OmniVision Technologies (OVTI -4%) is making new 52-week lows, after Wedbush (Neutral) slashes its PT ahead of Tuesday's FQ2 report. The firm thinks FQ2 results will be in-line with the numbers preannounced 2 weeks ago, but expect FQ3 guidance to be below Street estimates, given macro troubles, market share losses, and low chip manufacturing yields.

OmniVision (OVTI) -2.4% premarket after Needham downgrades shares to Hold from Strong Buy, saying while OVTI significantly lowered its FQ2 revenue outlook, the image sensor company also faces two long-term challenges: gross margin compression due to increasing pricing pressure; and accelerating competition in the 8MP non-Apple smartphone market.

Though shares were crushed yesterday by the news, Wedbush is downgrading OmniVision (OVTI) to Neutral on account of its FQ2 warning, as well as management's comments about having a "more cautionary outlook" for FQ3. The slower-than-expected ramp of OmniVision's 8MP BSI-2 chip, found in some iPhone 4S (AAPL) units, also has Wedbush concerned.

OmniVision (OVTI) shares -19.4% premarket after the company lowers FQ2 revenue guidance to $212M-$217M from $255M-$275M, reflecting an "unexpected cutback in orders for certain key projects." Fears have existed about the loss of iPhone (AAPL) image sensor share to Sony (SNE) with the arrival of the 4S. OVTI also authorizes a stock buyback of up to $100M.

OmniVision (OVTI +8.6%), which fell last Friday after a Chipworks analysis of the iPhone 4S turned up a SNE image sensor, is rebounding after Chipworks' study of iFixit's 4S detects an OmniVision sensor. The rally comes in spite of widespread belief that Apple (AAPL) would use two image sensor suppliers for the 4S.

OmniVision (OVTI +3.1%) recoups some of the big losses incurred on Friday after Chipworks confirmed the loss of iPhone (AAPL) image sensor share to SNE. Multiple analysts are reaffirming bullish ratings even as they lower their PTs (I, II, III), citing a low P/E and expectations of strong overall Apple-related shipments.

After rallying strongly on the day the iPhone 4S was announced, OmniVision (OVTI -7.3%) is down hard today on renewed fears of a loss of market share in the 4S to SNE. But ardent bull Paul Coster (I, II) is defending OmniVision again, claiming Apple's (AAPL) description of the 4S' image sensor suggests an OmniVision design win.

Down hard yesterday, OmniVision (OVTI +9.8%) is holding onto today's big gains as Apple (AAPL) announces the iPhone 4S will contain an 8-megapixel camera leveraging an image sensor using backside illumination technology; that's one of the key features of the OmniVision chip expected to go into many 4S units. Having defended OmniVision (OVTI) in early September following a post-earnings drop, J.P. Morgan is supporting the company again after last month's 24% drop. The firm still believes OmniVision's weak guidance doesn't reflect share loss, and thinks its latest chips will allow it to maintain a leading position in the image sensor market for another 12 months.

After talking with OmniVision's (OVTI) CFO, J.P. Morgan's Paul Coster thinks the company's post-earnings selloff, fueled by soft guidance and fears of lost business with Apple (AAPL), is overdone. Coster thinks OmniVision's short lead times bode well for meeting Q4 demand, and any issues related to producing a new image sensor chip will soon be resolved.
