- Monday, February 4, 8:06 AM Oracle (ORCL) will buy Acme Packet (APKT) for $29.25 per share in a $1.7B transaction expected to close in the first half of the year. ORCL -2.0% premarket, APKT halted. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Breaking News]
- Friday, February 1, 11:19 AM Oracle (ORCL +1.5%) makes new 52-week highs after receiving an upgrade to Outperform from BMO's Karl Keirstad, who cites improving top-line growth. "Enterprise data software spending is improving after a rough 2012," he argues - recent earnings reports back this up to an extent - and Exadata system sales have grown to the point where they'll "have a discernible impact" on 2013 growth. Keirstad also sees further room for margin improvement. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 30, 10:57 AM Though VMware, EMC, and BMC Software's Q1 guidance hasn't exactly stoked enthusiasm about the IT spending environment, Gartner is forecasting global IT spending will grow a healthy 4.2% in 2013 to $3.7T, after rising just 1.2% last year. A re-accelerating China, a stabilizing Europe, and a resolution (for now) of the fiscal cliff drama are all seen lifting demand. Needham thinks growth could hit 5%. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:00 PM With shares nearly priced to perfection following a big 6-month rally, SAP (SAP -4.3%) is selling off after pre-announcing light operating income and revenue (€5.06B vs. €5.12B consensus) for Q4. The report does note Hana revenue surged to nearly €200M from Q3's €83M, but software license growth of 9% Y/Y is a slowdown from Q3's 17%. Cloud subscription/support revenue nearly doubled Q/Q to €159M, but is still just 3% of total sales. EMEA software sales +8%, Americas +3%, Asia-Pac +23%. Oracle recently claimed it took share from SAP in Europe. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, January 10, 4:03 PM SAP (SAP +2.9%) closes higher after announcing its core Business Suite ERP, CRM, and HR apps will now be supported by its popular Hana in-memory database. This significantly expands the addressable market for Hana, whose ability to enable real-time analytics and reporting for other SAP apps has already fueled blistering growth. Bernstein has predicted Hana support will also be extended to non-SAP apps. Oracle (ORCL) is trying to counter Hana via its costly Exadata X3 system. (more) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 2:25 PM The 17% Y/Y license revenue growth Oracle (ORCL) posted for FQ2 was fueled by a 56% increase in revenue from $3M+ transactions. That worries Macquarie's Brad Zelnick a little: though granting Oracle's acquisition spree makes bigger deals logical, he cautions they "tend to be lumpier, more difficult to comp over time, and can skew seasonal trends." Zelnick also asks if fiscal cliff worries led to a flurry of deal activity. Separately, an analytics software exec wonders if the Eloqua deal will fail due to clashing cultures. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, December 21, 2012, 9:42 AM Eloqua (ELOQ -0.4%) has only a 10% chance of receiving a bid that tops Oracle's (ORCL) $23.50/share offer, says Pac Crest. Shares closed at $23.66 yesterday, but are down to $23.51 in early trading. The firm thinks Eloqua rival Responsys (MKTG), customer reviews/engagement platform Bazzarvoice (BV), and video hosting/distribution platform Brightcove (BCOV) could also be M&A targets. (Salesforce) Comment! [Tech, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 6:33 PM Salesforce (CRM) might respond to Oracle-Eloqua by making a cloud marketing purchase of its own, thinks BMO's Karl Keirstead. He views the deal as a "modest net negative" for Salesforce, believing it will make it a little tougher to eat away at Oracle's (ORCL) traditional Siebel CRM software base. Startups Marketo and HubSpot are named as potential Salesforce targets - both compete with Eloqua, and would complement Salesforce's Marketing Cloud offerings. