Gastric surgery helps people lose weight by shrinking the size of the stomach and making it tougher to absorb calories, now scientists think it may also adjust gastrointestinal bacteria, contributing to weight loss and raising the possibility for less-drastic obesity treatment. 7 Comments [Healthcare]
Thursday, March 14, 3:30 PM Shares of Orexigen (OREX -4.8%) slip deeper into the red today after it reported a Q4 that beat on a per share basis, but came up short on revenue. The company reported a loss of $0.41 per share, versus the consensus of a $0.44 per share loss. Revenues were $857K, below analyst estimates of $890K. Total operating expenses were significantly higher for the quarter, coming in at $33.3M compared to $5.2M in Q411, reflecting higher R&D expenses associated with the conduct of its Contrave cardiovascular outcomes trial. Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 1:06 PM Orexigen Therapeutics (OREX -2.6%) has completed the screening of new patients for its Light Study trial to evaluate its obesity drug Contrave. About 9K patients will be randomized in the study within the next few weeks. Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 10:40 AM Weight loss drug makers get a lift today after Aetna (AET -0.6%) revises its criteria under which the insurer considers weight reduction medications as "medically necessary" for treatment of obesity. In a Clinical Policy Bulletin revision dated yesterday, AET identified certain medications that have been approved by the FDA for weight reduction which would be covered under its policy: Qsymia, marketed by VIVUS (VVUS +13.2%), Belviq from Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA +2.9%), Didrex from Pfizer (PFE +0.1%), Xenical from Roche (RHHBY +0.3) and GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK +0.2%) Alli. The FDA rejected the drug in January 2011, due to possible heart problems, and asked Orexigen to conduct another study.
