- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 12:10 AM Notable earnings after Tuesday's close: CTAS, JBL, NKE, ORCL, PAYX Comment! [Earnings]
- Monday, December 19, 2011, 3:07 PM Morgan Keegan joins Barclays in suggesting Oracle (ORCL -1.8%) will deliver a decent FQ2 report tomorrow. The firm says its checks indicate a "generally fine" quarter in spite of macro uncertainty, and it thinks Oracle's "rigid expense discipline" will result in operating margin and EPS figures "at or above management's guidance midpoint." Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, December 19, 2011, 1:22 PM IDC's Michael Fauscette gives a summary of some of the major cloud vendors, saying that based on recent acquisitions by Oracle (ORCL), SAP (SAP) and IBM (IBM), "cloud computing has moved past its tipping point." It wasn't so long ago that the major software vendors were "hardily poking fun at these very same 'targets'." Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 16, 2011, 4:39 PM Barclays reiterates an Overweight on Oracle (ORCL) ahead of Tuesday's FQ2 report. Echoing comments from Goldman, the firm thinks Oracle's business is "running on its own cycle," and it sees a large opportunity for the company to sell its Exadata and Exalogic systems to its installed base. Barclays also expects further cloud-related announcements from Oracle, following the RightNow acquisition. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 8, 2011, 3:55 PM EMC is further expanding the offerings of its Greenplum subsidiary, acquired last year, to target "big data" analytics applications. Its latest product, EMC Greenplum Chorus, provides collaboration tools that interact with Greenplum's database and analytics software. Greenplum has also rolled out analytics appliances that compete with Teradata (TDC), Oracle's (ORCL) Exadata gear, and IBM's Netezza division. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 3:17 PM Dell (DELL) announces it's expanding its partnership with Salesforce.com (CRM) to include the latter's Service Cloud customer support software offerings; Dell already resells Salesforce's bread-and-butter cloud sales software. The Service Cloud lineup competes with solutions from LivePerson (LPSN) and RightNow (RNOW - set to be acquired by ORCL). Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 2:12 PM Eddy Elfenbein breaks down Oracle (ORCL) and finds that it's "still a fairly inexpensive stock." Wall Street estimates ORCL's 2012 EPS at $2.52; at 15x, shares could reach $37.95 by the end of next year, a 19% rise from here which doesn’t consider that the company has a respectable track record of exceeding expectations. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 9:59 AM Taleo (TLEO) CEO Mike Gregoire, whose company's shares took off following SAP's purchase of rival SuccessFactors (SFSF), expresses skepticism about the former's ability to integrate the latter, particularly given SAP's limited success with cloud software thus far. As for speculation Oracle (ORCL) will make a bid for Taleo? "We don't comment on that kind of speculation. But a first year MBA student could connect the dots." Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, M&A]
- Monday, December 5, 2011, 9:09 AM Taleo (TLEO) +15.7% premarket after BMO Capital Markets upgrades shares and raises its target price to $40, following SAP's bid for Taleo rival SuccessFactors (SFSF). Investors will view Taleo as "the most obvious acquisition candidate and that Oracle is the most obvious buyer," but BMO also likes its low relative valuation and 20%-30% billings growth rate, on par with SFSF. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Saturday, December 3, 2011, 1:18 PM SAP announces it's acquiring cloud HR software provider SuccessFactors (SFSF) for $40/share in cash, or $3.4B. The price represents a 52% premium to SuccessFactors' Friday close. The deal comes 6 weeks after Oracle's (ORCL) deal to acquire cloud customer support software firm RightNow (RNOW), and a month after SAP said it was forming a plan to expand its cloud offerings. 12 Comments [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Saturday, December 3, 2011, 10:45 AM "We're at an inflection point in history," says Loews' (L) savvy investment chief Joe Rosenberg, comparing today's equity market to Treasuries in the early 80s when he had trouble convincing folks to buy long bonds yielding 15%. One favorite is Microsoft (MSFT), a better buy by every metric than a recent purchase of Warren Buffett's. Among his other picks: JNJ, MRK. A pan: Treasuries, "in the final throes of one of the greatest bubbles I have ever seen." 13 Comments [Quick Ideas, Tech, Consumer, Healthcare, U.S. Economy, Financials]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 2:47 PM More on Gartner's server data: IBM's revenue share fell 50 bps Y/Y to 29.7%, while H-P's (HPQ), hurt by collapsing Itanium sales, fell 270 bps to 29.3%. Dell's (DELL) share rose 20 bps to 14.7%. Oracle's (ORCL) share fell 30 bps to 5.9%, though this is a much smaller drop than Q2's 130 bps decline, and suggests the company's position might finally be stabilizing. (ORCL FQ2) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 2:46 PM Global server revenues grew 5.2% Y/Y in Q3, according to Gartner, well below Q2's 19.5% clip. While lower top-line growth was expected, given the Q2 impact of IBM's mainframe upgrade cycle, a decline in x86 server revenue growth to 9.3% from 17.7% implies a broader softening of demand, and is arguably unwelcome news for Intel (INTC). Western European sales fell 4.9%, while Asia-Pac shipments rose 23.9%. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 7:50 AM H-P (HPQ) is down 1.2% post-earnings (I, II); FQ4 results beat estimates, but FY12 guidance was soft. Weakness in high-margin areas such as printing supplies (-14% Y/Y) and high-end servers (-23%, thanks to ORCL's abandoning of Itanium) are weighing on EPS. Moreover, CC comments about "competitive pricing" and cost increases, to go with expected remarks about macro uncertainty, might be troubling investors. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 2:55 PM H-P's (HPQ) culture is nothing like the one Steve Jobs created at Apple (AAPL), says Rich Karlgaard. Nor is it anything like the win-at-all-costs culture frequent critic Larry Ellison created at Oracle (ORCL). Nonetheless, he thinks the "humane," engineering-focused culture established by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard can help foster a turnaround, should Meg Whitman embrace it. 5 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 3:03 PM With archrival Oracle (ORCL) releasing its Fusion cloud apps and acquiring cloud CRM firm RightNow (RNOW), SAP says it's forming a plan to expand its own offerings in the space. Though SAP has been gaining share against Oracle, its slow embrace of cloud software could prove a weakness: SAP's cloud business currently accounts for less than 1% of its annual revenue. 1 Comment [Tech]
