The purchase allows Emulex, whose core storage adapter card/switch business is sputtering, to expand into a sizable growth market. But there's plenty of competition, not least from Riverbed (RVBD), which offers its Cascade NPM hardware line and is about to buy NPM software leader Opnet (OPNT).
