- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 4:26 PM More on Oracle's FQ1: $3.1B worth of shares repurchased, big reason EPS met forecasts. Software licenses +6% Y/Y (+7% in FQ4). License update/support revenue +3%. But hardware was ugly again, with product revenue down 24% Y/Y (worse than FQ4's -16%) even as sales of high-end "engineered" systems doubled. Sales/marketing expenses -5%, but R&D +14%. Deferred revenue rose to $8.3B from FQ4's $7B, likely helped by a cloud business approaching a $1B run rate. ORCL -0.6% AH. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 4:12 PM Oracle (ORCL): FQ1 EPS of $0.53 in-line. Revenue of $8.18B (-2% Y/Y) misses by $240M. Shares +0.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 7:51 AM Tech bellwether Oracle (ORCL) is due to release its FQ1 results after the bell today, with analysts expecting that EPS rose to $0.53 from $0.48, while revenue edged up 0.3% to $8.42B. Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund reckons Oracle could spring a pleasant surprise in its forecast for FQ2, with the firm's projections for new software licenses a key metric. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]

- Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 10:50 AM As expected, Salesforce.com (CRM) kicks off its Dreamforce conference by announcing several new products. Among them: an enterprise cloud storage platform called Chatterbox (competes with Dropbox and Box); a cloud employee performance solution called Work.com (competes with CSOD); and Marketing Cloud, a suite that ties together solutions from Buddy Media and Radian6 (competes with ORCL). Salesforce is also giving its Chatter enterprise social networking solution (competes with JIVE) a major overhaul. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, September 17, 2012, 7:02 PM A July E.U. court ruling sanctioning the re-sale of software licenses could damage the European sales of enterprise software vendors such as Microsoft (MSFT), Oracle (ORCL), and SAP, as cost-sensitive companies opt for second-hand "copies" selling at a 30%-70% discount. Germany's UsedSoft, the winning party in the E.U. ruling, says it has seen demand triple since the decision was made. Most U.S. software contracts forbid the re-sale of licenses. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, September 17, 2012, 4:37 PM Oracle (ORCL) is acquiring SelectMinds, a developer of cloud apps for recruiting talent via referrals and social connections, and handling relationship with ex-employees. SelectMinds' software joins an arsenal of Oracle cloud HR solutions that includes its Fusion apps and Taleo. Remaining independent cloud talent management vendors include CSOD, SABA, and ULTI. (IBM-Kenexa) (SAP-SuccessFactors) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, September 17, 2012, 2:30 PM Lazard is raising its estimates on Oracle (ORCL) ahead of Thursday's FQ1 report: the firm is predicting a modest earnings beat, and sees favorable trends for enterprise software giant. Oracle has steadily rallied over the last few months, thanks to hopes that earlier fears of a major slowdown in IT spending were overblown. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 11:46 AM Mellanox (MLNX +3.0%) has been approached several times by potential acquirers, claims CEO Eyal Waldman, but the company prefers to remain independent. Waldman adds Mellanox has a "gentleman's agreement" with #1 customer Oracle (ORCL) that the latter won't add to its 10% stake, whose value has increased considerably, and claims Mellanox's InfiniBand solutions won't see serious competition from rivals such as Intel for at least 3 years. Others are more concerned. (CFO retirement). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 9:41 AM Oracle (ORCL) will continue supporting H-P (HPQ) servers running on Intel's (INTC) Itanium CPUs after a judge ordered the database giant to do so in early August. Oracle says its Itanium software will be released on the same schedule as software for IBM's high-end Power CPUs. Thanks largely to Itanium's share losses, H-P's Business Critical Systems unit saw a 16% Y/Y sales drop in FQ3. H-P has already shifted it high-end server R&D focus away from "Itanic" to Intel's Xeon CPUs. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 8:39 AM Oracle (ORCL) has launched an appeal in a lawsuit over accusations that SAP unit (SAP) TomorrowNow wrongfully downloaded millions of Oracle files. Last month, SAP agreed to pay Oracle $306M in damages "to save the time and expense" of a new trial," as the rivals' lawyers put it. However, a jury had originally awarded $1.3B to Oracle in a verdict that was later voided by a judge. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 6:19 PM Cloud ERP and HR software firm Workday, which used the JOBS Act to quietly file for an IPO in July, has finally provided an S-1. The company, which wants to raise up to $400M and will use the symbol WDAY, posted revenue of $119.5M (+118% Y/Y) in the 6 months ending July 31, and a net loss of $46.9M. Deferred revenue totaled $247.5M as of July's end. The white-hot market for enterprise tech IPOs suggests Workday should get a favorable reception, though its offering comes at a time when Oracle and SAP are encroaching on its turf. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 7:08 PM Oracle (ORCL) accidentally leaks a presentation that details plans for its new Fusion cloud HR solutions, as well as for recently-acquired Taleo. Taleo's pricing, called "amazingly affordable" by BI, will range from $1-$15/user/month, depending on features. Oracle also says it wants to grow Taleo by expanding internationally and targeting staffing service firms, and differentiate itself by offering an end-to-end HR solution. The leak comes two days after IBM announced it's buying Taleo rival Kenexa. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 6:34 PM Global server sales declined 2.9% Y/Y in Q2, per Gartner - that's worse than Q1's 1.8% fall, and evidence demand is soft even as hard drive supplies improve. Sales of x86 (INTC) servers rose 5.6%, but those of non-x86 Unix servers fell 17.9% - that's a big reason Oracle's (ORCL) share fell 110 bps Y/Y to 6%. Dell (DELL), which exclusively sells x86 gear, saw its share rise 120 bps Y/Y 15.4%, while H-P and IBM saw modest drops. Non-top-5 vendors saw their share reach 18.4%, as Internet companies continue opting for a do-it-yourself approach. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:34 AM More on IBM-Kenexa: The acquisition is notable given IBM, a major provider of "infrastructure" software such as databases, systems management, and middleware, has tread cautiously in application software, out of fear of disturbing partnerships. Not everyone expected Big Blue to respond to SAP and Oracle's cloud HR moves in kind. The Kenexa deal speaks of the growth opportunity IBM sees in cloud application software, and the increasing willingness of IT giants to step on each others' toes to pursue growth. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
