- Monday, November 29, 2010, 10:41 AM Momentum stocks tend to fall hard and fast when an uptrend breaks, and Netflix (NFLX +2.9%), nearing a new all-time high, is a classic momentum stock susceptible to a big drop, Dian Chu says. Netflix faces huge competitors, and Chu believes it's just a matter of time before Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) or Google (GOOG) come up with some kind of rivaling technology and deployment network. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 22, 2010, 1:56 PM The real upside for Netflix (NFLX +7.8%) isn't its new $7.99/month streaming-only offering, but the simultaneous decision to raise prices by a buck (that's 11%) for customers who want DVDs too. Given the limited number of movies available to stream, it's a good bet most subscribers will cough up the small increase. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 22, 2010, 1:54 PM Google (GOOG -0.8%) wants the rights to Miramax's films to run them full length on YouTube, say sources. Broadcasters and cable firms are blocking their content from Google TV left and right, so this move may circumvent that problem, provided Netflix (NFLX) doesn't act first. In August, Disney (DIS) sold Miramax to Filmyard Holdings for $660M. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 22, 2010, 9:08 AM Netflix (NFLX) launches a U.S. subscription plan for streaming movies and TV shows over the internet for $7.99/month and raises the price of unlimited streaming and DVD by $1 to $9.99/month. The offer reflects success in Canada with a streaming-only plan at that price and the “tremendous customer value we’ve injected into streaming from Netflix," the company says. NFLX +4.9% premarket. Premarket gainers: ASX +18%. REGN +16%. STV +10%. GMCR +10%. NFLX +5%. CRUS +5%. CLDX +4%. ARNA +4%.
Losers: IRE -18%. AIB -11%. NBG -6%. MELA -4%. LYG -4%. STD -4%. ALU -4%. Comment! - Wednesday, November 17, 2010, 11:09 AM Online video company Hulu (GE, NWS) is cutting the price of its new subscription service from $9.99 to $7.99 to challenge Netflix (NFLX) and other providers. Sources say Hulu wants to raise up to $300M in an IPO to pay for more content. Besides GE and News Corp, investors include Walt Disney (DIS). 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 15, 2010, 3:21 PM The availability of online TV content isn't causing regular viewers to become "cord cutters," says a Nielsen survey. In fact, 84% of TV viewers who stream or download shows are "cord keepers," who maintain their typical scheduled broadcast watching habits. Knowing this, broadcasters might be open to greater partnerships with companies like Google (GOOG) and Netflix (NFLX). 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 15, 2010, 11:42 AM Comcast (CMCSA) is rolling out an iPad app (AAPL) that will let subscribers watch movies and TV shows on the device, as well as program DVRs and use it as a TV guide and channel changer. Meanwhile, the FCC is liable to impose conditions on the cableco's takeover of NBC Universal (GE) that would prevent it from withholding programming from Apple, Netflix (NFLX) and other competitors. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 15, 2010, 10:32 AM Oppenheimer is downgrading Akamai (AKAM -5.6%) from "Outperform" to "Perform" and removing the $58 per share price target. Analysts cite as the reason Akamai's loss of status as Netflix's (NFLX) primary content delivery network. They expect competition in the cloud to heat up and cut into Akamai's revenues through 2012. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 11, 2010, 10:34 AM Level 3 (LVLT) is +16.50 % after formally announcing it's becoming one of the primary content delivery networks to Netflix (NFLX), replacing Akamai (AKAM) -2.97%. Level 3 plans to double storage capacity to store the entire Netflix library. It also will increase the size of its data pipes to handle the 19M customers Netflix anticipates by year's end. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 10, 2010, 10:10 AM Dan Rayburn updates his Netflix-Akamai story with comments from both sides, and reports that Netflix (NFLX +1.4%) insiders say Akamai (AKAM +0.8%) "has not always performed well" in head-to-head tests with Limelight (LLNW +4.1%) and Level 3 (LVLT -3.8%). Meanwhile, Level 3 goes on record saying it has secured a multi-year deal with Netflix. Comment!
- Wednesday, November 10, 2010, 9:34 AM Akamai (AKAM) is down 0.5% despite efforts to downplay reports Netflix (NFLX) will shift its video traffic to rivals Limelight (LLNW) and Level 3 (LVLT). Netflix insiders say Akamai has not always performed well during testing. Akamai says, however, "it's no secret that Netflix has a multiple vendor strategy for its video service." Premarket, Limelight is up +4.9% and Level 3 is down -0.9%. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 1:55 PM Akamai (AKAM -5%) says Netflix (NFLX +1%) is still a customer and expects to remain so into next year, and denies any "performance issues" regarding the use of its content delivery network by Netflix. No effect on Akamai's stock price, however, or on Limelight Networks (LLNW +20.1%) and Level 3 (LVLT +18.2%), who are reportedly taking over from Akamai as CDN providers for Netflix. 1 Comment
- Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 9:44 AM Shares of Limelight Networks (LLNW +30.1%) and Level 3 (LVLT +14.1%) surge on a report that the two companies are in the process of taking over from Akamai (AKAM -4.3%) as providers of content delivery network services for Netflix (NFLX +1.9%) due to "poor performance issues." Comment!
- Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 8:57 AM Akamai (AKAM) will lose Netflix (NFLX) as a key content delivery customer due to performance problems. Akamai took Netflix's business away from Level 3 (LVLT) earlier this year and ran at least half its traffic. Netflix will return to Level 3 and Limelight (LLNW). Akamai is down in premarket trading -3.6%. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, October 29, 2010, 3:55 PM Netflix (NFLX -1.4%) should trade at 20x earnings, not 67x earnings, T2's Whitney Tilson says in explaining his short position in the stock. It's a good business, he says, but will need to "really pay up for streaming content." Open Table (OPEN -1.8%) is another favorite short, whose "fair value is well south of 50-60% decline from here." 7 Comments

Another NFLX fake rise because Reed bought $1 million in shares. Nope, not in NFLX, but in FB. So yeah, what does that tell you. - View all 1 replies

I am upset that HFT drive prices of stocks such as NFLX to irrational heights. Then it is those left holding the bag that incur the losses. - View all 0 replies

Some people don't realize it, but the huge run ups and subsequent crashes of stocks like NFLX make many distrust the market. Rightly. - View all 3 replies

On NFLX, bought $150 put and $90 call weeklies in NFLX with 130/100 put bias. Look to close puts around $79-$80 tomm and let OTM calls run. - View all 9 replies

Brian Benda: At this point, I doubt it. I posted this when stock was trading at $85 in after-hours session. It has since sliced much lower. -
Brian Benda: This stock looks like it will trade below $70 now before it ever gets back to $90-100, if it ever gets there. Stock is in meltdown mode now.

I've been following NFLX earnings debacle- I see not 1 person bullish on this name. Does that make it a bounce contender? - View all 1 replies

campusglass: I could see it bouncing today, even 10%. It got killed in AH.....maybe a bit too much. But i'm still not a buyer lol

Does the death of NFLX mean the death of their obnoxious pop-up ads? If pay-movies doesn't work, why should Pay-radio? Are you Sirius? :) - View all 1 replies
