- Tuesday, June 18, 11:50 AM Newfield Exploration (NFX +3.6%) is upgraded to Buy from Hold with a $29 price target at Stifel Nicolaus, which cites an upcoming increased proved NAV from expected ~$1.15B in H2 international asset sales, upside to 2013 guidance (possibly with Q2 results), and delivery of growth showing up from its domestic core areas. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 24, 11:35 AM Newfield Exploration (NFX +8.4%) rallies after reporting Q1 results that beat estimates, and net production of 11.7M boe was at the high end of forecasts. Domestic liquids production rose 9% Q/Q, and NFX expects another 12% gain in Q2. The results highlight that management is "off to a good start operationally" in 2013, which should begin reverse the stock's 20% YTD slide. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 23, 5:06 PM Newfield Exploration (NFX): Q1 EPS of $0.45 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $651M beats by $3.27M. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Friday, April 5, 11:51 AM A buyer's market in oil and gas assets means companies relying on asset sales to strengthen their balance sheets may have to sell more than they intended or take on expensive financing, Jefferies' analysts say. Among those most exposed to the weakness due to funding shortfalls or levered balance sheets: CHK, FST, NFX, SFY, XCO. 3 Comments [Energy]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, April 2, 5:01 PM Newfield Exploration (NFX) +4.2% AH after announcing a significant discovery offshore Malaysia, where a well encountered 1,585 ft. of net natural gas pay and a stem test confirmed commerciality of the reservoir. It's "the largest conventional exploratory success Newfield has made in its 25-year history," CEO Lee Boothby says. 2 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 20, 3:28 PM Newfield Exploration (NFX -8.9%) slides sharply after reporting a massive Q4 loss driven by a $1.5B non-cash ceiling test writedown associated with the carrying value of its domestic proved reserves. Analysts at Jefferies note adjusted EPS were well below analyst views, and cite higher depreciation, depletion and amortization as the cause. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]

- Thursday, February 14, 8:39 AM Newfield Exploration (NFX) says it will seek strategic alternatives for its international oil and gas holdings, and forecasts a Q4 loss of ~$1.2B from a $1.5B writedown due to low natural gas prices and the sale of some assets. NFX also will take a Q4 non-cash charge of ~$550M for deferred income taxes. Plans 2013 capex budget of $1.7B-$1.9B; sees production of 44M-47M boe vs. 47M in 2012. Shares +3.7% premarket. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 11:24 AM Newfield Exploration (NFX -1.2%) plugged an out-of-control well in the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota yesterday, after the well began blowing a geyser of oil, gas and salt water Dec. 21. The well had been releasing an estimated 106 barrels of crude, 166,000 cubic feet of natural gas and 80 barrels of salt water per hour. Comment! [Energy]

Hysterical (if not entirely unjustified) distrust of management and big Bakken holdings... Textbook value investment. Long $NFX. - View all 3 replies

bourgeois_badboy: Agree. But buying at 3+ yr lows I'd rather trace it to fixable managerial blunders than apocalyptic longterm. Gotta be SOME catch at this $. -

Maybe a wild day for $NFX, $4B MktCap $NFX forced to write off $2B of CEO Boothby's errors, but good news otherwise. - View all 0 replies

$NFX releases generally postive report. Plans to double liquids production in two years and perhaps sell its smallish foreign operations. - View all 1 replies

daveog: International is not small...could get $3B for it, but who knows. The gas write down could offset any tax gain on International sale...

daveog: Longer term, I could not agree more about NFX. Short term, NFX look incredibly weak...I'm afraid $20 is coming toward YE.

Bob de'Long: About 40th round that I still own! And I'v bought and sold perhaps another 100 rounds. Conviction or stubborness? I do like NFX.
