- Wednesday, January 23, 2:27 PM Windows Phone (MSFT) grew its smartphone share within the EU5 economies to 5.4% in 12 weeks ending Dec. 23, per Kantar Comtech. Italy was a strong point (13.9% share), and Germany a weak point (2.6%). The iPhone (AAPL) made up 51.2% of U.S. sales (up 630 bps Y/Y) and 66.2% of Japanese sales, but its EU5 share was barely changed at 25.6%, while Android (GOOG) rose 1020 bps to 61.1%. The iPhone's share of "Urban China" is pegged at 21.9%, and Android's at 72.5%. (tables - PDF) (12 weeks ending Oct. 28) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 23, 9:13 AM Nokia (NOK) is working on a Windows Phone containing an image sensor similar to the 41MP sensor found in the PureView 808, The Verge reports. The site adds the phone will use an aluminum body and be sold by AT&T later this year. The 808's camera was widely praised, but its use of Symbian and a mediocre display hampered sales. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, January 21, 3:11 AM Nokia Siemens Networks reportedly plans to issue €700M worth of high-yield bonds in the Spring to test investor interest in the company and assess the potential of a possible IPO. However, Nokia (NOK) and Siemens (S) have no plans to exit the telecom-equipment company, which has enjoyed a turnaround with three straight quarters of underlying profitability. 15 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, January 18, 12:10 PM Nokia (NOK -1.7%) is getting on board the 3D printing bandwagon: the company is releasing a development kit (Nokia calls it a 3DK) that allows users to create custom shells for the Lumia 820. One could see the concept eventually extended to a variety of other hardware accessories. 24 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 17, 5:21 AM Nokia (NOK) intends to reduce its IT headcount by more than 1,000 as it outsources its tech needs to Indian suppliers, with 820 workers set to move to HCL Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services. Over 300 jobs will be cut. The move is part of Nokia's restructuring in which it is slashing 10,000 positions. Shares +1.75% premarket. (PR) 7 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, January 14, 11:45 AM Nokia (NOK -2.7%) ticks lower following a downgrade to Underweight from Barclays' Jeff Kvaal: he argues "neither Lumia nor Windows Phone has reached critical mass," and claims "CES checks showed few signs WP8’s promise is converting to sustained demand." Moreover, Kvaal believes Nokia, which expects to report 4.4M Lumia sales for a supply-constrained Q4, will need to sell 10M-12M Lumias/quarter for its Smart Devices ops to break even, assuming a €225 ASP, 20% gross margin, and €2B in opex. (April downgrade) 24 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, January 11, 7:09 PM Now that Nokia Siemens (NOK, SI) is once more growing and profitable, many believe its owners have a chance to sell or publicly list the 50/50 telecom equipment JV, rather than be forced to sell off its core assets at a discount. Some analysts think NSN could easily be worth more than €5B ($6.67B). 13 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 10, 6:02 PM Nokia's (NOK +18.7%) sell-side critics are impressed with the margin improvement disclosed in the company's Q4 pre-announcement, but offer more cautious takes on its phone sales. 4.4M Q4 Lumia shipments (hurt by supply constraints) topped Baird's (Underperform) forecast of 3.8M, but missed Wells Fargo's (Market Perform) estimate of 6.5M. Bernstein's Pierre Ferragu, a long-time bear, still thinks "Nokia will lose all its low end Smartphone and high end feature phone businesses over the next few years," and post 2015 EPS of just €0.12. 15 Comments [Tech]

Margin for seasonally weak Q1 seen at -6% to +2%. Nokia Siemens sales were €4B (+5% Y/Y) with an op. margin of 13%-15% (lifted by a €30M patent payment), above prior guidance of 4%-12%. Q1 op. margin expected to be -1% to +7%. (PR) 5 Comments [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, January 10, 9:31 AM More on Nokia: Lumia shipments totaled 4.4M, up from Q3's 2.9M and generally above forecasts. Stephen Elop says Lumia 920 sales were supply-constrained. Total smart devices sales were 6.6M, -64% Y/Y (withering Symbian base), but thanks to a higher Lumia mix, ASP jumped to €182 from Q3's €155. Mobile phone units were 79.6M, -15% Y/Y, ASP roughly even Q/Q at €31. 9.3M Asha phones sold, up from 6.5M in Q3. NOK +17.6%. (PR) 19 Comments [Tech, Earnings]

Losers: MCP -12%. ASNA -12%. ARO -9%. TIF -8%. Comment! Both phones and Nokia Siemens Networks results are better than expected. (PR) 45 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 9, 4:00 AM The Justice Department and the Patent Office are against imposing product-sales bans for IP infringements except in very rare cases, the agencies said yesterday. They also appealed to the ITC to give the public interest - i.e. that "exclusion orders are inappropriate" - the top priority when deciding sanctions for patent breaches. The comments come against a background of the global IP war between the top mobile phone players. 12 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
