- Friday, October 12, 2012, 3:09 AM Oracle (ORCL) CEO Larry Ellison is interested in acquiring AEG from Anschutz, which wants $10B for the sports and entertainment unit, Reuters reports. If true, Ellison has a sizable credit facility to help him, having pledged 139M Oracle shares - valued at $4.3B - as "collateral to secure personal indebtedness." 1 Comment [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, October 4, 2012, 7:10 PM This week's Oracle OpenWorld (ORCL) conference had 50K attendees, whereas Salesforce.com's (CRM) recent Dreamforce conference had 90K. That's one more reason observers are wondering if Salesforce and other cloud vendors are stealing Oracle's thunder, in spite of Oracle's efforts to keep up. "CIOs are feeling guilty if they don’t do anything around Salesforce," a Piper analyst wrote recently, while adding resellers have observed a "continuous talent flow of executives from Oracle to Salesforce." (also) 10 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 5:28 PM Though Oracle's (ORCL) hardware sales fell 19% Y/Y in the August quarter, Larry Ellison promises growth will be positive by the end of FY13 (next May), as strong demand for Oracle's costly "engineered" systems finally offsets plunging sales of everything it acquired from Sun. Still unknown, however, is when Ellison expects hardware sales to match what Sun was posting when Oracle bought the company for $7.4B. Mellanox (MLNX +4.7%) is heavily exposed to Oracle's engineered system sales. (new hardware) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 5:13 PM Ever aggressive with its pricing, Amazon Web Services (AMZN) has added its Relational Database Service to the list of services it offers for free for a year (subject to moderate usage limits). It might not be a coincidence Amazon's move comes shortly after Oracle (ORCL) announced a cloud infrastructure solution that includes a revamped, cloud-friendly Oracle database. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 4:53 PM Oracle (ORCL) isn't planning to acquire any large companies such as NetApp (NTAP - previous), Larry Ellison tells CNBC. However, he adds Oracle, which has been quite willing over the years to make big deals, is open to doing a major acquisition a "couple of years down the road." Ellison's company has had a busy week, making a slew of big product announcements (I, II, III) as the Oracle OpenWorld developer's conference continues. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 9:45 AM SAP appears on track to release a version of its Hana in-memory database software that supports non-SAP software, claims Barclays. That would greatly expand the market for Hana, whose performance has led Bernstein to forecast sales will grow to $750M this year and reach $4.4B in 2015. Yesterday, Oracle (ORCL) announced an upgrade for its Exadata line, which combines an in-memory database with powerful hardware. Larry Ellison boasted of huge performance gains, and (in typical fashion) dismissed Hana as "really small" by comparison. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 10:21 AM Nokia (NOK +5.2%) has reached a deal with Oracle (ORCL) to have it mapping and location services integrated with Oracle's business apps and data. Similar deals could be on the way, as corporate apps become more consumer-oriented and migrate to mobile devices. Nokia's Location & Commerce unit posted 4% Y/Y revenue growth in Q2, even as the phone division saw a 26% drop. But it still makes up only 4% of sales. (other maps deals: I, II) 15 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 9:18 AM "Oracle wants to be the Salesforce, Heroku, and Google, Microsoft, Amazon and HP of the cloud," says Jack Clark after taking in Larry Ellison's Oracle OpenWorld keynote, in which he promoted a soup-to-nuts cloud solution that features infrastructure and app development platforms to go with cloud apps, supporting both public and private cloud environments and running on Oracle's high-end hardware. Don't expect many Internet startups to abandon Amazon for Oracle (ORCL), but some enterprises looking to keep things simple could come knocking. (previous) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Sunday, September 30, 2012, 5:13 AM Larry Ellison is due to unveil 12c, the first new version of Oracle's (ORCL) flagship database platform in five years, at the company's OpenWorld conference, which kicks off today. The program is part of Oracle's attempts to make further inroads into cloud computing. Ellison will also introduce more high-end servers at the conference. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 2:32 PM IBM will reportedly unveil Project Sparta, a big data-focused addition to its new PureSystems hardware line, on Oct. 9. Details are scant, but the product sounds like a potential rival to Oracle's (ORCL) Big Data Appliance, a high-end system aimed at a booming market for solutions that analyze huge corporate datasets. Like Oracle's high-end hardware, IBM's PureSystems gear combines server, storage, and networking capabilities in one costly box. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 2:43 PM Some enterprise software stocks are posting moderate declines following Red Hat's (RHT -3.5%) FQ2 results and guidance. ORCL -2.2%. CTXS -1.7%. QLIK -2.3%. During its earnings call, Red Hat blamed its slightly weak guidance on slow growth for its training/services business. That could have some Oracle investors on edge, given the company's heavy dependence on license update and services revenue. Red Hat also boasted it renewed all of its 25 biggest deals up for renewal. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 5:38 AM Larry Ellison last year more than tripled the amount of Oracle (ORCL) shares that he "pledged as collateral to secure certain personal indebtedness, including various lines of credit." Ellison pledged 139M shares worth $4.5B vs. 40M shares in 2010 and the 1.1B shares he owns. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, September 24, 2012, 2:10 PM It's good to be Larry Ellison. Oracle (ORCL) discloses in its FY12 14-A that its CEO, whose net worth was recently pegged at $41B, received $96M in compensation during the company's last fiscal year. This includes $31.7M earned from exercising options priced at $21 or less (Oracle currently trades at $32.14), and the $1.5M Ellison spent on personal security. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 7:05 PM H-P (HPQ) is reportedly working on a system that will combine server, storage, and networking functionality in the same box. The system, which will run on Intel (INTC) CPUs (presumably Xeon), will compete with Oracle's integrated "engineered" systems, as well as IBM's PureSystems hardware and Cisco's UCS servers. H-P's gear is supposedly aimed at cloud deployments, but the might just be marketing talk, especially since many cloud service providers are opting for commodity servers. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 10:14 AM Weak top-line results and guidance aren't enough to keep Oracle (ORCL +1.8%) from trekking higher, as investors cheer the company's huge buybacks and decent software license growth. Mark Hurd used Oracle's earnings call to tout new customer wins for Oracle's high-end Exalogic and Exadata systems, but paid no heed to the weak sales seen for cheaper gear. Larry Ellison bragged Oracle continues to take database share from IBM and Microsoft, and predicts new sales investments will pay off in the coming quarters. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 5:43 PM Oracle (ORCL) guides on its FQ1 earnings call (webcast) for EPS of $0.59-$0.63, in-line with a $0.61 consensus. But revenue is expected to be flat to up 4% Y/Y, below a 4.7% consensus - the company is clearly depending on buybacks and cost controls to meet EPS estimates. New software license/cloud subscription revenue is expected to be up 5%-15%, while hardware revenue is expected to fall another 8%-18%. Shares are virtually changed AH. (FQ1 results: I, II) Comment! XRTrader: Exactly James - AAPL can add 3-5% EPS growth per year by buying back shares, on top of whatever growth they experience naturally. -
mitrado: ... and if AAPL buyback plan is as effective as HPQ's, will we be looking at AAPL around $50 a share in 2 years?
