- Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 11:16 AM Manufacturing issues or not, Apple (AAPL +0.7%) has raised calendar Q4 iPhone 5 build orders to 60M-65M units from a prior 55M-60M, thinks Jefferies' Peter Misek - if true, that's a positive for component suppliers such as CRUS, OVTI, QCOM, BRCM, SWKS, and TQNT. Misek, who adds iPhone 5 lead time remain at 3-4 weeks in the 31 countries where it's available, continues to expect 55M iPhones will be shipped this quarter. 3 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 12:39 PM Some Asian iPad Mini (AAPL) component suppliers have received orders to provide over 10M units in Q4, the WSJ reports. The paper reported last week the tablet had entered production, while Digitimes and Topeka Capital claimed production has been hampered by yield issues. The WSJ report is arguably a positive for likely iPad Mini suppliers, such as CRUS, OVTI, and BRCM. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 9:45 AM TSMC (TSM) is receiving follow-up orders from iPhone 5 (AAPL) suppliers thanks to stronger-than-expected demand, Digitimes reports. With many expecting 50M or more iPhone 5 sales by year's end, monthly chip shipments are now expected to total 10M-15M from September to November. Among the iPhone 5 suppliers relying on TSMC: QCOM, BRCM, OVTI, CRUS. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 4:02 PM While several Apple suppliers rallied following the release of iPhone 5 teardowns, Cirrus Logic (CRUS -3.3%) wasn't one of them. The teardowns revealed a Cirrus audio codec chip, but this was widely expected, and it isn't clear whether expectations of higher dollar content have panned out. OmniVision (OVTI -1.3%) is also closing lower after Chipworks' teardown revealed a Sony (SNE) image sensor is powering the iPhone 5's rear camera, though an OmniVision sensor is powering the front camera. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 10:59 AM OmniVision (OVTI -2.6%) and RF Micro Devices (RFMD -3.5%) are two more names selling off in response to Skyworks' (SWKS -8.1%) underwhelming FQ4 guidance hike. The fact companies such as OmniVision and Cirrus Logic (Apple suppliers, but not RF chipmakers) are lower following the update suggests some investors are using the news to book profits on the iPhone 5 component trade. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, September 14, 2012, 10:11 AM Apple (AAPL +1.7%) and its suppliers are outperforming after the iPhone 5's initial stock apparently sold out less than an hour after pre-orders began. CRUS +7.1%. SWKS +2.6%. OVTI +1.9%. TQNT +4.3%. BRCM +1.7%. Thus far at least, the situation bears a resemblance to the 4S launch, with criticism about an "incremental" upgrade and other issues failing to prevent huge sales from occurring. And the iPhone 5 is definitely a bigger upgrade than the 4S. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 1:46 PM Some more iPhone 5 features: A better rear camera sporting a sapphire lens cover and revamped image processing; a 1080p FaceTime camera; a smaller "lightning" dock connector; improved battery life and Wi-Fi performance; wideband audio playback; and 3 microphones to improve call quality (might be why ADNC was kicked out). Apple (AAPL +0.7%) is slightly higher. Suppliers are up moderately: OVTI +1.9%. CRUS +2.5%. BRCM +1.9%. SNDK +1.8%. (live blog) (more) 5 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, September 7, 2012, 5:02 PM STMicroelectronics (STM) is partnering with Taiwanese foundry UMC to develop image sensors using backside illumination (BSI) tech, which provides image quality advantages over traditional front-side illumination sensors. This could provide some fresh competition for OmniVision (OVTI), which is widely believed to be supplying a BSI sensor for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4S uses a Sony (SNE) BSI sensor. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 6:45 PM "With OVTI, one can definitely see the good and bad side of winning Apple’s business," remarks Williams Financial's Cody Acree, as he discusses OmniVision's (OVTI +2.1%) October quarter guidance for huge sales and record-low gross margins. Apple's enormous orders are accompanied by demands for cutting-edge parts that haven't been cost-optimized, hence the margin hit. Qualcomm (QCOM) and Cirrus Logic (CRUS) may be dealing with similar problems (I, II). (OVTI transcript) Comment! [Tech]

[On the Move] - Thursday, August 30, 2012, 6:00 PM OmniVision (OVTI) says on its earnings call that it doesn't expect the high manufacturing costs it blames for a weak FQ1 gross margin to go down in the near-term. But analysts aren't appeased. The company is about to see a huge uptick in Apple-related orders, and there are bound to be concerns, Apple, known for driving a hard bargain with suppliers, did so with OmniVision. But orders are orders - shares remain up 9.4% AH thanks to OmniVision's strong revenue guidance. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 4:55 PM More on OmniVision's FQ1: The EPS miss was due to a 340 bps Q/Q drop in gross margin to 19.1%, blamed on higher shipments of "advanced products" (BSI-2 sensors?) that had high manufacturing costs. FQ2 guidance is for revenue of $355M-$390M and EPS of $0.21-$0.37 vs. a consensus of $268.6M and $0.33. The EPS guidance suggests margins remain pressured, but the revenue guidance indicates huge orders and multiple design wins for new Apple products. OVTI +7.4% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 4:23 PM OmniVision Technologies (OVTI): FQ1 EPS of $0.21 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $258.1M (+18.3% Y/Y) beats by $15M. Shares +11.8% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]

- Monday, August 27, 2012, 12:29 PM OmniVision (OVTI +1%) is looking to buy an $80M stake in Chinese chip foundry Wuhan Xinxin, Digitimes reports. Wuhan Xinxin, a JV between SMI and the Wuhan municipal government, would give OmniVision another source for image sensor manufacturing capacity, in addition to Taiwanese partners TSMC (TSM) and Powerchip.
