- Thursday, May 16, 12:16 PM Cisco JV partner EMC (EMC +4.5%) joins the list of companies rallying in response to Cisco's FQ3 beat and guidance. Cisco mentioned on its earnings call integrated hardware solutions such as Vblock (offered by the Cisco/EMC VCE JV) are driving demand for its UCS servers - Cisco's UCS unit saw 77% Y/Y rev. growth. All in all, it's a good day for enterprise IT names, who are happy to receive some good earnings news after getting plenty of bad news (I, II, III, IV). HPQ +1.7%. IBM +1.3%. ORCL +1.3%. VMW +2.6%. TIBX +4.1%. CTXS +3.9%. CRM +3.8%. JIVE +4.1%. NTGR +2.7%. CVLT +2.6%. INFA +3%. (others rallying: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:39 AM Evercore and CLSA have downgraded Oracle (ORCL -8.8%) following its FQ3 miss and light top-line guidance. The numbers have many worried about the impact of cloud apps ... and not just on application software sales. "As customers move to the cloud, you get a lot of the functionality consolidated ... so you need less hardware and less databases and middleware," says Pac Crest. UBS is still bullish: "Historically when they have a miss it’s a great time to buy." Interestingly, cloud rivals are higher - WDAY +1.4%, CRM +0.4%, N +1.2% - even as other peers follow the tech sector lower. IBM -1.6%. INFA -1.6%. RHT -1.1%. After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: FSYS +3%. JKS +2%. HLF +2%. GEVO +2%. CIM +2%.
After-hours top losers: GMO -16%. TLYS -10%. TUMI -10%. ORCL -7%. GES -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, March 20, 4:02 PM Oracle (ORCL): FQ3 EPS of $0.65 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $9B misses by $0.4B. Shares -5.5% AH. (PR) 6 Comments [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:00 PM With shares nearly priced to perfection following a big 6-month rally, SAP (SAP -4.3%) is selling off after pre-announcing light operating income and revenue (€5.06B vs. €5.12B consensus) for Q4. The report does note Hana revenue surged to nearly €200M from Q3's €83M, but software license growth of 9% Y/Y is a slowdown from Q3's 17%. Cloud subscription/support revenue nearly doubled Q/Q to €159M, but is still just 3% of total sales. EMEA software sales +8%, Americas +3%, Asia-Pac +23%. Oracle recently claimed it took share from SAP in Europe. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, January 10, 4:03 PM SAP (SAP +2.9%) closes higher after announcing its core Business Suite ERP, CRM, and HR apps will now be supported by its popular Hana in-memory database. This significantly expands the addressable market for Hana, whose ability to enable real-time analytics and reporting for other SAP apps has already fueled blistering growth. Bernstein has predicted Hana support will also be extended to non-SAP apps. Oracle (ORCL) is trying to counter Hana via its costly Exadata X3 system. (more) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 10:13 AM ExactTarget (ET +4.5%) is rallying on news of Oracle's (ORCL +0.3%) deal to acquire cloud marketing rival Eloqua (ELOQ +31.1%). Oracle's purchase comes a few months after it snapped up social media marketing plays Vitrue, Collective Intellect, and Involver. The purchase could allow Oracle to offer a more comprehensive marketing solution (for now, anyway) than Salesforce.com (CRM), which (relying on Buddy Media) recently launched its social media-focused Marketing Cloud suite. GigaOm notes Eloqua has 1,200 customers for Oracle to cross-sell to. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 8:07 AM Oracle (ORCL) purchases cloud marketing software provider Eloqua (ELOQ) for $23.50/share, about $871M. Eloqua shares are halted premarket. They closed last night at $17.92. (PR) Comment! [M&A, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 11:31 AM Some enterprise software names are rallying in the wake of Oracle's (ORCL +3.4%) FQ2 beat, which was fueled by strong software license sales. VMW +3.7%. WDAY +2.9%. SPLK +2.6%. INFA +2.2%. JIVE +3.5%. Also, Mellanox (MLNX +4.9%) is getting a lift from the strong performance of Oracle's engineered systems business. Oracle noted on its earnings call its app license growth was north of 30%. Goldman estimates total license growth received a 600 bps boost from acquisitions, but is still impressed. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 2:26 PM BofA/Merrill has downgraded Tibco (TIBX -20.1%) to Neutral following its FQ4 warning, which has led shares to plunge to new 52-week lows. Piper sees the warning as another sign of "pervasively deteriorating conditions for on-premise software companies." The Street seems to agree a bit: QLIK -4.2%. INFA -5%. ORCL -1.8%. RHT -1.4%. CTXS -1.7%. Wedbush argues Tibco's long-term growth story is intact - Tibco noted in its warning demand for its Spotfire analytics platform remains strong. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 5:01 PM Tibco (TIBX) -14.7% AH after warning it expects to report FQ4 (ended Nov. 30) revenue of $292M-$295M and EPS of $0.37-$0.38, below a consensus of $316M and $0.44. Tibco blames a mix of soft government spending, Sandy-related deal delays, and poor execution in its infrastructure (i.e. middleware) business, particularly in the Americas. The FQ4 report arrives on Dec. 20. It could be a rough day for enterprise software stocks tomorrow: QLIK -3.7%. PRGS -1.4%. RHT -2.3%. INFA -1.1%. CTXS -1%. ORCL -0.9%. SAP -0.8%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 12:18 PM SAP (SAP +2.9%) is closing on its 52-week high after receiving an upgrade to Outperform from William Blair. The firm argues SAP is benefiting from acquisitions, new innovations, end-to-end product suites, and strong demand for its Hana in-memory database. SAP's sales growth has easily outpaced that of archrival Oracle (ORCL) in recent quarters. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 5:49 PM Mellanox (MLNX) -28.7% AH after guiding on its Q3 earnings call for Q4 revenue of $145M-$150M, below a $153.1M consensus. The InfiniBand switch/adapter card vendor had little margin for error after a huge 2012 run-up left it with steep multiples. Intel mentioned yesterday demand had weakened for high-end server CPUs, which Mellanox's products are often used with. The guidance could have some negative implications for Oracle's (ORCL) engineered system sales. (previous) 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 2:43 PM Some enterprise software stocks are posting moderate declines following Red Hat's (RHT -3.5%) FQ2 results and guidance. ORCL -2.2%. CTXS -1.7%. QLIK -2.3%. During its earnings call, Red Hat blamed its slightly weak guidance on slow growth for its training/services business. That could have some Oracle investors on edge, given the company's heavy dependence on license update and services revenue. Red Hat also boasted it renewed all of its 25 biggest deals up for renewal. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 11:46 AM Mellanox (MLNX +3.0%) has been approached several times by potential acquirers, claims CEO Eyal Waldman, but the company prefers to remain independent. Waldman adds Mellanox has a "gentleman's agreement" with #1 customer Oracle (ORCL) that the latter won't add to its 10% stake, whose value has increased considerably, and claims Mellanox's InfiniBand solutions won't see serious competition from rivals such as Intel for at least 3 years. Others are more concerned. (CFO retirement). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
