- Friday, February 8, 8:38 AM Coinstar (CSTR) is losing even more market share to Netflix (NFLX) than what has been previously forecast is the logical conclusion that comes from taking in the quarterly reports (CSTR, NFLX) of both companies, according to JPMorgan's Paul Coster. The company is still banking on its video streaming service - currently in a beta - to swing the momentum back in its direction, but the clock is ticking. CSTR -7.6% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 7, 7:41 AM Netflix (NFLX) is out with an e-mail to former subscribers with a new 1-month free trial offer which can be canceled online at anytime. What to watch: With anecdotal evidence suggesting the free trial is widely popular with the college-aged population, the company's churn rate compared to subscriber count will continue to be analyzed. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 6, 6:15 PM Netflix (NFLX +5.7%) continued its winter to remember today, possibly aided by favorable comments from Disney (DIS) CEO Bob Iger during the media giant's FQ1 earnings call. When asked about the impact Disney's movie deal with Netflix could have on Disney Channel viewing and pay-TV relationships, Iger stated Disney "thought long and hard" about the impact, and concluded the deal was a "movie play" that wouldn't hurt Disney Channel. Also: Time Warner (TWX) CEO Jeff Bewkes offered Netflix (both a customer and rival) guarded praise during TWX's earnings call. (earlier) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 6, 11:02 AM HBO (TWX +4.7%) vs. Netflix (NFLX +4.1%): Is streaming killing the pay-TV business model? Last year, HBO added 1.9M subscribers - just slightly below the 2M streaming customers Netflix brought into the fold. All told, several years into the Netflix threat, HBO still has 114M global subscribers, a mark that "dwarfs" its rival. (H/T media reporter Julia Boorstin) 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 5, 2:51 PM Coinstar (CSTR +2.3%) and Verizon's (VZ +0.2%) Redbox Instant streaming JV has struck a deal with Microsoft (MSFT +0.5%) to make the Xbox 360 the JV's exclusive console platform. Redbox Instant, whose launch has been delayed from Q4 '12 to the end of Q1, will presumably get some free marketing as part of the deal. Netflix (NFLX -0.7%) is available on all three major home console platforms. 6 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 5, 12:56 PM Netflix (NFLX -1%) is in line for inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 Index with Dell set to go private. The company is currently the largest in the Nasdaq-Q50 Index, which serves as the waiting room for the Nasdaq 100. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 5, 9:42 AM After crunching the numbers on broadband usage during the weekend, it appears Netflix's (NFLX -1.2%) House of Cards series drew a strong response from its streaming audience. On at least one network, a quarter of all viewers powered through the entire 13 episodes over the weekend. If the binge-viewing trend holds, it could have a major impact on the streaming model. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, February 4, 5:57 PM Netflix (NFLX +6%) steadily rallied today as investors continue piling in following a blockbuster Q4 report and a positive reception to House of Cards. BMO raised its PT to $165 from $135, albeit while reiterating a Market Perform (the old target would've made Netflix a screaming buy 2 weeks ago). Meanwhile, The Atlantic's Rebecca Greenfield estimates Netflix will need to add 520.8K subs over the next 2 years on account of House of Cards to break even, and that HBO's track record suggests Netflix has a shot. (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, February 4, 1:09 PM Venture capitalist Fred Wilson thinks that HBO (TWX -1.2%) might follow the Netflix business model if it sees Netflix (NFLX +4%) have rousing success with original programming such as House of Cards. Though HBO already has a direct streaming service set up Scandinavia, a shift in U.S. strategy would be a major event. There doesn't appear to be any confusion over the master plan over at Netflix. Chief Content Office Ted Sarandos says,"the goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us." 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, February 1, 1:56 PM On a day when Netflix (NFLX +1.4%) is premiering House of Cards to positive reviews, Amazon (AMZN +0.1%) announces it has scored exclusive streaming rights for Downton Abbey. Amazon's home page is currently sharing the news to customers in a rather conspicuous way. The e-commerce giant has been steadily growing (I, II) its arsenal of exclusive TV content. (children's show pilots) 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, February 1, 10:42 AM Netflix (NFLX +2.9%) trades higher as the first season of David Fincher's House of Cards (all 13 episodes) premieres on its site and apps to largely favorable reviews. In an effort to stoke interest, Netflix is making the first episode available for free to non-subscribers for a month. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Thursday, January 31, 6:45 PM Bespoke's list of the S&P's most overbought stocks, based on the number of standard deviations each are trading above their respective 50-day moving averages, is noteworthy for its lack of high-fliers and its plethora of energy names: CHK, DVN, VLO, HES, PSX and MPC comprise six of the top eight. The others are PG and NFLX. 6 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, January 30, 2:18 PM Netflix (NFLX +0.8%) is looking to produce at least 5 original shows per year, content chief Ted Sarandos tells GQ. He adds Netflix is trying to woo Warren Beatty and Jodie Foster for future projects, and that the company's goal "is to become HBO (TWX) faster than HBO can become us" - Reed Hastings has declared HBO Go, rather than Amazon, YouTube, or Hulu, to be Netflix's biggest rival. The comments come ahead of the Friday launch of House of Cards, which has received some favorable early ink. (debt offering) 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 30, 7:01 AM Netflix (NFLX) prices its $500M offering of senior notes due 2021 with a 5.375% coupon rate. Some analysts on the Street are issuing cautious comments on Netflix's cash flow situation due to the bond play as the company's content costs continue to increase. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 29, 9:48 AM Netflix (NFLX -1.4%) trades lower after announcing it will float $400M in senior notes to help it pay off higher-paying debt and keep a little on the side. Though the consensus on the Street is that the company's well-telegraphed move will be used in part to help it fund the development of more original content, it has also given NFLX bears something solid to latch on to. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 8:04 AM Netflix (NFLX) announces a $400M offering of senior notes. The company says its will use close to $225M of the net proceeds from the offering to redeem outstanding 8.50% senior notes with the rest going toward general corporate purposes. Comment! [Consumer]
