- Sunday, May 19, 6:34 PM Nokia's (NOK) rumored 41MP sensor Lumia phone, codenamed EOS, will have a polycarbonate body and a display similar to that of the Lumia 920 (4.5," 1280x768 display), a source tells WMPoweruser. The source adds the phone will be lighter than the 920, that its thickness will be on par, and that its camera will sport a xenon flash and a lens cover "that opens when the camera app is started." A new camera app is also said to be on board. The Verge reported in January AT&T will sell the phone; considering T-Mobile is selling the 925, there's some logic to that. 40 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 14, 9:27 AM The Lumia 925 (NOK) is officially revealed. Thanks to its aluminum frame, it's ~50g lighter than the 920, and ~30g lighter than the 928. Otherwise, the specs resemble the 928's: a 4.5," 1280x768, OLED display, a dual-core, 1.5 GHz., Qualcomm (QCOM) processor, and an 8.7MP camera with optical image stabilization. There's no xenon flash, but there is an advanced camera app that leverages Scalado. Nokia will be charging a steep unsubsidized price of €469 ($609) when the 925 hits China and Europe this June. But T-Mobile USA (TMUS) is expected to sell it for less than $100 subsidized. Shares -5%. Were investors expecting a 41MP sensor PureView phone? 26 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, May 13, 6:36 PM Evleaks once more posts pictures of a new Nokia (NOK) phone ahead of its official unveiling. This time, it's the Lumia 925 (Catwalk), set to be introduced tomorrow in London. As expected, the 925 is built out of metal rather than the polycarbonate used for the Lumia 920 and 928, and is notably thinner than those phones. (earlier) 6 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 13, 10:39 AM Nokia (NOK +4.5%) catches a 2-notch upgrade to Buy from Denmark's Danske Bank, and responds accordingly. The firm cites growing optimism about Nokia's debt-raising and turnaround abilities, and the improving performance of Nokia Siemens. Meanwhile, a teaser ad for an upcoming Lumia phone shows a device with an aluminum body and large lens. Is it the Catwalk phone, or a Lumia with a 41MP PureView sensor? Either way, odds are it'll be unveiled at tomorrow's London event. 9 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, May 10, 4:59 PM Facebook (FB) is partnering with Nokia (NOK) to offer free access to Facebook services (provided carriers support it) to buyers of the new $99 Asha 501, which is aimed at emerging markets. The deal helps the 501 better compete against low-end Android competition, and extends Facebook's efforts to grow its emerging markets base by offering free/discounted access. 44M of the 54M monthly users Facebook added in Q1 came from outside of North America or Europe, and many were likely mobile-only. Monetizing these users remains a challenge. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, May 10, 10:26 AM Nokia (NOK +2.7%) officially unveils the Lumia 928. It has a 4.5," 1280x768, OLED display (many high-end Android phones are now at 1080p), a 1.5GHz. dual-core Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon processor, an 8.7MP camera with optical image stabilization and a xenon flash, and high-amp mics for audio recording. The specs are generally in-line with those mentioned in rumors. Verizon will start selling the 928 on May 16 for a subsidized $100 (with a rebate). Separately, Nokia announces the Lumia 620 (3.8" display) will be sold by AT&T's new Aio Wireless prepaid brand. 22 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 9, 6:34 AM Nokia (NOK) unveils $99 Asha smartphone in India. When compared to previous models, the new phone acts more like a fully-featured smartphone with Internet access and a touch-screen with built-in social media apps. The move is part of a push to grab market share in emerging markets, a critical piece of the puzzle in the battle for global smartphone supremacy. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 7, 2:31 PM Stephen Elop had to hear from disgruntled investors unhappy with his ongoing commitment to Windows Phone at Nokia's (NOK +2.4%) shareholder meeting. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Please switch to another road," said one of them. The criticism is aired as Walmart begins selling the Lumia 521 (runs on T-Mobile USA's network) for an unsubsidized $130. Both Walmart's site and many stores are out of stock, but limited supply (an issue with the Lumia 920 and 920T launches) could be a factor. