- Thursday, May 2, 7:34 AM Nestle (NSRGY.PK) sells its Bit-O-Honey brand to Pearson Candy Co. for an undisclosed amount. Pearson is owned by P-E firm Brynwood Partners and owns a number of other candy brands. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, April 22, 1:14 PM Spending on food for cats and dogs continues to surprise with industry sales threatening to topple the $20B mark this year. While many sectors are feeling the effect of consumer pulling back on spending, pet food companies have been able to keep their pricing power strong. Pet picks: Procter & Gamble (PG -0.3%), Colgate Palmolive (CAG -0.1%), Nestle (NSRGY.PK), Fresh Del Monte (FDP +0.2%). 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 18, 2:57 AM Nestle (NSRGY.PK): Q1 revenues +5.4% to 21.9B Swiss francs ($23.52B) vs consensus of 22.58B francs; underlying sales +4.3%. Organic sales growth in Asia, Oceania and Africa slows to 4.4%, affected by disruptions in the Middle East. Expects to see volatility throughout the year, but confirms FY guidance for underlying sales of +5-6% and improving operating margins. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Monday, April 8, 10:17 AM Dole Food (DOLE -0.8%) and Nestle's (NSRGY.PK) Gerber are involved in a potentially-costly trial in California over allegations they failed to properly warn consumers of unsafe levels of lead in products - including baby food and packaged fruit. California has the strictest rules in the nation on warning labels. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 9:00 AM While major food companies look to China for growth, the government in China looks set to play a little defense. State-owned China Foods says it will buy wineries in the U.S. and Australia to help the nation compete on the wine front. The bigger issue: Will China stand pat on the coffee front while Nestle (NSRGY.PK) and Starbucks (SBUX) invade its turf? 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 2, 7:18 AM Nestle (NSRGY.PK) plans to spend at least 100M yuan ($16M) on a new coffee facility in China in an effort to promote the alternative to tea. Although the final verdict on consumers' appetite for coffee in China isn't quite in yet, coffee sales rose 13% last year to 7B yuan ($1.13 billion) and Starbucks (SBUX) is optimistic enough on the market that it's considering selling bagged coffee in grocery stores. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 25, 8:27 AM Nestle (NSRGY.PK) recalls Kit Kat chunky bars and candy eggs in eight countries after consumers in the U.K. found plastic in the products. It's bad timing for the company with Easter around the corner. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 13, 7:35 AM The TBTF banks lie in bed at night dreaming they had the kind of government backstop afforded to the sugar industry. The USDA may buy 400K tons of sugar to prop up sugar processors which borrowed $862M under a government price-support scheme. Roll that one around for a few seconds. The higher prices pay for processors' vacation pads, but hit companies like HSY and NSRGY.PK, along with their customers. 2 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, March 4, 2:42 AM As expected, Swiss voters have approved an "anti-fat cat" initiative that allows investors to hold binding votes every year on executive pay at listed companies, and enable them to block large payouts at the start and end of a manager's employment. Executives who break the new law could face hefty fines and up to three years in jail. 5 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories]
- Sunday, March 3, 3:47 AM The Swiss are voting in a referendum today on an "anti-fat cat" initiative that would allow investors to hold binding votes on executive pay at listed companies and allow them to block large payouts at the start or end of a manager's employment. The measure is expected to pass. Companies that will be affected include Novartis (NVS), Nestle, UBS, Credit Suisse (CS), ABB, Roche, Transocean (RIG) and Weatherford (WFT). 13 Comments [Financials, Healthcare, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, February 26, 11:43 AM Nestle's (NSRGY.PK -0.4%) Health Science subsidiary ventures into the market for medical foods used to combat depression, agreeing to buy U.S. medical foods company Pamlab for an undisclosed sum. Pamlab makes combinations of vitamins that are used in conjunction with conventional drugs to help patients suffering from depression, as well as other maladies linked to brain and metabolic healthcare such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, dementia, depression and high-risk pregnancy. Comment! [Healthcare, Global & FX, M&A]
- Friday, February 22, 2:04 PM Fitch Ratings says the horse meat scandal in Europe will hurt small food producers and manufacturers which in turn could pressure margins and profits up and down the sector. At the top of the food chain (so to speak), a well-diversified Nestle (NSRGY.PK) and Tesco (TSCDF.PK) should remain relatively unscathed while specialty food and catering firms such as Sodexo will feel the most pain. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 20, 12:09 PM Shares of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR +1.8%) show extra volatility with the rumor mill churning again on interest from Nestle (NSRGY.PK) in the Keurig maker. Though the mix of a U.S-centric GMCR and global giant Nestle makes sense on some fronts, there's nothing concrete on a deal and the prospect for a bid is mainly post-Heinz M&A scuttlebutt. 6 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 19, 5:35 AM Nestle (NSRGY.PK) is the latest major food company to be drawn into the European horse-meat scandal after traces of equine DNA of above 1% were found in pasta meals, which it removed from shelves in Italy and Spain yesterday. Nielsen says the scandal has had a big effect on the consumption of frozen meat products in the U.K., with burger sales dropping 40% in the week to February 2. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, February 14, 6:44 AM More on Nestle (NSRGY.PK): The company expects to be able to continue to deliver on its model of organic growth between 5% and 6% despite the "challenging" environment across the globe. In the U.S. market, top-line results were driven by pet care and frozen foods. Nestle vs rivals: Unilever delivers more robust growth for recent periods while Procter & Gamble's heavier exposure to developed markets handcuffs its results. (previous) Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, February 14, 2:16 AM Nestle (NSRGY.PK): net income +12% to 10.61B francs ($12B), above consensus of 10.4B francs. EPS +12.2% to 3.33 francs, underlying EPS +7.5% in constant currencies. Revenue +10.2% to 92.2B francs. Organic growth +5.9% vs forecasts of 6%. Declares increase in the dividend to 2.05 francs. Expects 2012 to be just as challenging as 2012; forecasts organic growth of 5-6%, improved underlying EPS in constant currency. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
