    Oncology Conference Countdown: What Will Pharma and Biotech Companies Report? [view article]
    Dear Dr. Norman Lepoff,

    I am a retired Principal Biochemist and recognized expert in carbohydrate chemistry with 5 US Patents. I have worked out a novel anti-cancer therapy that I would like to discuss with you in private rather than in a public forum. Can you send me your private contact information for a confidential yet thorough discussion? I think that you will be impressed. I ultimately hope to obtain from you the names of contact individuals in oncological research, preferably at the big pharmaceutical houses.

    Thank you,
    Robert J. Mizerak

    Delcath Systems to Take on Onyx Pharma's Nexavar [view article]
    It was pointed out to me that there is a misspelling of PFE's drug referenced. The correct spelling is 'Sutent', if you notice the link in point 2 the spelling is correct, but in the article I, for whatever reason, threw in an extra 't'. Sorry for that. And please do not let that get in the way of the analysis.

    Also it was mentioned to me that Sutent does not compete with Nexavar in liver cancer as only Nexavar is approved for this indication. Yes this is true. But please understand the main point was to tie in Pfizer because of the use doxorubicin, not necessarily Sutent.

    Also I had a comment that Sutent has not shown in early trials as much promise for liver cancer as hoped. This is besides the point. In fact, according to this article - www.thehindubusinessli... - Pfizer is planning a phase III trail for liver cancer in Asia. I cannot confirm but I believe this will be testing Sutent (anyone know different please post). But even if true (that Sutent dies not work in liver cancer) this supports my analysis that the use of DOXO with Delcath PHP may draw PFE attention.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Very interesting observation.
    We will have to look into this more carefully. DCTH has dropped from the 4 range and there have been buyout rumors before.

    The question is, has management learned how to negotiate? If DCTH does not hire someone with the skills needed to make a deal, they could have the best innovation in the world yet never monetize it. If they do hire someone, then they have to learn not to interfere as well. Not kidding.

    Watch for another chance to get the AES PfC below $47.50. In the mean time own the common. They are all over the world. They just got spanked in Kazakstan or some other Stan on a power plant appropriation. See if the turds can keep it running? AES and BG Group the British energy conglomerate are in LNG power plants and projects all over the place. AES will rock. Add some of that preferred on price weakness to get some income stream in line with the common appreciation potential. The "C" is well past it's call date, so a purchase below the $50 par price means a good dividend with a great opportunity for capital gain. Reply

    Oncology Conference Countdown: What Will Pharma and Biotech Companies Report? [view article]
    Hi Mike, great article and idea for investors of biotech and pharma oncology stocks. We know big pharma has been looking at small biotechs with promising cancer vaccines. Looks like this one of a Phase I study I found from ASCO 2008 is not only safe (no grade 3 toxicity cases), but is the first peptide vaccine to exhibit such positive immuno responses even WITHOUT an adjuvant:

    Results of the first phase I clinical trial of the novel Ii-key hybrid preventive HER2/neu peptide (AE37) vaccine: United States Military Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Group Study I-03.
    Sub-category: Vaccines
    Category: Developmental Therapeutics: Immunotherapy
    Meeting: 2008 ASCO Annual Meeting

    "Results: All 15 patients completed the trial with no grade 3-5 local or systemic toxicities. Dose reductions occurred in 47% of patients for local reactions >100mm or grade 2 systemic toxicities. The second group (peptide=500mcg, GM-CSF=250mcg) all required dose reductions prompting peptide-only inoculations in the third group (peptide=1,000mcg, GM-CSF=0mcg). AE37, with and without GM-CSF, elicited dose-dependent immunologic responses in vitro and in vivo to both AE37 and AE36 albeit AE37 responses were more robust. Assessing both toxicities and immunologic responses, the hypothesized optimal biologic dose was determined as peptide=500mcg, GM-CSF=62.5mcg, in 6 monthly injections. Conclusions: The hybrid AE37 vaccine appears safe and well tolerated with minimal local or systemic toxicity if properly dosed. AE37 is capable of eliciting HER2/neu-specific immune responses, even without the use of an adjuvant.

    This trial represents the first human experience with the Ii-Key modification, and to our knowledge, AE37 is the first peptide-based cancer vaccine to show potency in the absence of an immunoadjuvant."

    www.abstract.asco.org/...

    AE37 vaccine is from Antigen Express- a wholly owned subsidary of (GNBT) Generex. This is now in a large Phase II with the USMCI. What do you think?

    I'd say CEGE has the best chance to be multi-bagger. I've been watching ISIS for quite some and may pick up some shares later this quarter. Reply

    I read your columns often and like what you write, that's why I posted here to ask for your opinion on CALM. Last Friday after 3pm, CALM had the following calls:
    20 vol 8941, Open Int 358;
    22.5 -8909-371;
    25-52748-2233 ,
    but by Monday morning, the Open interests are 288 for 20, 109 for 22.50 and 266 for 25.
    My question is what happened, something was done over the weekend, how????
    Here's more info on CALM, it has 13M shorts as of last Friday, the float is about 12M.
    Any idea? anyone has any comments?