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:23 AM Nokia (NOK) remains committed to Windows Phone, says Stephen Elop ahead of the company's shareholder meeting. Elop has hinted in the past Nokia is open to using Android down the line. He also promises new Asha phones will soon be unveiled (previous). WP has seen moderate success over the last few months, though it's faring better in Europe and certain emerging markets than the U.S. Also: a Vanity Fair ad confirms the existence of the Lumia 928, as well as its use of Nokia's PureView tech and Carl Zeiss optics. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, May 3, 2:41 PM Microsoft (MSFT +0.7%) roundup: 1) An upcoming Surface tablet will feature a 7.5" high-res display, but mass-production won't start until Q1 '14, says NPD. 2) Acer is apparently set to launch an 8" Windows 8 Pro tablet that will sell for $380; the cheapest iPad Mini goes for $329. 3) R.I.P. Hotmail: Microsoft has migrated all 400M+ active Hotmail accounts to its Outlook.com platform. 4) Walmart will sell Nokia's (NOK) Lumia 521, a U.S. variant of the Lumia 520, for less than $150 unsubsidized. That gives Windows Phone, which has been at a price disadvantage relative to low-end Android gear, a chance to move downmarket. (Surface launch report) 13 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 30, 5:00 AM Nokia (NOK) is investing in Pelican Imaging, whose technology promises to improve autofocus, depth, and splicing for phone camera images, a move NOK hopes will help it win back customers from Apple and Android users. Array cameras, which mesh multiple optics into one image, "are on the cusp of being commercialized. It's very complicated to do this algorithmically, and Pelican is one of the companies that has mastered this technology," Nokia says. 33 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, April 26, 8:20 AM Steve Overman, Nokia's (NOK) VP of global branding strategy and marketing strategy, has left the company. Overman co-wrote Nokia's marketing deal with Microsoft, and handled marketing campaigns for the Lumia and Asha lines. Last month, Nokia saw the departure of Shiv Shivakumar, the company's operations chief for India, the Middle East, and Africa. 22 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 26, 5:46 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) strengthened its lead as the world's top vendor of mobile phones and of smartphones in Q1, IDC estimates. The South Korean giant increased its market share in the latter category to 32.7% from 28.8 a year earlier and shipped more smartphones than the next four providers combined. Apple's (AAPL) share slipped to 17.3% from 23%. The global cellular phone market grew 4% on year to 418.6M devices, with smartphones outshipping feature phones for the first time. 24 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Thursday, April 25, 6:42 PM Nokia (NOK) has scheduled a May 14 event in London to show off new Lumia hardware. The rumor mill has indicated Nokia is working on an aluminum Lumia 920 successor (codenamed Catwalk), a Windows Phone with a 41MP PureView image sensor, and a Galaxy Note-sized phablet. Meanwhile, Nokia has begun selling its $20 105 feature phone (previous) in China, as it tries to regain lost ground in the country. In spite of the price, a Nokia exec claims the phone's profit margin (presumably he means gross margin) is comparable to that of Nokia's smartphones. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 24, 11:59 AM Even as many telecom equipment makers slump due to AT&T's capex cuts, Ericsson (ERIC +4.1%) is up after beating Q1 EPS estimates and providing upbeat commentary. Sales only rose 2% Y/Y - hardware +3%, global services +4%, support solutions (a relatively small business) -19% - and gross margin fell 130 bps Y/Y to 32%, something Ericsson attributes to projects that are initially low-margin. But in remarks that have to please those who see Ericsson as a mobile data traffic play, the company says it will see a higher mix of "capacity projects" in 2H. Rivals Alcatel-Lucent (ALU +2.3%) and Nokia (NOK +1.4%) are also higher, though a rally in European equities could be playing a role. (PR/slides) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 23, 8:43 AM Nokia (NOK) roundup: 1) Bloomberg reports Verizon is "set to unveil a plan next month" for the anticipated Lumia 928, which (in-line with past reports) is said to feature a 4.5" display, metal body (likely aluminum), 8MP camera, and wireless charging support. As would-be Verizon Galaxy S IV buyers can vouch, Verizon often takes longer to test/qualify new phones than rivals. 2) A Dutch court has granted Nokia an injunction for HTC's flagship One smartphone, declaring the phone's microphone chips (supplied by STM) use Nokia's IP. 16 Comments [Tech]
