- Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 8:20 AM Nuance Communications (NUAN) agrees to acquire Ditech Networks (DITC) for $1.45/share, a 79% premium to DITC's Monday closing price. NUAN says DITC's voice technologies will enhance its portfolio of mobile and enterprise voice offerings. NUAN +0.6% premarket, DITC halted. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 6:28 PM On day 1 of the Intel Developer Forum (INTC), the company: 1) Unveiled the Next Unit of Computing, a 4" x 4" motherboard featuring everything needed for a miniature PC. 2) Announced it will deliver ultrabooks in Q4 that sport Nuance's (NUAN) Dragon Assistant voice-recognition software. 3) Boasted its Haswell CPUs, due next year, will feature 1/20 the idle power draw of Sandy Bridge CPUs, as well as twice the graphics performance - the latter could be trouble for NVDA and AMD's graphics businesses. 14 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 4:42 PM David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital bailed out of Dell (DELL) and Research In Motion (RIMM) in Q2, and pared its Apple (AAPL) position. On the flip side, the firm increased its position in Microsoft (MSFT). David Tepper's Appaloosa Management also sold Apple shares, and also lowered its stake in Nuance (NUAN) and QQQ. However, Dan Loeb's Third Point bought 63K Apple shares. (13-Fs: Greenlight, Appaloosa, Third Point) 8 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 1:00 PM Nuance (NUAN +6.5%) rallies after stating it has no plans to make a bid for clinical transcription rival M*Modal (MODL -1.6%), which is set to be purchased by JPMorgan's P-E arm for $14/share. The weak Q2 report delivered yesterday by M*Modal could be a reason why. M*Modal had previously disclosed it turned down a $17/share offer from a competitor widely believed to be Nuance, due to timing and antitrust worries. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 9:47 AM Nuance (NUAN +3.4%) rises following a mixed FQ3 report. Deferred revenue totaled $304M, -3% Q/Q and +15% Y/Y. FQ4 guidance is for revenue of $483M-$503M and EPS of $0.46-$0.50 vs. a consensus of $500.7M and $0.48. In prepared remarks (.pdf), Nuance forecasts an FQ4 mix shift towards mobile solutions, such as its virtual assistant (Siri and Vlingo), custom auto, and voicemail-to-text solutions. The company also sees mobile's R&D needs continuing to grow. (debt offering) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 7:17 AM Nuance Communications (NUAN): FQ3 EPS of $0.45 beats by $0.05. Revenue of $431.7M (+31% Y/Y) misses by $8M. Shares +2.1% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 5:16 PM Nuance (NUAN +4.4%) falls slightly AH after announcing it will sell $600M worth of senior notes due 2020. Nuance, which has made plenty of acquisitions over its history, says it will use proceeds for "acquisitions and general corporate purpose. All signs indicate the company recently made a $17/share offer for M*Modal (MODL) that was rebuffed partly because of antitrust fears. Nuance had $1.4B in debt as of March 31. Earnings are due tomorrow. (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 11:46 AM Nuance (NUAN +4.5%) jumps after introducing Nina, a virtual assistant solution for iOS and Android customer support apps. Nina uses a combo of Nuance's voice recognition (VR), text-to-speech, and voice ID tech, and has already picked up financial services firm USAA as a customer. Nuance has been quickly fleshing out its mobile portfolio: other solutions include Swype, Vlingo, a developer program for its Dragon VR software, and the VR tech behind Apple's Siri. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 2:03 PM M*Modal (MODL +3.2%), which has agreed to be sold to JPMorgan's P-E arm for $14/share, jumps after disclosing it received a $17/share offer from a competitor it refers to as "Party A," but turned it down due to uncertainty about timing and antitrust issues. There's a good chance the company is Nuance (NUAN -1%), which is already a giant in the clinical transcription space. M*Modal traded as high as $14.99, and is currently moving at $14.51. - Friday, July 13, 2012, 2:51 PM UBS' Brent Thill cuts estimates for over a dozen enterprise software stocks. He cites the usual worries (macro problems in the West, delayed deals, forex issues, poor visibility), and thinks Informatica and Qlik's warnings made clear the severity of the situation. As a result, he recommends software investors stay cautious during earnings reason, and thinks prices could remain volatile until later this summer. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 1:42 PM Nuance (NUAN) announces its Dragon Drive Messaging voice recognition software will be available on BMW 3 and 7 Series models. Dragon Drive Messaging allows users to dictate and listen to e-mails and text messages, and provides Nuance, which has long provided solutions for hands-free voice and navigation systems, a means of boosting the licensing revenue it generates per vehicle. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 11:26 AM Nuance (NUAN +2.2%) trades higher following the purchase of rival clinical transcription/voice recognition solutions provider M*Modal (MODL) by JPMorgan's P-E arm. Deutsche (Buy) notes the deal's valuation (2x estimated FY13 sales) is in-line with the that paid by Nuance for recent acquisitions, and thinks it's evidence P-E firms are "becoming more active" in the medical transcription and records space. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 2:46 PM Nuance (NUAN +1.2%) introduces a major upgrade for its recently-acquired Swype mobile text-input software. New features include next word prediction, and the integration of Nuance's Dragon voice-recognition software. Samsung, Motorola Mobility, and other OEMs have built Swype into some of their Android models. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 11:35 AM More on Samsung: Reviews pour in for the U.S. version of the Galaxy S III, as domestic sales commence. David Pogue calls it "a bright, beautiful star." Mashable's Peter Pachal likes the phone's S Beam file-sharing feature, but isn't crazy about its voice-recognition tech (uses NUAN's Vlingo software). Walt Mossberg argues the phone's real impact comes from its iPhone-like ubiquity, a first for an Android device. QCOM, BRCM, and SWKS are among the chipmakers that benefit from U.S. sales. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 6:24 PM Spansion (CODE +4.8%), which has been having a hard time as mobile device makers stop buying its NOR flash memory chips in favor of relying on NAND flash, is introducing an acoustic co-processor chip for automotive, gaming, and consumer electronics hardware. The chip, which relies on Nuance's (NUAN +4%) voice recognition tech, is meant to improve voice input response times and accuracy. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 10:51 AM Nuance (NUAN +2.3%) valuation looks attractive , says UBS. With the healthcare business returning to double digit growth and mobile penetration accelerating, the firm says to look past the "market noise" and reiterates a buy on the shares. Separately, Craig Hallum ups the shares to Buy on valuation as well. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
