- Wednesday, March 13, 9:17 AM Netflix (NFLX) announces that users can link their Facebook account with its service starting today. The new integration will allow Netflix members to see what friends are watching with an opt-in feature. NFLX +2.4% premarket. 4 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, March 11, 1:15 PM In addition to disclosing Redbox Instant wants in on the original programming craze, CAA lawyer Peter Micelli indicates House of Cards didn't come cheap for Netflix (NFLX -1.8%). "House of Cards' started at $4.5 million [per episode] and [executive producer David] Fincher took it way above that." The first season of House of Cards features 13 episodes, and Netflix has already committed to a second. Meanwhile, the NY Post reports Coinstar's (CSTR +2.1%) recent $350M debt offering will be used to finance buybacks, and thus help keep activist investors at bay. 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, March 11, 10:04 AM Netflix (NFLX -1.4%) slips with rumors of new original content from streaming rivals sitting in the background. The move could be overblown given the company is an early adopter on programming and has a well-received hit on its hands with House of Cards. On the other hand, with shares up 97% YTD, the need to blow off a little steam isn't unfathomable. 3 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 7:59 AM Redbox (CSTR) and Verizon (VZ) could be looking to break into original programming. At a recent tech symposium, a Creative Artists Agency lawyer tipped off that the companies have been inquiring about programming opportunities. If the report pans out, it makes for beefier streaming competition for Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN). 2 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, March 7, 8:13 AM A couple of Wellesley professors say their research shows the closing of major online piracy websites added 6% to 10% to online revenue for movie studios - a mark that is higher than what analysts factored in for the effect. Though it's major studios such as Sony (SNE), Disney (DIS), Viacom (VIAB), and Lions Gate (LGF) which have done most of the heavy lifting in the anti-piracy fight - the trend toward legitimate movie viewing isn't half-bad for Coinstar (CSTR) or Netflix (NFLX) either. 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 5, 10:18 AM RBC Capital initiates coverage on Netflix (NFLX) with an Outperform rating, not shying away from valuation despite the company's +90% YTD run. As usual, the debate on NFLX is lively as ever with every headline that screams House of Cards is the "turning point" in the history of TV getting met with counter-arguments (I, II) suggesting a $200 stock price could be a house of cards. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 9:21 AM Good and bad news for BlackBerry (BBRY): The good: The German government is giving BB10 a thumbs-up, approving a deal to buy 5K Z10s equipped with Secusmart encryption tech for employee use. The bad: Netflix (NFLX) says it has no plans to develop a BB10 app. WhatsApp made a similar announcement in December, but recently changed its mind. (DoD policy change) 37 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 4, 12:23 PM A downturn in shares of Netflix (NFLX -5.5%) kickstarts rumors that Carl Icahn is taking some profits off the table. With Netflix up 92% YTD, the activist investor might not be the only one rebalancing a portfolio. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, March 1, 6:52 AM Another content play the Netflix (NFLX): The company says it will have exclusive streaming rights for The Hunger Games beginning on March 3 in the U.K. and Ireland followed by the U.S. sometime after. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, February 25, 3:19 PM Netflix (NFLX +1.2%) at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecommunication Conference: 1) CEO Reed Hastings maintains that the success of House of Cards is confirmation that the firm can build out some of its own content. 2) Data mining will help the company invest in content with profit potential. 3) Once again, Hastings takes a shot at HBO as he reiterates that Netflix will become HBO long before HBO becomes Netflix. 4) The presence of Hulu and Amazon Prime has helped shore up the overall relationship between content providers and the streaming companies. (webcast) 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, February 25, 10:33 AM The Netflix (NFLX +1.9%) advantage: The company is using its treasure trove of internal consumer data to tailor its advertising and promotions to consumer preferences. For House of Cards, users see different trailers for the series depending upon the likelihood that they are a fan of Kevin Space, Robyn Wright, or director David Fincher. While the company's algorithm has been touted in the past as cutting edge, with original content now a focus, it may be more crucial than ever. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, February 22, 10:07 AM Netflix's (NFLX -3.1%) Q1 sales are tracking to $870M-$875M, slightly below a consensus of $877M, says ITG Research; the firm adds the positive reception to House of Cards could lead trends to improve. ITG's comments are producing a moderate selloff in Netflix, which remains up over 3x since October. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 19, 12:07 PM A survey by investment firm Cowen shows that the expensive bet on original programming by Netflix (NFLX +2.3%) just might pay off for the company. Of those subscribers polled, 86% said they were less likely to cancel with the new drama House of Cards on Netflix's slate of programming. Also of interest on the Netflix model, 90% of respondents said they like having the ability to watch all the episodes at once. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 13, 8:46 AM Shares of Netflix (NFLX) have more room to run, according to JPMorgan. The firm takes its price target up to $206 from $180 and backs the Overweight rating on the stock it has lined up. NFLX +1.7% premarket to $181.01. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 13, 6:40 AM Netflix (NFLX) Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says House of Cards is its top-rated show but falls short of giving any numbers for analysts to chew on. A high percentage of viewers watched multiple episodes of the show in a short time frame, according to the exec. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 12, 9:29 AM News of a fresh original content series on Netflix (NFLX) is good enough to help drive up shares 2.1% in premarket action. The quick analyst take: After striking an expensive content deal with Disney for movies and TV shows, the family-focused stable of content at Netflix will now be strong enough to draw in a new demographic of subscribers and could help its churn rate. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]

gsterling: I don't think it's really a big deal. Most people can do fine without a drink. Ryanair charges fees for everything and people accept it. -
Andrew Shapiro: read the$rjet rules and tiers for each of the different charges to be appied depending on where you bought your ticket- thats the point.
