- Monday, March 25, 10:35 AM Oracle (ORCL -1.2%) is acquiring telecom signaling/policy control software leader Tekelec for an undisclosed sum. Look for the price to be higher than the $780M a consortium recently paid for the company. Tekelec's software, used by over 300 carriers, complements Oracle's communications software and Acme Packet's VoIP infrastructure hardware/software, and helps address the need for more advanced policy management tools to handle surging mobile data traffic. Larry Ellison recently suggested more telecom acquisitions are on the way. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 20, 4:32 PM Blackstone is "seriously considering a bid" for Dell (DELL), Fortune reports, and is forming "contingency plans" for new leadership in the event Michael Dell remains committed to Silver Lake. Oracle (ORCL) second-in-command and former H-P CEO Mark Hurd is said to be a top choice. Dell +0.4% AH to $14.38. (previous) 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 13, 12:32 PM Oracle (ORCL +0.5%) acquires Nimbula, a developer of software for managing private clouds. The purchase gives Oracle some technology and talent as it tries to develop a soup-to-nuts cloud solution for enterprises, and in doing so take on Microsoft, VMware, Amazon, and the OpenStack consortium. GigaOm's Derrick Harris likes the move, given Oracle's current private cloud strategy "seems hinged on selling big, expensive, over-engineered systems with some legacy Sun Microsystems and Oracle software cobbled together." 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, February 4, 9:22 AM More on Oracle/Acme Packet: The purchase of Acme, whose session border controllers shuffle VoIP traffic between networks, makes Oracle a telecom equipment firm. While Oracle sells plenty of software, servers, and storage to service providers, it hasn't yet made such a direct foray into infrastructure gear. However, Acme's solutions are differentiated by its Net-Net OS and other software, which arguably complement Oracle's service management and unified communications offerings for telcos and enterprises. ORCL -1.2%. APKT +22.9% to $29.42, slightly above the buyout price. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, February 4, 8:06 AM Oracle (ORCL) will buy Acme Packet (APKT) for $29.25 per share in a $1.7B transaction expected to close in the first half of the year. ORCL -2.0% premarket, APKT halted. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Breaking News]
- Friday, December 21, 2012, 9:42 AM Eloqua (ELOQ -0.4%) has only a 10% chance of receiving a bid that tops Oracle's (ORCL) $23.50/share offer, says Pac Crest. Shares closed at $23.66 yesterday, but are down to $23.51 in early trading. The firm thinks Eloqua rival Responsys (MKTG), customer reviews/engagement platform Bazzarvoice (BV), and video hosting/distribution platform Brightcove (BCOV) could also be M&A targets. (Salesforce) Comment! [Tech, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 6:33 PM Salesforce (CRM) might respond to Oracle-Eloqua by making a cloud marketing purchase of its own, thinks BMO's Karl Keirstead. He views the deal as a "modest net negative" for Salesforce, believing it will make it a little tougher to eat away at Oracle's (ORCL) traditional Siebel CRM software base. Startups Marketo and HubSpot are named as potential Salesforce targets - both compete with Eloqua, and would complement Salesforce's Marketing Cloud offerings. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 10:13 AM ExactTarget (ET +4.5%) is rallying on news of Oracle's (ORCL +0.3%) deal to acquire cloud marketing rival Eloqua (ELOQ +31.1%). Oracle's purchase comes a few months after it snapped up social media marketing plays Vitrue, Collective Intellect, and Involver. The purchase could allow Oracle to offer a more comprehensive marketing solution (for now, anyway) than Salesforce.com (CRM), which (relying on Buddy Media) recently launched its social media-focused Marketing Cloud suite. GigaOm notes Eloqua has 1,200 customers for Oracle to cross-sell to. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 8:07 AM Oracle (ORCL) purchases cloud marketing software provider Eloqua (ELOQ) for $23.50/share, about $871M. Eloqua shares are halted premarket. They closed last night at $17.92. (PR) Comment! [M&A, Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 10:54 AM Oracle (ORCL) remains as acquisition-hungry as ever. Its latest target is DataRaker, developer of a "cloud-based analytics platform" (two buzzwords in there) for utilities trying to leverage big data (another buzzword) with the help of information from smart meters. IBM has also bet big on utility analytics, via its Smart Grid and IOC businesses. Separately, Oracle has announced an update to its RightNow cloud customer support platform, which competes with Salesforce's Service Cloud. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 9:37 AM Oracle (ORCL) is buying Instantis, a developer of on-premise (non-cloud) portfolio project management software. Instantis' software will be integrated with Oracle's Primavera and (cloud-based) Fusion project management.apps. In July, Oracle bought cloud project management firm Skire. Microsoft and SAP also compete in this space. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, October 12, 2012, 3:09 AM Oracle (ORCL) CEO Larry Ellison is interested in acquiring AEG from Anschutz, which wants $10B for the sports and entertainment unit, Reuters reports. If true, Ellison has a sizable credit facility to help him, having pledged 139M Oracle shares - valued at $4.3B - as "collateral to secure personal indebtedness." 1 Comment [Consumer, M&A]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 4:53 PM Oracle (ORCL) isn't planning to acquire any large companies such as NetApp (NTAP - previous), Larry Ellison tells CNBC. However, he adds Oracle, which has been quite willing over the years to make big deals, is open to doing a major acquisition a "couple of years down the road." Ellison's company has had a busy week, making a slew of big product announcements (I, II, III) as the Oracle OpenWorld developer's conference continues. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, September 17, 2012, 4:37 PM Oracle (ORCL) is acquiring SelectMinds, a developer of cloud apps for recruiting talent via referrals and social connections, and handling relationship with ex-employees. SelectMinds' software joins an arsenal of Oracle cloud HR solutions that includes its Fusion apps and Taleo. Remaining independent cloud talent management vendors include CSOD, SABA, and ULTI. (IBM-Kenexa) (SAP-SuccessFactors) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 11:46 AM Mellanox (MLNX +3.0%) has been approached several times by potential acquirers, claims CEO Eyal Waldman, but the company prefers to remain independent. Waldman adds Mellanox has a "gentleman's agreement" with #1 customer Oracle (ORCL) that the latter won't add to its 10% stake, whose value has increased considerably, and claims Mellanox's InfiniBand solutions won't see serious competition from rivals such as Intel for at least 3 years. Others are more concerned. (CFO retirement). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:34 AM More on IBM-Kenexa: The acquisition is notable given IBM, a major provider of "infrastructure" software such as databases, systems management, and middleware, has tread cautiously in application software, out of fear of disturbing partnerships. Not everyone expected Big Blue to respond to SAP and Oracle's cloud HR moves in kind. The Kenexa deal speaks of the growth opportunity IBM sees in cloud application software, and the increasing willingness of IT giants to step on each others' toes to pursue growth. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
