Mr. Shaw makes an excellent point and one that should be remembered, but which the big Wall Street banks seem to have overlooked of late.

Return OF capital before return ON capital.

Looks like Wachovia got rid off the prior toxic risky wasted bank subsidiaries and kept the good ones. Now it can start from scratch to build a new banking subsidiary with safe practice together with its remaining good outstanding subsidiaries. The current subsidiaries of Wachovia make it look like "Merrill Lynch without the toxic risky waste", good job from management it separated the good bank from the bad bank overnight, plus its CEO Bob Steel is one of the top rated mutual fund managers. Wachovia will keep the valuable human resources and the talent that have expirience in the banking business saving them for the new banking subsidiary. Buying the municipal bonds or the auction rate securities will give the inflow of cash as long as its hold even to maturity, so the prospects are good.

The above list of winners and losers for the week is useful if you keep in mind that they have all been big losers so far and they will all lose more before this is over.

So, when the big losers of the week hit their support, cover them and then short the big winners of the last week when they start to falter. Example: is MBI really any better today than when it hit $4? Of course, not, it's actually closer to death. So why did it skyrocket to 16 and then come back down to $12? Is is "recovering"... Of course not, its just short covering that has run its course. Everyone and their dog was short that crap and now it is time to short it again since the herd of locusts has moved on. When the herd comes back, cover the short.

Well, maybe you don't have to this time b/c MBI is likely going to BK.

Thanks for pointing these out. With many financials in such a mess, I think it's easy for many investors to give up on the sector as a whole.

Have you seen this article? Do you think financials or international markets will recover first--www.greenfaucet.com/th...?

valueinvestor123 & Jake2 - please visit my blog and read a few posts before making such statements.

Fox - I simply picked 10 funds that have historically been considered value investors - and I define that as buying something for less than it is worth.

User 164258 - you are correct and the glitch is fixed on my blog. . .

I guess I am dumb like you. I think seeing what some pretty bright people are buying and selling is a pretty good place to get ideas to do my own research. It also provides a good benchmark to compare to my own portfolio.

You should do some further research on whether Buffett sold COP. I saw another post that he, in fact, got an expemption from the SEC to not report is position in that stock. Therefore, it simply droppped from the list and not sold. Given that COP is pretty cheap compared to the rest and that he and Gates were up in Canada looking at oil sands, it seems unlikely that he just punched out of this position in one quarter

I don't see much "value" in this kind of blanket value listing. Would prefer something more akin to e-valu-ating individual stocks, industries, etc., rather than, "Wither the hedge herd, mate?". Reply

I would like to know how you define "value" in the context that you are using it. I see one of the funds you mention has a position in First Solar. Reply
