- Friday, May 24, 12:38 PM Heard during Foot Locker's (FL -6.1%) earnings call: 1) Execs say products are "right" at Foot Locker stores, but due to weather patterns more sales will shift to Q2 from Q1. 2) In Q1, traffic was down, but ASPs were higher. 3) The planned acquisition of Runners Point Group appears to be a bet on Germany - not the continent as a whole. 4) The retailer says comparable store sales are flat this month. That's not great news for Nike (NKE -1.4%), Under Armour (UA -1.3%), or Finish Line (FINL -2.2%) - unless the catch-up that Foot Locker points to materializes. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Friday, May 24, 8:31 AM Shares of Foot Locker (FL) slip 2.2% premarket after the retailer's Q1 earnings came in just ahead of estimates but it didn't give investors any meaty guidance to bite on. The quarter from Foot Locker doesn't appear to raise any alarm bells for Nike (NKE) or Under Armour (UA), although the firm's conference call could tip off some buying trends for the athletic apparel sector. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 21, 2:59 PM Battle back on: 19 retailers say they will opt out of a $7.25B settlement with Visa (V +0.2%) and MasterCard (MA +0.7%) over interchange fees and will consider additional legal action against the companies. The highly-anticipated move from the heavyweight retailers (WMT, GPS, COST, NKE) comes about a week before a court deadline in the case. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, May 20, 8:29 AM The flood of tourists into Hong Kong from Mainland China looks promising to global retailers setting up shop in the region, although the tilt towards more bargain shopping could be a trend to watch for high-end sellers. Outlet malls have seen the biggest gains in traffic and sales in Hong Kong which sets up nicely for retailers that planned a strategy which pivots on squeezing profits from the channel. Hong-Kong watching: Nike (NKE), Limited Brands (LTD), Gucci (GUCG.PK), Prada, Louis Vuitton (LVMUY.PK), Coach (COH), Ralph Lauren (RL), Michael Kors (KORS), Swatch (SWGAY.PK), Burberry (BURBY.PK), and Tiffany (TIF). Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 14, 8:17 AM Puma (PMMAF.PK) warns sales could fall 1% to 5% in 2013 after the retailer saw Q1 come in below expectations. The company says it will make a clean break from the strategy of its former CEO of 18 years as a focus on fashionable lifestyle products sputtered in Europe and China. Analysts don't think the weakness at Puma is a stark warning sign for Nike (NKE) or Adidas (ADDYY.PK). Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Monday, May 13, 5:08 PM NIKE, Inc. (NKE) declares $0.21/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.30%. For shareholders of record June 3. Payable July 1. Ex-div date May 30. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, May 8, 3:00 PM A devastating fire in Bangladesh at an apparel factory has added a sense of urgency to a push in the retail world to disclose where and how products are made. The move isn't purely based on altruism, surveys show consumers will pay more for clothes with signs on fair-labor practices. Nordstrom (JWN +0.2%) is considering starting to promote clothes made in humane working conditions - while Nike (NKE) and Wal-Mart (WMT -0.7%) plan to take on tired accusations of sweat-shop tactics with more disclosures. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Saturday, May 4, 9:25 AM Nike (NKE) may be looking for a chance to rethink the sports stars it sponsors after the likes of Lance Armstrong, Oscar Pistorius and others, and it may have just the guy: Jason Collins, who already has a Nike deal - which soon could become a lot bigger. Coming out of the closet may take Collins from bench-warmer to the potential face of a major company, consultants say. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, May 3, 2:49 PM Athletic shoes in focus: Analysts think the strong quarter in North America by Adidas (PMMAF.PK) confirms that demand for athletic shoes is outpacing other retail categories. Nike (NKE +2%), Foot Locker (FL +0.9%), and Finish Line (FINL +3.1%) could surprise to the upside as new lines sell well and a shift in the product mix toward higher-margin basketball shoes helps boosts results - while don't count out Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS +2%) and Under Armour (UA +0.9%) to also catch some of the action. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 3, 7:02 AM A healthy performance by Adidas (PMMAF.PK) in Q1 bodes well for Nike (NKE) as demand for higher-margin products helped boost profitability. What to watch: Nike wants to get back on track in China which accounts for over 10% of its total revenue and the strong performance by Adidas in its golf category in new markets could translate well for Nike. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, April 26, 12:59 PM The Internet sales tax bill is expected to hit a major roadblock in the U.S. House after cruising through the Senate relatively unscathed. Though the bill has the backing of Amazon and the National Retail Federation, gaining favor with hardline House Republicans could take some time. What to watch: Will more companies start to cut advantageous tax deals with individual states like Nike (NKE) does in Oregon? Comment! [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Sunday, April 7, 2:01 AM The median total salary for the 100 highest-paid CEOs of major companies edged up 2.8% to over $14M in 2012, while the cost of perks, such as the use of private jets, jumped 19% to 320,635. Oracle's (ORCL) Larry Ellison was the top earner, receiving $96.2M in salary, perks and bonuses, and $90.7M in stock options. Other CEOs in the top 10 include HCA's (HCA) Richard Bracken, Disney's (DIS) Robert Iger, Nike's (NKE) Mark Parker, Starbucks' (SBUX) Howard Schultz and American Express' (AXP) Kenneth Chenault. 4 Comments
- Wednesday, April 3, 3:12 PM The Forensic Accounting ETF (FLAG) drops Nike (NKE) and Wal-Mart (WMT) from its portfolio, giving each "F" rankings based on its forensic accounting model. Other "F's" include SNI, XLNX, MOS, and TIF. Those garnering an "A" include CHK, HES, EA and AKAM. Since its Feb. 1 inception, the ETF has matched the S&P's performance. 2 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 28, 9:57 AM Athletic apparel sales are hanging tough despite a downward blip in last week's report on retail sales, according to Hedgeye. The key point is that pricing indicators don't show a big ramp in promotional activity in the sector. Winners and losers: Nike (NKE +0.3%) is as dominant as ever while Adidas (ADDYY.PK) and Reebok continue to work on a turnaround. Meanwhile, Under Armour (UA +0.8%) is making slow and steady forward progress. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 28, 7:43 AM Goldman Sachs picks up coverage on Nike (NKE) again with a Buy rating and $70 price target. The firm sees impressive 9% organic growth in FY14 for Nike and margin expansion over the next two years. NKE +1.4% premarket to $59.25. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, March 22, 10:16 AM Nike's (NKE +10.9%) broad sales gains in North America and e-commerce channels during Q4 were impressive enough to help drive shares to 52-week highs, but Morningstar warns that long-term sales growth needs to be derived from China and other emerging markets. Revenue in China fell 9% to $635M as a couple of misfires on product strategy dealt a blow. What to watch: If gross margins continue to impress and the company can execute in China and Japan while keeping its momentum going in North America - even more upside could be in store. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
