Wednesday, February 6, 9:56 AM The real deterrent to nuclear power: Plants burn through copious quantities of cash long before they consume even a pound of uranium. That handicap was laid bare yet again as Duke Energy (DUK) decided to retire its Crystal River plant in Florida, and Centrica pulled out of a new U.K. project. Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 5:41 PM The uranium business is still stuck in a rut more than 21 months after Fukushima, and there's little sign of a turnaround in 2013 as Japan's plans remain up in the air. Optimists point to long-term demand - 62 reactors under construction worldwide - and weak pricing and cost pressures that have ground many projects to a halt. Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 9:29 AM The price of uranium falls to $47/pound, the lowest in 2 years as a "wave of optimism" Japanese demand would bounce back or China would step in was misplaced. Low prices may bring high prices though as both BHP Billiton and Paladin Energy have slowed or postponed development of uranium mines even as nuclear reactors continue to be built. Comment! Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 10:01 AM Data for the construction of power generation facilities in H1 paints a stark picture of the ascendance of natural gas, with 3,708 MW gas-fired plants built, 2,367 MW of wind farms developed, and 1,608 MW of coal stations constructed. Gas provides 41.8% of U.S. electricity, coal 29.7%, nuclear 9.2%, water 8.7%, wind 4.3%, geothermal 0.3%, and solar 0.3%. Comment! [Energy]
Sunday, July 1, 2012, 5:20 AM The Senate confirmed on Friday geologist and environmental science professor Allison Macfarlane as Chairperson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to replace Gregory Jaczko. The issues Macfarlane has to deal with include new safety rules following the Japanese nuclear meltdown last year and aging reactors. Comment! [Energy]