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 10:13 AM ExactTarget (ET +4.5%) is rallying on news of Oracle's (ORCL +0.3%) deal to acquire cloud marketing rival Eloqua (ELOQ +31.1%). Oracle's purchase comes a few months after it snapped up social media marketing plays Vitrue, Collective Intellect, and Involver. The purchase could allow Oracle to offer a more comprehensive marketing solution (for now, anyway) than Salesforce.com (CRM), which (relying on Buddy Media) recently launched its social media-focused Marketing Cloud suite. GigaOm notes Eloqua has 1,200 customers for Oracle to cross-sell to. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 8:07 AM Oracle (ORCL) purchases cloud marketing software provider Eloqua (ELOQ) for $23.50/share, about $871M. Eloqua shares are halted premarket. They closed last night at $17.92. (PR) Comment! [M&A, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 11:31 AM Some enterprise software names are rallying in the wake of Oracle's (ORCL +3.4%) FQ2 beat, which was fueled by strong software license sales. VMW +3.7%. WDAY +2.9%. SPLK +2.6%. INFA +2.2%. JIVE +3.5%. Also, Mellanox (MLNX +4.9%) is getting a lift from the strong performance of Oracle's engineered systems business. Oracle noted on its earnings call its app license growth was north of 30%. Goldman estimates total license growth received a 600 bps boost from acquisitions, but is still impressed. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 5:21 PM Oracle (ORCL) guides on its FQ2 call (webcast) for FQ3 revenue growth of 1%-5% Y/Y and EPS of $0.64-$0.68, in-line with a consensus for 4.3% growth and $0.66. New software license/cloud subscription growth is expected to be anywhere from 3%-13%, and hardware product sales flat to -10% (a decent improvement, though easier comps help). Engineered systems unit bookings rose 70% Q/Q, and Larry Ellison claims share was gained against SAP in Europe. Shares +1.8% AH. (FQ2 results: I, II) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 4:25 PM More on Oracle: Another $3B in buybacks lifted EPS. New software license/cloud subscription sales +17% Y/Y, a nice improvement from FQ1's +6%. License update/product support +7% (+3% prior). Hardware product sales still ugly at -23% (-24% prior). High-margin services revenue -5% (-6% prior). Opex -1%, below revenue growth of 3%. Headcount up by 1.3K to 117.2K. Americas sales +6% and Asia-Pac +8%, EMEA a weak spot, -2%. ORCL +1.7% AH. CC at 5PM ET (webcast), expect guidance and the usual Larry Ellison theatrics. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 4:22 PM Oracle (ORCL): FQ2 EPS of $0.64 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $9.09B (+3% Y/Y) beats by $60M. Shares +1.4% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 9:40 AM H-P (HPQ -0.6%) opens lower after Topeka's Brian White, best known for praising all things Apple, downgrades shares to Sell in response to their rally. H-P's product line issues, a weak IT spending environment, and Cisco and EMC's ambitions to become broader IT solutions providers are named as concerns. White also notes H-P's European exposure (EMEA was 36% of FQ4 sales), and says his firm believes "IT spending in the region has deteriorated further over the past few weeks." (yesterday) 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 7:58 AM Oracle (ORCL) is due to release its FQ2 results after the bell, with analysts expecting that EPS rose to $0.61 from $0.54 and that revenue edged up 2.5% to $9.03B, helped by a strong increase in software-license revenue. Pacific Crest Securities has "heard about more large deals than we have in the recent past," although JMP Securities says the "hardware business (Sun) in the U.S. may have again been light." Comment! Brian Benda: But the bottom line is that AAPL is the technology (and broad market) driving force right now. Like today, all major indices down but $NDX. -
Brian Benda: From broad market perspective, you can make good argument that outside of financials, AAPL controls the near-term fate of the market.

ORCL can go lower. Great entry at $26. Would rather own IBM but would have to be $175 and the Buffett premium won't let it get back to there - View all 2 replies
-
WisPokerGuy: Possible but long in the future. Company I work with has a $35 million cloud project on the table and Oracle isn't even being considered. -
WisPokerGuy: Yeah... I realize that. The point was that ORCL wasn't even in the running due to lack of mature products that matched up w/ CRM or SAP.
