL) may be reducing the need for flat-panel TVs, videogames and other retail staples. 1 Comment
- Tuesday, December 14, 2010, 10:25 AM Comcast (CMSCA +4.1%) is piloting a combined TV-web service that may let it block the cord-cutting threats from rivals like Google (GOOG) and Netflix (NFLX). The new service relies on a set-top box that mixes DVR and web capabilities and allows viewers to access on-demand content through their TVs. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 13, 2010, 3:57 PM Netflix (NFLX -5.7%) shares sink as Time Warner (TWX) CEO Jeff Bewkes labels it a small-time organization with a business model that can't work. More harmful is the growing sense that Netflix’s content costs are going up far faster than revenue growth, and those costs, which are amortized, will start to show up in the earnings results at some point. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, December 13, 2010, 9:02 AM A handful of high tech companies, including Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL), can breathe easier after a federal judge dismissed a patent lawsuit against them from Interval Licensing, a company controlled by Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen. On Friday, a judge ruled the suit's allegations weren't specific enough. But Interval says it will file an amended complaint. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 10, 2010, 5:10 PM The addition of companies such as Netflix (NFLX) and F5 Networks (FFIV) to the S&P 500 is a measure of the tech boom that's transforming the economy, but that's no reason for investors to rush out and buy them. Many tech stocks were added in the late 1990s only to be removed later. But all four S&P newcomers jumped today: NFLX +1.9%, FFIV +3%, CVC +4.1%, NFX +3.3%. 1 Comment

Premarket gainers: THC +52%. BEC +26%. MGH +12%. DRYS +5%. CVC +5%. IBN +5%. NFLX +4%. FFIV +4%.
Losers: GMCR -14%. FSYS -6%. NSM -5%. CYH -4%. CYS -4%. Comment! - Friday, December 10, 2010, 8:24 AM Premarket, Netflix (NFLX) is +4.2% after Thursday's news it will replace Office Depot (ODP) on the S&P 500. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, December 9, 2010, 7:44 PM S&P shuffles the 500 - promoting Netflix (NFLX), F5 Networks (FFIV) and Newfield Exploration (NFX) from the MidCap 400 into SPX, and pulling New York Times Co. (NYT), Office Depot (ODP) and Eastman Kodak (EK) to make room. Cablevision Systems (CVC) also joins the S&P 500 to replace King Pharmaceuticals (KG), which is being acquired by Pfizer (PFE). After hours: NFLX +5.3%, FFIV +5.2%, NFX +3.9%, CVC +5.3%. 4 Comments
- Thursday, December 9, 2010, 4:29 PM Akamai (AKAM) warned the pricing for content delivery services will fall "aggressively" ahead, but maintained its Q4 revenue estimate of from $272M to $285M. Some analysts want a stronger outlook so the shares can keep recent momentum and high valuation. Akamai closed at -2.9%. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 4:47 PM L.A.-based startup Prima Cinema (GE, BBY) will run new movies the day they hit theaters. The catch: the digital delivery system costs $20K and each film $500 - not quite Netflix's (NFLX) model. But this approach risks digital piracy, and so "makes very little sense as it risks millions to make pennies" says one critic. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 2:22 PM Exiting Netflix (NFLX -2%) CFO Barry McCarthy's comments at a Barclays conference are upbeat, but the effect on investors is unclear. He claims to leave a company that's in good shape, and is "not sure you’d want to be short this quarter." He also says Netflix is focusing on securing TV content - this morning's Disney (DIS) deal is evidence. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 11:21 AM Jefferies & Co. lowered its Netflix (NFLX -1.6%) rating to Hold from Buy, after the exit of company CFO Barry McCarthy. McCarthy leaves just as "virtually everybody is gunning" for Netflix, although CEO Reed Hastings remains "as the man behind the vision." In 2011, the DVD business will drop 18%, but a 33% jump in streaming subscribers will offset that. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 9:01 AM Netflix (NFLX) has inked a deal with Disney (DIS) to stream hundreds of TV episodes to its viewers as early as 15 days after their initial telecast. This is a coup for Netflix, which desperately needs content for its expanding streaming service. Premarket: Netflix is -2%. (PR) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 5:10 PM Netflix (NFLX) shares sink after-hours after longtime CFO Barry McCarthy says he's leaving the company "to pursue broader executive opportunities." McCarthy will be replaced by seven-year veteran David Wells. NFLX -3.4% AH. (PR) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 4:32 PM Comcast (CMCSA) has no plans to activate usage-based pricing for its web customers, says an executive. This is smart, as such a move would further inflame consumer rights advocates already opposed to Comcast's proposed buyout of NBC Universal (GE). 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 8:21 AM In a direct challenge to Netflix (NFLX), OnLive (T, TWX), a San Francisco video game service provider, will stream movie and TV shows. The company claims it's already in negotiations for content with major studios. Premarket, Netflix is +2% to $197.40. 3 Comments [Tech]

Bill Maurer: I love ISRG as a company, traded it several times. Problem is that they are at the upper end of range and usually trade down from here.
