- Monday, January 9, 2012, 9:32 AM Expectations for earnings season are falling fast, as analysts now see Q4 S&P 500 earnings growth at 7.2%, down by half from October. Alcoa (AA), which reports today, has been squeezed by tumbling aluminum prices and oversupply. TXN, ORCL and TGT have all cut forecasts. Banks could be coming off their worst year since 1938, and "2012 isn’t feeling much better,” Mike Mayo says. 4 Comments [U.S. Economy, Earnings]
- Friday, January 6, 2012, 2:20 PM CNBC reports that a judge rejected a request from Oracle (ORCL +1.5%) to immediately appeal the ruling that damages in a corporate theft trial against SAP should only be $272M, instead of the $1.3B a jury awarded last year. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 7:08 PM 2012 will be a "year of Linux domination," claims The 451 Group. The firm's survey of 165 server professionals found 67% saying they plan to increase their spending on Red Hat's (RHT) Linux offerings, and only 6% saying they plan to cut ther spending. By contrast, 55% say they plan to reduce their spending on Oracle's (ORCL) servers. Oracle's hardware revenue fell 14% Y/Y in its most recent quarter. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, December 29, 2011, 12:14 PM Former H-P CEO and current Oracle (ORCL) President Mark Hurd loses a court appeal in which he sought to keep confidential a letter that contained allegations of sexual harassment. The ruling means at least a partially redacted version of the letter concerning Hurd's relationship with a onetime H-P marketing contractor ultimately will be made public. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 27, 2011, 12:00 PM The hype surrounding "big data" has arguably gone too far in corporate IT circles, but that doesn't mean there aren't ways for major industry players to profit from the broader trend. SAP is already doing so through its Hana high-performance database, and EMC is joining in via its Greenplum subsidiary. Oracle (ORCL) stands to boost its big data exposure through its Exalytics hardware, and the analytics capabilities embedded into its Fusion cloud apps. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 27, 2011, 10:42 AM The USPTO strengthens Google's (GOOG) hand a little in its bitter patent dispute with Oracle (ORCL), throwing out a patent claim Oracle was asserting in its litigation (along with 16 others). Oracle, which is seeking $2B in damages from Google over Android's use of the Java programming language, has 6 months to appeal. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, December 22, 2011, 2:06 PM Salesforce.com (CRM) emerged as the world's second-largest CRM software vendor in 2011, claims IDC, thanks to a growth rate (22.6%) roughly twice that of the overall market (11%). Oracle (ORCL), SAP, and Nice Systems (NICE) also grew faster than the overall CRM market. Oracle, which is in the process of acquiring cloud CRM firm RightNow (RNOW), remained the market's top vendor, with a 13.2% share. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 5:40 PM Though most Oracle (ORCL -11.7%) observers attributed its FQ1 shortfall to IT spending weakness and a hardware transition, Canaccord's Richard Davis thinks it was also due to Oracle being "behind the curve" in cloud software. Davis, who's downgrading Oracle to Hold, thinks the company will only be able to catch up through heavy R&D and M&A spending, and recommends buying shares of rival CRM instead. - Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 10:56 AM Unsurprisingly, many enterprise IT names are getting clobbered thanks to Oracle's (ORCL -14.5%) FQ2 miss. Tibco (TIBX -13.5%), due to report after the close, is among the hardest hit, though other high-P/E software names are also off strongly. INFA -11.1%. CVLT -15.8%. CTXS -7.3%. CRM -7.2%. The pain also extends to rivals SAP (SAP -6.3%) and IBM (IBM -3.7%), and networking firms F5 (FFIV -7%) and Riverbed (RVBD -5.6%). (more on ORCL) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 9:55 AM Canaccord isn't appeased by Oracle's (ORCL -12.8%) explanations for its FQ2 shortfall; the firm is downgrading shares to Hold, arguing the company "needs to rebuild confidence" that it's not heading towards a Microsoft-level valuation over the next few years. However, Jefferies is staying bullish, noting Oracle's FQ3 EPS guidance of $0.55-$0.58 is in-line with a prior forecast of $0.57. (more) (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 8:54 AM Price targets for Oracle (ORCL) are being slashed (I, II) following its FQ2 bombshell (I, II, III), which is bound to raise fears of an IT spending slowdown. During its earnings call, Oracle partly blamed the weakness on "an increase in last-minute ... approvals" for large deals, as well as a chip transition for its server business. One silver lining: Oracle hinted Apple has become a major buyer of its costly Exadata systems. ORCL -10.7%. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 5:07 PM It looks as if Europe's troubles finally caught up to Oracle. A look at its FQ3 report reveals sales to EMEA region grew less than 1% Y/Y during the quarter, after increasing at a 14% clip in FQ1. Sales growth for the Americas also saw a decline - up only 2% in FQ2 compared with 8% in the prior quarter. Asia-Pac sales grew at a healthy 8% clip, but only accounted for 17% of revenue. ORCL -9.3% AH. (more) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 4:33 PM Some major enterprise software names are trading lower following Oracle's (ORCL) FQ2 miss (I, II). SAP -2.7%. CRM -1.4%. IBM -1.3%. HPQ -1.6%. Given Oracle's reputation as a "safe harbor" during times of macro weakness, concerns about slowing IT spending will likely be on many investors' minds tomorrow. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 4:20 PM More on Oracle's (ORCL) FQ2: New software license revenue up 2% Y/Y, down sharply from FQ1's 17% growth (.pdf). Software license update and product support revenue up 9%, down from FQ1's 16%. Hardware revenue fell 14%, worse than FQ1's 5%. Services revenue flat Y/Y, down from FQ1's 10% growth. Sales of high-end Exadata and Exalogic systems grew strongly. A new $5B stock buyback has been authorized. ORCL -7.7% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 4:07 PM Oracle (ORCL): FQ2 EPS of $0.54 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $8.8B (+2% Y/Y) misses by $500M. Shares -7.8% AH. (PR) 3 Comments [Earnings, Tech]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 11:08 AM When Oracle (ORCL +1.6%) delivers its FQ2 report today, investors may want to keep an eye on information provided about sales of high-end Exadata systems: JMP's checks suggest Oracle is pushing its sales team hard to move Exadata boxes. Meanwhile, Piper's survey of 41 Oracle partners indicated their FQ2 sales were only 1.5% above plan - a level that suggests decelerating growth. (yesterday) Comment! [Tech]

ORCL can go lower. Great entry at $26. Would rather own IBM but would have to be $175 and the Buffett premium won't let it get back to there - View all 2 replies
-
WisPokerGuy: Possible but long in the future. Company I work with has a $35 million cloud project on the table and Oracle isn't even being considered. -
WisPokerGuy: Yeah... I realize that. The point was that ORCL wasn't even in the running due to lack of mature products that matched up w/ CRM or SAP.

ORCL to announce March 20th. Think they go for 2-for-2 on missing earnings? Have to believe Ellison to competitive for that. - View all 1 replies
-
FortSumter: I tried to play earnings last time and got my ass handed to me. Lesson learned. That means this time it will go up. Cant win for losing.
