NSM vs. ETF Alternatives

- Thursday, May 16, 7:50 AM Those now kicking it in their new beachside homes courtesy of buying into Altisource Asset Management (AAMC.OB) when it was spun off from ASPS late last year (it's up 20-fold since), might be interested in the potential spinoff of Solutionstar from Nationstar Mortgage (NSM). Management won't confirm it because they can't, says FBR's Paul Miller, but he has no doubt they're actively discussing it. ASPS is itself a spinoff - from Ocwen (OCN) in 2009, and up 500% since. 1 Comment [Financials, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, May 13, 1:04 PM Dynex Capital (DX) CEO and hedge funder Tom Akin says goodbye to Nationstar Mortgage (NSM +1.6%) after a near-tripling in price over the last year. "Don't want to be there when the Fed whispers less QE ..." 2 Comments [Financials, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, May 9, 7:30 AM A Q4 earnings miss by Walter Investment (WAC) in March set off a savage selloff in it as well as sizable declines in the other mortgage servicers (OCN, NSM, HLSS), but it may not be so today. Walter +8.2% premarket after breezing past Q1 earnings estimates and reaffirming FY13 guidance. Conference call at 10 ET. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials]
- Tuesday, May 7, 10:47 AM Mortgage servicers all move higher after a big earnings report from Nationstar (NSM +5.7%). Nationstar cousin Newcastle (NCT +2%), Ocwen (OCN +2.4%), Walter Investment (WAC +2.1%). Scale is key in the servicing business, and Nationstar has increased its UPB by an average 104% annually since 2008 (presentation). Another nice profit center is originations, and they're expected to more than triple this year, helped by the immediately accretive acquisition of Greenlight at 0.7x AEBITDA. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]

Tuesday, May 7, 9:13 AM
Premarket gainers: SNTS +11%. ALU +11%. CVLT +8%. HIMX +7%. NSM +7%. FOSL +6%. DTV +6%.
Losers: RKUS -24%. ARUN -17%. AKRX -7%. PAL -6%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Tuesday, May 7, 6:59 AM More on Nationstar Mortgage (NSM) Q1 earnings: Clicking. Pro forma EPS of $0.85 (excludes expenses from BofA MSR acquisition) vs. $0.71 in Q4, $0.44 a year ago. Revenue of $431.1M up 163% Y/Y. UPB of servicing portfolio of $312B, up 50% Q/Q, up 203% Y/Y. Ups FY13 EPS guidance to $4.05-$4.75 and FY14 to $6.45-$7.50. Announces the acquisition of mortgage originator Greenlight Financial Services for up to $75M in cash - expected to be immediately accretive. CC at 10 ET. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials]
- Tuesday, May 7, 6:41 AM Nationstar Mortgage (NSM): Q1 EPS of $0.85 beats by $0.18. Revenue of $431M beats by $61.08M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]
- Thursday, April 18, 11:48 AM More on Home Loan Servicing Solutions (HLSS +2.1%) Q1 earnings: "Our outlook on prepayment speeds ... has become increasingly positive fueled in part by Ocwen's continued success in resolving delinquent loans," says Chairman Bill Erbey (also OCN chairman). Not even lower interest rates and an improving housing market have altered the trend of lower prepayment speeds. Other servicers today: OCN -0.8%, NCT -2%, NSM +0.9%, WAC +1.7%. Comment! [Earnings, Financials]
- Friday, April 12, 2:48 PM Buoyed yesterday by news the HARP program is being extended another two years, the mortgage services give it back today after JPMorgan and Wells Fargo report slowdowns in their mortgage business. OCN -3.4%, NSM -2.6%, WAC -3.2%, NCT -1.3%. One would think fewer refis would be a good thing, but they too - especially NSM - make money on originations. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 28, 10:26 AM Ninety percent of gain-on-sale revenue converts to cash generally within 90 days, says Nationstar Mortgage (NSM) in its March investor presentation. Doug Kass is waging a twitter campaign to short NSM vs. a long in Ocwen (OCN) due to what he says is the latter's better earnings quality. Ocwen last month made a great presentation focusing on its conservative accounting. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, March 26, 2:54 PM Fans of mortgage servicers have a look at how the sausage is made as Rob Chrisman passes along a couple of sales pitches for MSR portfolios. The servicers able to quickly scale up in size have an advantage as banks unload their portfolios for capital reasons and smaller outfits look to raise funds. After being savaged last week, NSM +6.1%, OCN +3%, and NCT +3.3% are bouncing. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 5:41 PM Residential mortgage servicing company Nationstar Mortgage Holdings (NSM -3.1%) priced $200M of 8-year senior notes at 103.25. The offering will close on March 26. The total principal amount was upsized due to "significant demand." (Previously: NSM offers $150M of 8-year notes) 1 Comment [Financials, Breaking News]
- Thursday, March 21, 10:22 AM Maybe what's really hurting the servicing companies (NSM, OCN, WAC, NCT, HLSS) the past few sessions is increased competition angling for a piece of the lucrative MSR business. Quicken Loans continues a speedy build-up of its servicing portfolio, bringing it to $90B with the purchase of $34B in MSRs from Ally Bank. 2 Comments [Financials]
- Thursday, March 21, 9:06 AM Nationstar Mortgage (NSM) commences an offering of $150M of 8-year notes as it continues to move towards closing the acquisition of $215B in MSRs from Bank of America. (PR) Comment! [Financials]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:31 AM More on Walter Investment (WAC) (previous): "The underlying earnings power of Walter has not changed meaningfully as a result of the higher prepay speeds," says Credit Suisse, also defending the stock. Walter's dive yesterday spread through the whole servicing sector and may have made bargains of the high-flyers: OCN, NSM, HLSS, NCT. 3 Comments [Financials, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 19, 11:55 AM The hot mortgage servicing sector is getting whacked today, with the only news out being Walter Investment's (WAC -9.8%) earnings miss. The company is guiding to 2013 adjusted EBITDA of $650M-$725M vs. 2012's $241.7M. This smells like traders taking profits after some big runs in the stocks. NSM -7.2%, OCN -5.5%, HLSS -3.1%. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]

Nationstar Mortgage Holdings (NSM) also has a very nice linear graph. However, I worry what the IPO lockup expiration will do to the stock. - View all 1 replies

Michael Clark: You're correct, Tack. A 'slew' of short-sellers might be slain, ending up buried in the slough, sloughing their skin, out of the gain now.
