- Tuesday, June 18, 6:46 AM Netflix (NFLX) announces the launch of Netflix Families in the U.K. as it increases its push to land new family-oriented viewers. The online interface will include a curated list of available family programming. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, June 17, 2:39 PM Out with the old. The Netflix-DreamWorks Animation deal signals an important change in the way content is distributed, according to industry watchers The most important part of the deal is that it focus on exclusive fresh content for Netflix (NFLX +6.8%) from DreamWorks (DWA +4%) - instead of just filling up a library with older titles. The big picture: A bidding war for new films from Hollywood studios (LGF, SNE, VIA, CMCSA, DIS) could help the industry maximize profits. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg called it (I, II) last week when they predicted giant upheaval for the film industry. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, June 17, 9:52 AM Netflix (NFLX +5.1%) roars 6% higher after news of a content deal with DreamWorks Animation breaks. Though the partnership will significantly strengthen the company's menu of children's programming including the rights to air Shrek and Kung Fu Panda series, with financial terms undisclosed there is a wildcard in the mix. 7 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: OSH +47%. FRO +21%. KNDI +16%. LDK +8%. MNKD +5%. AMD +5%. DVAX +5%. NFLX +5%.
Losers: FOLD -29%. TEX -14%. MDVN -7%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, June 17, 7:37 AM More on the Netflix (NFLX) - Dreamworks Animation deal: The partnership between the two media players calls for 300 hours of original programming and appears to be a deeper commitment by Netlflix toward children's programming. Though Netflix let a deal for content from Viacom's Nickolodean expire early this year, it now has Dreamworks and Disney (starting in 2016) supplying it with content for kids. Financial terms weren't disclosed. NFLX +1.4% premarket 11 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, June 17, 6:41 AM Netflix (NFLX) signs a multi-year deal with DreamWorks Animation (DWA) for new original series to air on the streaming service. The new shows will include characters inspired by Dreamworks Animation's franchises. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 12, 12:46 PM Netflix (NFLX -2.1%) will add support for multiple user profiles per account this summer, says exec Todd Yellin; on top of separate queues, each profile will be given different personalized recommendations based on viewing activity. The feature's arrival dovetails with the launch of an $11.99/month family plan for subscribers wanting simultaneous access to 4 streams (regular accounts support 2). 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 12, 9:51 AM The number of households with pay-TV is forecast to rise to 1B homes globally by 2018 led by growth in China and India, according to Digital TV Research. Though it's tricky separating the potential winners from losers in the sector (DTV, DISH, TWX, NFLX), the PowerShares Dynamic Media ETF (PBS) is something of a catch-all for the trend toward growth in the media industry. Top holdings: Dish 5.13%; Disney 5.11%; Google 5.10%; DirecTV 5.07%. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 10, 12:16 PM Carl Icahn and Reed Hastings have had nothing but nice things to say about each other with shares of Netflix (NFLX +0.2%) on their prolonged tear, so it's a bit of an oddity that the voting results from last week's shareholder meeting showed some discord over the company's slate of board nominees. Two Netflix directors were elected with an unimpressive 52% of the vote, while a third was actually under the 50% mark. If Icahn isn't a bit snappy over the Netflix board, then who is? 3 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 9:54 AM An ITC administrative law judge rules Netflix (NFLX) and Roku don't infringe a Rovi (ROVI -6.6%) patent related to parental control for TV UIs; Rovi, which is likely to appeal, is diving after making fresh 52-week highs on Friday. B. Riley has cut Rovi to Neutral, stating it's "now somewhat less optimistic about Rovi’s chances of prevailing." The firm thinks deals with Netflix and Roku could respectively yield $90M/year and $10M-$20M/year in licensing fees over the next 3-5 years. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, June 7, 6:49 PM "Netflix (NFLX) has exploded the old broadcast television format," says Tero Kuittinen, discussing the implications of Arrested Development's use of a unique/complex episode structure. "Entire 10-episode cycles can be created in a way that makes them far more elaborate and tightly plotted than anything network television can handle." There could also be implications here for Amazon. Though reviews weren't great, one study pegged AD's opening weekend viewing at 3x that of the acclaimed House of Cards. Also: NPD estimates Netflix had an 89% share of Q1 U.S. subscription TV show streaming activity; Hulu had 10%, and Amazon Prime (AMZN) just 2%. 10 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 6, 2:47 PM Redbox Instant (CSTR, VZ) will be available soon to Roku users as the companies look to expand access to their streaming service. It's the second major deal of the week in the streaming space appearing like it could put some pressure on Netflix (NFLX -3.4%) and Hulu after Amazon landed a plush content arrangement with Viacom earlier. 4 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 5:19 PM Amazon (AMZN) paid $200M+ for its Viacom (VIA) streaming deal, Reuters reports. The news service adds the deal will run for more than two years and features "a deeper library of content" than what Viacom provided Netflix (NFLX). The deal is said to be Amazon's largest ever, though it should be noted the Epix deal's price tag could grow thanks to milestone payments. Regardless, Reuters' figure backs up Reed Hastings' April remarks about Amazon and Hulu "bidding more aggressively" for content. Netflix's Q1 EPS beat had much to do with margin improvements stemming from slowing content cost growth (liabilities up only $100M Q/Q to $5.7B). 6 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 4, 9:30 AM Amazon (AMZN) scores a multi-year deal with Viacom (VIA) for many of the TV shows Netflix (NFLX -1.2%) lost last month, and boasts some of the content will be exclusive. "Hundreds of TV shows and thousands of TV episodes" from Viacom, including popular kids' shows such as Dora the Explorer, Blues Clues, and Spongebob Squarepants, are being added to Prime Instant Video, with British/German Lovefilm subs getting access to some of them this summer. Some of the content will also be added to the kids-specific Kindle FreeTime Unlimited service. (Amazon/Epix deal) (Downton Abbey exclusive) (original shows) 13 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, June 3, 12:34 PM Netflix (NFLX -3.4%) is seeing more profit-taking on a down day for tech. Over the weekend, SA contributor Money Investor noted the valuations being thrown around for Hulu (Bloomberg has reported of $1B+ offers) imply a major price/sales discount relative to Netflix's current valuation of 2.8x 2013E sales. One could also point out they appear to be below the $2B valuation Providence Equity obtained last fall for its 10% Hulu stake. On the other hand, Netflix has been soundly outgrowing Hulu, and its paid subscriber base is now bigger than Hulu's estimated total viewer base. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, May 31, 8:16 AM Curb your enthusiasm. That's the advice from Schaeffer's Investment Research to traders giddy over Netflix's (NFLX) inclusion in the Nasdaq 100. The track record for companies tagged for the index is spotty and Netflix's own history suggests it does just well as from the outside looking in. NFLX +1.1% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, Tech, On the Move]

$NFLX watched two episodes of Arrested Development Season 4, pretty dissappointing, strong deviation from the first three seasons.... - View all 7 replies

James Sands: I think ESPN could get triple/sub streaming versus cable or satellite. Similar I think Discovery's content could get more/sub streamed. -
James Sands: Then again, the current structure is beneficial so who knows what will happen.

James Sands: I still think Hulu's model is better. Netflix will need to develop advertising within their model sooner or later.

J Mintzmyer: Why would anybody buy that? Beyond me... On a side note, $AMZN also made a content gain for Prime. Gloves still haven't came off yet...
