- Monday, March 5, 2012, 9:58 AM Ratings for broadcast TV networks have fallen at a 1.8% annual rate since 1990, according to Bernstein, thanks to the impact of the Internet and cable networks. However, the networks still saw their ad revenue grow at a 3% annual clip, thanks to higher ad rates. Likewise, though newspaper ad revenue fell sharply from 2005-2010, overall TV ad revenue actually ticked higher, thanks to steady viewing levels. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, March 1, 2012, 4:05 PM With James Murdoch out of the way, speculation is growing that News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) will spin off its publishing arm. Wells Fargo estimates the business, which includes Dow Jones, Barron's, and the WSJ, would be worth $5.4B as a standalone business, even if no value is assigned to its scandal-ridden U.K. papers. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 9:17 AM James Murdoch resigns as News International (NWS) executive chairman, but will stay with News Corp., Rupert says, and will "focus on expanding international TV businesses." Comment! [Breaking News]
- Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 12:03 PM News Corp. (NWS +0.7%, NWSA +1.2%), struggling to deal with the fallout from its U.K. hacking/bribery scandal, says it will consider a new stock buyback plan to boost its "woefully undervalued" shares. The media giant says it will make a decision following the completion of an existing $5B buyback program, which thus far has been used to repurchase $2.7B in shares. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, February 27, 2012, 12:06 PM Journalists at Britain's Sun newspaper paid large sums of cash to corrupt public officials, aware the practice was criminal, a press ethics inquiry hears. The disclosure could damage News Corp. (NWSA +0.5%) if it gives ammunition to the FBI and other U.S. agencies that have stepped up their hunt for signs of illegality at Rupert Murdoch's media empire. (also) Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, February 16, 2012, 4:43 PM Television's traditional spring "upfront," when ads are sold in advance for the fall TV season, will be shaken up this year, as a contingent of GOOG, YHOO, AOL, MSFT, and Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS) plan to have their own upfront, WSJ reports. The group plans a series of presentations in April, hoping to grab part of the $9B taken in by traditional TV networks during upfront. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 16, 2012, 9:29 AM CBS (CBS -3.6%), looking to bolster tepid growth in its Entertainment division, mentioned during its Q4 earnings call that it's "talking to Netflix (NFLX) about a potential deal to produce a show for them." Along with its in-house production efforts, Netflix has already struck a deal with Twentieth Century Fox (NWS, NWSA) for the creation of new episodes of Arrested Development. (CBS Q4) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Sunday, February 12, 2012, 5:18 AM Rupert Murdoch is to fly to London for crisis talks following the arrest yesterday of five senior journalists who work for News Corp.'s (NWSA) best-selling Sun daily tabloid. The arrests are part of a probe into the corruption of public officials and follow the detention of four executives two weeks ago for allegedly bribing police. 2 Comments
- Friday, February 10, 2012, 4:55 PM Online video streaming services Netflix (NFLX) and Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS) are considering expanding their platforms to launch in Russia, according to a Russian newspaper. Hulu execs reportedly visited Moscow late last year and met with Russia’s leading film studios and video services, following a similar fact-finding mission by Netflix. 1 Comment [Tech, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 12:47 PM Vanguard fund managers will be paying close attention to today's earnings report due out from News Corp. (NWS -0.3%) with the disclosure that it holds a 5.03% stake in the company as part of the $1.6T in funds it invests for customers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 8:57 AM All but one of ~60 civil phone-hacking cases brought against News Corp. (NWSA) before an October court deadline won't proceed to trial because the company's U.K. tabloid newspaper unit has settled almost all of them. News Corp. has agreed to pay out ~$7.9M to resolve claims by hacking victims. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, February 6, 2012, 6:17 PM Disney (DIS) is in talks with Univision to create an English-language cable news channel that would launch before the November elections. Such a move would put Disney in direct competition with Time Warner (TWX), News Corp. (NWS, NWSA), and Comcast's (CMCSA) NBC unit in the intensely competitive cable news market. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 9:40 AM News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) is reportedly "in serious talks" to hire former Bloomberg CEO Lex Fenwick to run its Dow Jones unit (publisher of the WSJ). Former Dow Jones chief Les Hinton stepped down in July on account of News Corp.'s U.K. phone hacking scandal. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 6:32 AM Donald Yacktman, manager of the market-beating Yacktman Fund, sees good relative value in high-grade companies with predictable cash flows. Newscorp (NWS), Microsoft (MSFT) and Proctor & Gamble (PG) are among his favorites. (video) (submitted by Devon Shire) Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Monday, January 23, 2012, 2:58 AM News Corp. (NWS) may bid for Turkish media assets ATV and Sabah, sources say. Calik Holdings, which owns ATV and Sabah, has extended the deadline for preliminary bids until next week. The deal could bring in between $700M and $1B, or possibly higher if deep-pocketed bidders like News Corp. are involved in the sale. Comment! [Global & FX, M&A]
- Monday, January 16, 2012, 4:27 AM Hulu (co-owned by DIS, CMCSA, NWS) is pushing into original programming, hoping to steal more customers from Netflix (NFLX) with the debut of its first scripted show on Feb. 14. The company plans to raise more money to expand the venture, saying raising capital won't be a problem for the "very healthy business." 3 Comments [Consumer]
