Nine Adult Entertainment Stocks to Weather the Recession [view article]
Talk about the "almost dirty dozen." I did not "examine" these carefully but look at LNET. This one has been losing money for several quarters. It even seems to have negative shareholder equity at this point. At least on that one I would pass no matter how stimulating it might appear on the surface. Reply

Nine Adult Entertainment Stocks to Weather the Recession [view article]
I have owned Ricks since Sept 07 and I can't believe this stock is stuck in this trading range. They seem to make projected earnings with regularity and have forecast 2009 earnings of $2 a share. $2 a share, with huge growth. This should be a $30 stock. I will hold until it hits a fair price or until it goes to zero.
I have bought and sold Ricks until I have nothing in the shares I hold. This is definately a traders stock.

Exploring Joel Greenblatt’s Magic Formula for Picking Value Stocks [view article]
The www.magicformulafunds..../ site says "MagicFormulaInve... while looking great and easy, is simply not accurate. Professor Greenblatt’s back tests provided accurate results, however, the person responsible for maintaining the website simply isn’t doing it right.Stocks that should be ranked 356 or 253 are showing up in the top 30 as the website doesn’t use an accurate data source. I agree about the dividend yield although the company does have about 80 cents per share in cash along with the regular quarterly cash flows so if they want to they could continue it for several more quarters. That being said, I think they would be wise to lower the dividend and explore some growth opportunities with some of the cash left over. At $5 per share with 80 cents of cash and no LTD you have a stock selling at roughly $4.20 backing out cash giving the stock a p/e likely in the high single digits on next years results.

Looked at NOOF earlier this year. I liked the zero debt and decent dividend... but could not (and still cannot) figure out how that was possible with a 246% dividend payout ratio.

And because I did not (and still do not) understand such magical processes, I've stayed away. (stats from finance.yahoo.com/q/ks...)

Any enlightening explanations would be appreciated.

Thanks for the write-up. I used to own Mitcham. I think 3D-seismic is a very interesting "Peak Oil" sector play. In a world with declining oil reserves, I think 3D-seismic companies will become very important. I currently own BOLT and OYOG. Do you have an opinion on either of these?

Also, I owned NOOF for a while (after reading Joel Greenblatt's "Little" book). The stock never made much progress while I owned it.

New Frontier Media: Adult Pay-Per-View Co. Yields High Dividends [view article]
I have been purchasing NOOF in steps. Average purchase price 4.73 (I bought alot at 5.00 before buying more around the 4.50 range). I can see NOOF hitting ATLEAST 9.00 again with a dividend of .50. Thats not too bad. I look at it as, we can purchase it at around 4.30-5.00 watch it climb back to 9.00 (hey its almost already paid off) and then on top of that make another .50 per share in dividends, I say sweet.

Sex May Sell, But Is It Profitable? [view article]
I don't think the peer-grouping of Rick's is reasonable enough to, say, publish or talk about. Employees are important to many firms, what then is the argument?

"If I turn out to be wrong about Rick's the most likely reason would be that its management is better at dealing with regulation than its competitors."

This space is wide-open. There are scores (no pun) of privately held clubs willing to sell for far less than ten times earnings. Also, that "stratospheric&qu... P/E is going to look a lot lower in four weeks when the next batch of earnings come out. Had you done a small amount of DD you would know this. Rick's management is very good and this is observable. Read the article in the New York Times after Rick's bought the paradise club (Published 1/21/2005) and see how things have changed. Rick's management also understand their legal environment as well as anyone -- this is necessary but not sufficient for success.

The next large acquisition closed today, you don't want to be short.

Then, by that same logic, we should start shorting gaming stocks because Vegas is going to shut down and all of those companies are going bust up. Then, we can short jewelry stores and car lots because trips to those are usually expensive. Why don't we ban ex-wives, while we're at it because, god knows, they're the most expensive yet useless item around.

While I respect your opinion to not visit these establishments, I feel the views you have provided here may be clouded by your own personal beliefs. I'm not saying these stocks are for everyone but you've written about an industry you have obvious disdain for and it shows.

Regicider -- the problem with the trading down is that none of Rick's online properties are dominant. Why would I go to CouplesTouch.com when I can go to Adult Friend Finder (although I wouldn't go to either). While I will admit to not having experienced the joys of strip clubbery, in a recession people will run out of money (strip clubs are expensive). People may not stop going but they will cut back, and that is what will kill profitability. Reply

Michael Goode, sure people may trade down in a recession from strip--I mean gentlemen's clubs to the internet. Did you know that RICK has an internet website component to its business model?

"Rick's Cabaret International also owns and operates adult entertainment Internet Web sites, including xxxPassword.com that features adult content; CouplesTouch.com, a personals site for those in the swinging lifestyle; and NaughtyBids.com, an online adult auction site that contains consumer-initiated auctions for items, such as adult videos, apparel, photo sets, adult paraphernalia, and other erotica."

You should do a bit of due diligence before writing a whole article on the happiest place in the world. And if you don't think that a set of real breasts aren't as addictive as booze and cigs, you obviously have never had a real (err...fake) pair shoved in your face. Once again, due diligence my friend.
