After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: FNSR +10%. GME +9%. HW +7%. EDAP +6%. NOK +5%.
After-hours top losers: GASX -9%. ZIXI -7%. SCS -4%. QAI -2%. GLW -2%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Wednesday, June 19, 4:14 PM Nokia (NOK) +2.6% AH after the WSJ reports Microsoft (MSFT) held advanced talks to buy Nokia's phone business, and was "close to an oral agreement" at one point, but adds discussions broke down in part due to price and concerns about Nokia's competitive positioning. One source says the talks "took place as recently as this month, but aren't likely to be revived." 26 Comments [Tech, M&A, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, June 19, 1:36 PM Though high-end Lumia models such as the 920, 925, and (expected) EOS get most of the ink, the low-end 520 could be the biggest seller in Nokia's (NOK -0.3%) Windows Phone lineup. Google Trends data points to surging interest in the 520, which features a 4" display, lacks 4G support, and is dirt cheap - Wal-Mart sells the 521, a variant working on T-Mobile's network, for an unsubsidized $130 .... if it's in stock. Also, the 520 is now #2 in GSM Arena's daily interest rankings, behind only the Galaxy S4; no other Nokia phone is in the top-10. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 18, 4:02 PM Huawei says in an e-mailed statement it "has no plans" to acquire Nokia (NOK +4.6%). Shares have given back a big chunk of their earlier gains, but they still closed up sharply. Huawei consumer group chairman Richard Yu qualified his remarks about his company being willing to buy Nokia by suggesting Nokia's commitment to Windows Phone could be an issue. "Whether Windows Phone will be successful is difficult to say ... It has a very small market share." Huawei launched the W1, a low-end WP8 device, earlier this year. 27 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, June 18, 1:14 PM Nokia (NOK +9.3%) soars after the chairman of Huawei's consumer business group says his company would be open to buying Nokia in an off-hand remark. Any offer from Huawei would face intense EU scrutiny, given long-standing worries about the company's Chinese government/military ties. Is this a repeat of BlackBerry/Lenovo? 26 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A, Breaking News]
- Sunday, June 16, 8:54 PM "Nokia (NOK) has mostly nailed the design with the Lumia 925, but Windows Phone (MSFT) is holding it back," writes The Verge's Tom Warren while rating the phone 8.1/10. Warren likes the 925's aluminum build, performance, and low-light camera shots, but Windows Phone's app issues (not just in terms of availability, but also quality relative to similar iOS/Android apps) and missing features (reliable notifications, 1080p display support, etc.) remain a problem. Engadget's Mat Smith offers a similar take. Nokia exec Vesa Jutila admitted last month missing apps remains the "biggest complaint" of Lumia users; Microsoft is trying to address the problem by paying some developers $100K+ to build WP8 apps. 104 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 14, 9:54 AM Nokia (NOK +4.2%) rallies after the WSJ reports Siemens (SI -0.5%) is talking to P-E firms, including TPG, KKR, and Blackstone, to "gauge their interest" in buying its 50% stake in Nokia Siemens, and that Nokia itself is thinking of buying Siemens out (possibly with the help of Finnish sovereign wealth fund Solidium). Analysts have pegged the value of NSN, which has turned profitable following a huge restructuring, at above €7B ($9.4B) after factoring debt. Bloomberg reported in February Nokia and Siemens had "intensified talks" to end Siemens' involvement in NSN. 33 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, June 13, 1:32 PM "Zoom. Reinvented." That's the headline given by Nokia (NOK +0.3%) for an invite to a July 11 NYC event. There's a good chance Nokia's rumored EOS Lumia phone (expected to sport a 41MP image sensor and be sold by AT&T) will be the star of the show. 24 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 11, 1:47 PM End of an era: Nokia (NOK -2.4%) will ship its last Symbian phone this summer as it fully focuses its smartphone resources on Lumia hardware, and pushes its Asha line to consumers wanting sub-$100 touchscreen phones. Nokia's Symbian shipments plunged to 500K in Q1, leading total smartphone units to fall 49% Y/Y in spite of 5.6M Lumia shipments. The news comes shortly after HSBC predicted a mix shift towards Lumia phones will allow Nokia's phone ASP to fall only 1% in 2013 in spite of feature phone ASP declines, and rise 6.5% in 2014. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, June 6, 10:20 AM Pictures of Nokia's (NOK +1.4%) rumored EOS phone - a Lumia device said to feature a 41MP image sensor similar to that of the Symbian-based 808 PureView - have leaked. Like the 808, the EOS has a giant, protruding, camera module on its back, replete with a large flash. In-line with a May report, it also appears to have a polycarbonate body and a ~4.5" display. Sources tell The Verge the pictures are of "genuine engineering samples," that Nokia is expected to launch the device in July, and that AT&T (T) will exclusively sell it in the U.S. 24 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, May 31, 9:43 AM Nokia's (NOK -2%) appeals to have a $370M Indian tax bill dismissed have been shot down by local authorities. Nokia says it's weighing all options in response, including having Delhi's High Court review the case again. The bill is for a 5-year period starting in India's 2006-07 fiscal year. (previous) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 30, 10:24 AM Nokia's (NOK -2.6%) is likely to issue a Q2 warning in the next few weeks, writes RBC in a note that's pressuring shares. In addition to tough smartphone competition, the firm is worried about declining feature phone sales. Nokia's feature phone unit shipments fell 21% Y/Y in Q1 thanks to Android's low-end momentum, and its feature phone ASP fell 10% Q/Q and 15% Y/Y to just €28 ($36). 44 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 29, 2:54 AM Nokia's (NOK) fortunes have reached a new nadir after it lost the lead in its home country of Finland to Samsung, IDC estimates. Nokia's market share cratered to 33.6% from 48% in 2012 and 65% as recently as 2010, while that of Samsung increased to 36.1% in Q1 2013 from 28% a year earlier. 21 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, May 23, 12:13 PM Dover (DOV +4.8%) is upgraded to Buy from Neutral with a $90 price target at BAML following news it is spinning its Knowles and Sound Solutions businesses into a new public company. The firm had been concerned about DOV's exposure to Nokia (NOK) and Blackberry (BBRY) platforms as well as the pace of the value ramp up on Apple's (AAPL) iPhone. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Sunday, May 19, 6:34 PM Nokia's (NOK) rumored 41MP sensor Lumia phone, codenamed EOS, will have a polycarbonate body and a display similar to that of the Lumia 920 (4.5," 1280x768 display), a source tells WMPoweruser. The source adds the phone will be lighter than the 920, that its thickness will be on par, and that its camera will sport a xenon flash and a lens cover "that opens when the camera app is started." A new camera app is also said to be on board. The Verge reported in January AT&T will sell the phone; considering T-Mobile is selling the 925, there's some logic to that. 40 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 14, 9:27 AM The Lumia 925 (NOK) is officially revealed. Thanks to its aluminum frame, it's ~50g lighter than the 920, and ~30g lighter than the 928. Otherwise, the specs resemble the 928's: a 4.5," 1280x768, OLED display, a dual-core, 1.5 GHz., Qualcomm (QCOM) processor, and an 8.7MP camera with optical image stabilization. There's no xenon flash, but there is an advanced camera app that leverages Scalado. Nokia will be charging a steep unsubsidized price of €469 ($609) when the 925 hits China and Europe this June. But T-Mobile USA (TMUS) is expected to sell it for less than $100 subsidized. Shares -5%. Were investors expecting a 41MP sensor PureView phone? 26 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
