Beside the standard complaints that Intel (INTC) set up a system of "threats and rewards" with PC makers (DELL, HPQ, IBM), and designed compilers so that its own chips would perform better than its rivals', Wednesday's FTC suit also accuses Intel of trying to establish a monopoly in the market for graphics processors (GPUs), which sent shares of Nvidia (NVDA) soaring 8%. Also yesterday: INTC -2.1%. AMD +3.7%.

Nvidia (NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reveling in Intel's (INTC) failure to produce a consumer version of its much-touted, much-delayed multi-core graphics chip Larrabee. NVDA +11% premarket to $15.79. AMD +3.7% to $8.15.

Intel (INTC) kills plans to sell a consumer version of its much-touted, much-delayed multi-core graphics chip - Larrabee - which was supposed to to open a new front of competition with Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD), and says it will provide an update about future versions some time next year. Nvidia: "The fact that a company with Intel's technical prowess and financial resources has struggled so hard to succeed with parallel computing shows just how exceptionally difficult a challenge this is."

Nvidia (NVDA +2.1%) says the Patent and Trademark Office has initially rejected eight more Rambus patent claims related to graphics memory controllers, though Rambus (RMBS +1.3%) says this isn't over.

No longer just for movie screens, 3D is shifting to computers as chip and display makers target the small but profitable niche. Companies trying to get in on the move include Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM).
