Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
How come foreigners can keep assets here and not be taxed on interest, capital gains, estates etc., but American's who do the same overseas are criminals? I guess we are against illegal immigration unless they are rich! Replyancisco
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
An interesting juxtaposition of articles:1. New rules against naked short selling by traders who are trying to bring down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and with them the entire home mortgage industry in the name of creative destruction, er. profit.
2. One of the great Swiss banks has been helping US clients illegally avoid some $17 billion in taxes. I'm not sure what the UBS PR office has to say, other than that they will stop taking such clients in the US.
There are a few changes that we can believe in. Reply

i have two questions. is spwr dropping because of disappointment with cypress? is yum dropping because china overall growth slowed a little? ReplyMotorola, Nokia, Palm, RIM Suffering iPhone Headache [view article]
Rimm's big growth was with their consumer phones. They pushed hard into this space as Apple entered the phone business. With the iPhone at $600 then $400 Rimm was cheaper consumer choice at $200. Now with the iPhone at $199 the consumer will move toward Apple and Rimm's growth will slow. If Rimm's growth slows the stock will tank a lot. Can't have a 40 pe with growth slowing. I own both Apple and Nokia. I plan on moving more to Nokia because:1. I've waited long enough for Apple's big iPhone 2.0 rally that never happened.
2. Nokia does not hinge on a sickly looking charismatic leader who may not be around much longer. Reply

PS: Palm phones suck. ReplyMotorola, Nokia, Palm, RIM Suffering iPhone Headache [view article]
I think saying the iPhone is taking business away from these other phone makers is a bit much. The iPhone is never going to unseat Blackberry as the goto business road warrior phone. The iPhone is also never going to be free and reach the kind of mass market Nokia and Motorola phones will. It's a nice toy that some people want and can afford but implying these companies are tembling because of this is absurd. ReplyJacome

I talked to a top 10 holder after RIMM missed: he still liked the name, but I couldn't tell if he was holding onto it all or trimming...meat of the convo suggested he thinks earnings normalize after this ad spend and RIMM protects its share...well, ya, but even if EPS remains intact, there is no certainty how much the Street will pay for them...
PEs are driven by growth rates and discount rates: sadly, in RIMMS case, risk could be going up while growth is going south...100 is the next stop, if AAPL sell thru is robust, 80 here we come.... Reply

Yourope, you're speaking from sheer biased opinion, killing something before it's even launched. That's just nuts, and hurts any credibility you may have. ReplyResearch In Motion's Pullback is an Opportunity [view article]
Honestly, to me, going long on a stock with a PE of 45 in a bear market seems like a suicide.... good luck! ReplyDisgusted

"I wouldn't be surprised if Apple stock drops a little. iPhone sales have got to be very weak in the 2nd quarter...."Keep hoping!
The expected 'weak' 2nd quarter for iphone sales is the reason AAPL is at the $175 level instead of the $200 level, and RIM missed even though there was virtually no competition from Apple.
Wait to see the end of the current quarter when iphones are available in 2000+ stores. Reply

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple stock drops a little. iPhone sales have got to be very weak in the 2nd quarter given that people would have been waiting for the new iPhone. Of course, once the new iPhone is released, sales will hit the 10 million unit mark easily before the end of the year, but then their guidance during the upcoming release is not expected to be very good given that they like to sandbag their numbers. I expect the stock to pull back after earnings. Reply
