- Monday, March 4, 2:42 AM As expected, Swiss voters have approved an "anti-fat cat" initiative that allows investors to hold binding votes every year on executive pay at listed companies, and enable them to block large payouts at the start and end of a manager's employment. Executives who break the new law could face hefty fines and up to three years in jail. 5 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories]
- Sunday, March 3, 3:47 AM The Swiss are voting in a referendum today on an "anti-fat cat" initiative that would allow investors to hold binding votes on executive pay at listed companies and allow them to block large payouts at the start or end of a manager's employment. The measure is expected to pass. Companies that will be affected include Novartis (NVS), Nestle, UBS, Credit Suisse (CS), ABB, Roche, Transocean (RIG) and Weatherford (WFT). 13 Comments [Financials, Healthcare, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, February 19, 7:31 AM Amid an uproar from shareholders, Novartis (NVS) cancels a plan to pay outgoing Chairman Daniel Vasella $78M. The cancellation also eliminates the noncompete agreement, leaving Dr. Vasella free to work where he chooses. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Sunday, February 17, 4:55 AM Novartis (NVS) Chairman Daniel Vasella will receive a six-year severance package of up to 72M Swiss francs ($78M) when he leaves the pharmaceutical company this month, as long as he doesn't start working for rivals. The agreement has further ignited strong feelings in Switzerland ahead of a March referendum over giving shareholders a say over executive compensation. 2 Comments [Healthcare]
- Thursday, January 31, 9:33 AM EU antitrust regulators send Johnson & Johnson (JNJ -0.1%) and Novartis (NVS -0.3%) a "statement of objections," or charge sheet, over a "co-promotion" deal they formulated that delayed the release of a generic competitor to J&J's painkiller fentanyl in Holland for 17 months in 2005-2006. The EU can levy fines of up to 10% of annual sales for anti-competitive behavior, although penalties are usually based on the revenues of the product involved. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, January 23, 11:11 AM Citigroup likes what it sees in Novartis' (NVS +3.6%) today, upgrading the European drug giant to Buy on the back of a solid quarter and significant management changes. Citi says the departure of Dr. Vasella could lead to shareholder friendly activity, including; a streamlining of the company's group structure, monetization of its Roche (RHHBY.PK stake and a possible re-initiation of its buyback program. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 4:06 AM More on Novartis (NVS) Q4: Chairman Daniel Vasella will resign and will be replaced by senior Bayer health-care executive Joerg Reinhardt, who was formerly COO at Novartis. Provides mid-term guidance for the first time, forecasting mid-single-digit percentage fall in core earnings this year; sales to be in line with 2012, excluding currency swings, although generic competition will eat into revenue by up to $3.5B. Sales growth to resume in 2014 and 2015. Comment! [Earnings, Healthcare]
- Wednesday, January 23, 4:04 AM More on Novartis (NVS) Q4: Adjusted profit +3% to $3.1B. Net profit +74% to $2.05B, below consensus of $2.38B. Last year was affected by writedowns. Pharmaceutical division sales flat at $8.3B, Diovan sales -25% to $992M after loss of patent protection. Shares +2.4% in Zurich. Comment! [Earnings, Healthcare]
- Wednesday, January 23, 3:42 AM Novartis AG (NVS): Q4 EPS of $1.27 may not be comparable to consensus of $1.31. Revenue of $14.8B (flat% Y/Y). - Tuesday, January 15, 6:08 AM Looking to offset a patent cliff that could cut sales by up to $2.75B this year, Pfizer (PFE) is among the companies reportedly interested in acquiring Agila Specialties, the injectable-medicines unit of India's Strides Arcolab. Novartis (NVS), Mylan (MYL) and Fresenius (APCVZ) have also been eyeing Agila, which produces cancer treatments and antibiotics, and could be valued at $2B. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Tuesday, January 8, 8:54 AM Novartis (NVS) CEO Joe Jimenez says the company may make bolt-on purchases of $2-4B but doesn't "need a big acquisition in the short term." Novartis is looking to buy assets to offset patent expirations, with Jimenez saying the firm wants to expand its generics business with respiratory and dermatology treatments, and injectable cancer therapies. The company won't sell its loss-making vaccines ops or other smaller units. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, January 2, 9:32 AM "The (pharmaceutical) industry needs to spend more money on R&D and less on sales and marketing, says Novartis (NVS +1.2%) CEO Joseph Jimenez. He also believes "that in the future, companies like Novartis are going to be paid on patient outcomes as opposed to selling the pill." However, Jimenez warns that price cuts, such as those in Europe, "create a disincentive for us to build sales force." Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, December 27, 2012, 3:45 PM A federal judge has ruled in favor of the FDA and dismissed Mylan's (MYL -0.5%) suit against the agency relating to it's decision to withhold approval for the company to sell a generic version of Novartis' (NVS +0.4%) heart drug Diovan. The court said the FDA had not acted “capriciously” when it denied MYL exclusivity to market its version, furthermore, the company failed to show it suffered “irreparable harm” as a result, Comment!
