- Thursday, May 30, 11:37 AM Nuance's (NUAN +1.2%) latest acquisition is Tweedle Connect, developer of an in-car entertainment platform that aggregates/delivers popular apps and services such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, OpenTable, and Bing, for $80M in cash. Nuance plans to integrate Tweedle Connect, which counts Toyota/Lexus as a client, with its popular Dragon Drive voice command/text-to-speech platform, which has been adopted by a slew of top automakers. Nuance has acquired over three dozen companies since '06, and thirteen in the last two years. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 24, 11:47 AM Nuance (NUAN +4.6%) spikes as Dow Jones reports the company has hired Goldman to help find a buyer - there was a rumor along these lines two weeks ago. If true, look for Carl Icahn to take an active interest in the proceedings. 11.8% of Nuance's float was shorted as of March 28, but that was before Icahn disclosed his 9.3% stake. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 17, 1:20 PM Amazon (AMZN -2.3%) roundup: 1) Amazon has reportedly paid $26M to buy Evi, a British developer of a Siri alternative that users a proprietary natural language search engine and voice recognition tech licensed from Nuance (NUAN). If true, look for Evi's software to soon be bundled with Kindle hardware. 2) Amazon's Appstore for Android is now available in nearly 200 countries, including major emerging markets (the source of much of Android's growth) such as India, Brazil, and Mexico. 3) Amazon has filed a patent application for an anonymous mobile payments system; expect PayPal (EBAY) to take a close look. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Monday, April 8, 2:45 PM Speculation abounds regarding how Carl Icahn plans to leverage his new 9.3% stake in Nuance (NUAN -1.3%). Many think Icahn could push Nuance to sell its slow-growing document imaging ops to lower its $2.3B debt load; Deutsche believes the unit could fetch ~$400M. Some even see a full-blown sale of the company to Microsoft or IBM as a possibility. Regardless, many Nuance investors are likely to back Icahn should he make an activist push. "There’s been a lot of frustration over the balance sheet and performance," observes Mizuho's Joanna Makris. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, January 10, 1:58 PM Acquisition-loving Nuance (NUAN) has reportedly snapped up VirtuOz, a developer of virtual assistant services for sales/marketing/customer support workers - VirtuOz calls itself "Siri for the enterprise." Though Nuance is better known for its consumer solutions, its enterprise ops generate $330M/year in sales. The acquisition report comes in a week where Nuance made a slew of CES-related announcements, and outlined a vision for a voice assistant platform that would follow users across devices. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 8:20 AM Nuance Communications (NUAN) agrees to acquire Ditech Networks (DITC) for $1.45/share, a 79% premium to DITC's Monday closing price. NUAN says DITC's voice technologies will enhance its portfolio of mobile and enterprise voice offerings. NUAN +0.6% premarket, DITC halted. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 1:00 PM Nuance (NUAN +6.5%) rallies after stating it has no plans to make a bid for clinical transcription rival M*Modal (MODL -1.6%), which is set to be purchased by JPMorgan's P-E arm for $14/share. The weak Q2 report delivered yesterday by M*Modal could be a reason why. M*Modal had previously disclosed it turned down a $17/share offer from a competitor widely believed to be Nuance, due to timing and antitrust worries. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 2:03 PM M*Modal (MODL +3.2%), which has agreed to be sold to JPMorgan's P-E arm for $14/share, jumps after disclosing it received a $17/share offer from a competitor it refers to as "Party A," but turned it down due to uncertainty about timing and antitrust issues. There's a good chance the company is Nuance (NUAN -1%), which is already a giant in the clinical transcription space. M*Modal traded as high as $14.99, and is currently moving at $14.51. (previous) Comment! [Healthcare, Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 11:26 AM Nuance (NUAN +2.2%) trades higher following the purchase of rival clinical transcription/voice recognition solutions provider M*Modal (MODL) by JPMorgan's P-E arm. Deutsche (Buy) notes the deal's valuation (2x estimated FY13 sales) is in-line with the that paid by Nuance for recent acquisitions, and thinks it's evidence P-E firms are "becoming more active" in the medical transcription and records space. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 9:26 AM Nuance (NUAN) +2.8% after announcing its acquisition of Transcend Services (TRCR +39.6%), a provider of medical transcription and speech editing services. Nuance claims the all-cash deal will add $140M-$150M to FY13 revenue, and $0.08-$0.09 to EPS. Transcend's offerings, which are focused on small and mid-sized hospitals, will complement Nuance's existing voice recognition solutions for the healthcare market. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 8:04 AM Nuance Communications (NUAN) to buy Transcend Services (TRCR) for $29.50/share, or ~$300M. (PR) Comment! [M&A, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 11:02 AM Nuance Communications (NUAN +5%) acquires Vlingo, developer of the Virtual Assistant, which uses voice to text technology and intelligent voice interface processing, for an undisclosed sum. The company hopes to capitalize on explosive market demand for virtual assistant and voice-enabled capabilities spanning phones, tablets, cars, televisions, navigation devices, music players, PCs and more, and estimates market demand to be near $5B. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, October 24, 2011, 11:58 AM There are good reasons why Apple (AAPL +2.9%) may not make a play for Nuance (NUAN +2.6%): Apple doesn't make $8B acquisitions, and Nuance is in areas such as medical transcriptions that Apple doesn't want. But Mike Dawson thinks they'd be crazy not to try, since it could be worth it just to keep the speech recognition technology away from Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT). 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, October 7, 2011, 8:09 AM Voice recognition software provider Nuance (NUAN) is acquiring Swype, a developer of an innovative touchscreen keyboard solution for smartphones, for $102.5M. Michael Arrington calls himself "a big fan" of Swype. NUAN +1.5% premarket. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, July 14, 2011, 8:17 AM Voice recognition software firm Nuance (NUAN) is acquiring medical transcription services provider Webmedx for an undisclosed price. Nuance is also introducing a version of its Dragon software for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Shares +1.4% premarket. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]

sundate36: Guys, it doesn't bother you that insiders have been selling like mad recently? -
oneotherfool: It does now...JK. It's encouraging that, on the other hand, Icahn has upped his stake to 10.7% (from 9.3%) on April 30, right after the drop
