- Friday, October 29, 2010, 3:55 PM Netflix (NFLX -1.4%) should trade at 20x earnings, not 67x earnings, T2's Whitney Tilson says in explaining his short position in the stock. It's a good business, he says, but will need to "really pay up for streaming content." Open Table (OPEN -1.8%) is another favorite short, whose "fair value is well south of 50-60% decline from here." 7 Comments
- Friday, October 29, 2010, 10:36 AM Investors have two reasons to be excited about Coinstar (CSTR +21.9%): Q3 results that whipped analysts' estimates, and its plans to take on Netflix (NFLX -1%) in web-based movie distribution. LA Times reports that the parent of Redbox video rental kiosks plans to offer a monthly subscription plan similar to the one Netflix uses. Comment!
- Tuesday, October 26, 2010, 2:35 PM Apple (AAPL -0.2%) for Sony (SNE +0.7%) may not make much sense, but Apple for Netflix (NFLX +7%) might be interesting, Gleacher analyst Brian Marshall tells CNBC. "Apple wants to be the first company to integrate the home office and living room. And what’s limiting them is content and better broadband into the home." 10 Comments
- Friday, October 22, 2010, 1:52 PM Some analysts think Amazon (AMZN +2.4%) could be getting close to launching a subscription-based streaming video service to compete with Netflix (NFLX -2%), and CFO Tom Szkutak doesn't quite deny it: “It’s certainly an area [with] room for a lot of innovation. And we’ve got a great team in place that’s working on that.” 2 Comments
- Friday, October 22, 2010, 9:36 AM Netflix's (NFLX -3.3%) long outage yesterday may have exposed just how vulnerable it is, Zero Hedge says in floating the idea of a follow-on stock offering. Its streaming service has become the largest source of U.S. internet traffic during peak evening hours, more than double the volume at YouTube (GOOG), yet it is supported by $120M in PP&E vs. Google's $5B. Comment!
- Thursday, October 21, 2010, 1:31 PM DVD purchases in the U.S. fell 16% in the first nine months of the year, a nod to the shifting movie-watching economy - including the success of streamers like Netflix (NFLX), up 211% YTD. Overall, rental spending fell 5.4%, but rentals from kiosks such as Redbox (CSTR) gained 44%. Comment!

Premarket gainers: WSTL +20%. XING +14%. NFLX +11%. PTEC +9%. EBAY +8%. MNTA +7%. ABK +6%. ALXN +5%. CTIC +5%. IRE +4%. AVII +4%. NOK +4%.
Losers: CRME -25%. CRUS -12%. PLCE -12%. SHZ -8%. MLNX -5%. ADS -5%. REE -4%. CYS -4%. Comment! - Wednesday, October 20, 2010, 4:18 PM Netflix (NFLX): Q3 EPS of $0.70 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $553M vs. $551M. Shares +7.2% AH. (PR) 5 Comments
- Wednesday, October 20, 2010, 10:40 AM Apple's (AAPL -0.2%) newly declared interest in using its cash for “strategic opportunities” begins a parlor game of what its $50B cash hoard might buy. Kaufman analyst Shawn Wu tosses out Electronic Arts (ERTS -1.3%), Netflix (NFLX +0.6%) and - most intriguing of all - Facebook. But Apple might be better served by prudent acquisitions that boost its mobile products. 2 Comments
- Wednesday, October 20, 2010, 12:10 AM Notable earnings after Wednesday's close: AMLN, ETFC, EBAY, ESV, FNF, ISIL, LRCX, NFLX, NFX, NE, RHI, STX, TEX, TSS, XLNX Comment!
- Monday, October 11, 2010, 1:49 PM "Category killers" were supposed to glide online and leverage brands into "clicks and mortar" success, but Blockbuster's just the latest example of physical chains' struggles. Unlike Sears (SHLD) - which had decades to rest on mail-order laurels - Netflix (NFLX) will have to stay nimble as its market moves to streaming video. Comment!
- Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 1:19 PM Netflix (NFLX -4.8%) adds another studio in its quiet but steady transition toward streaming, reaching a pact with Sony (SNE) that has a now-typical trade-off: Netflix agrees not to rent Sony movies for 28 days after they go on sale, and gets reduced fees when it can rent, and more movies for the streaming service. - Monday, September 27, 2010, 10:20 AM Netflix (NFLX +1%) shares bounce back from early weakness attributed to a NY Times story regarding new competition from the likes of Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOG). The next war will not be won by the company that perfects the logistics of moving DVDs, it says, but by whoever can best negotiate with Hollywood studios. Comment!
- Friday, September 24, 2010, 8:54 AM Netflix (NFLX) CEO Reed Hastings apologizes for putting his "Big American Foot" in his mouth for saying "self-absorbed" Americans wouldn't notice that Canada was getting a $7.99/month streaming-only option not available in the U.S. Remember, though, that streaming currently offers only 20% of the movies available by DVD. 1 Comment
- Monday, September 13, 2010, 2:36 PM On Henry Blodget's list of potential tech takeovers: Travelzoo (TZOO), Comscore (SCOR), Shutterfly (SFLY), Blue Nile (NILE), Akamai (AKAM), ARM Holdings (ARMH), Netflix (NFLX), Salesforce.com (CRM), Research In Motion (RIMM). Comment!
- Wednesday, September 1, 2010, 4:37 PM From the geek squad at TechCrunch, the verdict on Apple's (AAPL) new toys: "Everything is great in the land of Apple gadgets" - especially the new iPod touch - but the "closed-minded" Apple TV is little more than a "Netflix (NFLX) streaming box." 5 Comments

#netflix amazingly bought back $40MM of stock during Q3; Hastings alone sold $15MM of $NFLX during the quarter; 5K every week. - View all 2 replies

$NFLX new mkt announcement far earlier than actual launch date- grasp at focusing attention from crummy qtr & slowing markets elsewhere? - View all 2 replies

Liqddynamite: It also begs the question, why not UK and Ireland before LA? Wouldn't the english speaking countries make sense to go to first? -
Andrew Shapiro: $AMZN- Lovefilm are in UK. @ $300/share perhaps $NFLX didn't want the fight @ $100/share don't care; alternatively now desperate

O. Young Kwon: It's risky, but it has TMs on one-month term because it is relatively well hoding in the current market. yk
